Sharia Principles According to Muhammad Asad and Their Significance in Legal Rulings
The paper aims to throw lights on Muhammad Asad’s legal thought as expounded in his book This Law of Ours and Other Essays to identify the extent to which Zahiri dogmatic literalism had influenced his legal ideas and interpretation. It seeks to present its underlying philosophy and epistemology of sharī‘ah premises upon plain and direct ordinances of the two fundamental source of Sharī‘ah, the Qur’ān and sunnah (the life-example of the Prophet saw) that constituted the Law of Islam. The study is based on descriptive-qualitative approaches using historical, textual, thematic, semantic, hermeneutical and interpretative method to analyze the data. The finding shows that Muhammad Asad’s cohesive ideas of Islamic law was largely derived from Ibn Hazm’s (d. 456/1064) legal hermeneutic as projected in his voluminous work of Islamic jurisprudence, al-Muhallā. It was structured upon his classical text that inspired his conscious ideas of the spiritual and social aims of the law and its observance as moral habit, and to expound the ideological basis of the sharī‘ah, its nature, meaning and practical implication in the modern context
THE CLASH OF SUFI AND SALAFIST EDUCATION ON INDONESIAN FACEBOOK
This article examines the Facebook-based educational debate between Sufi scholar Ulil Abshar Abdalla and Salafi scholar Yazid bin Abdul Qadir Jawas. Our research addresses three main questions: What educational philosophies do Sufis use to defend against Salafi attacks? What educational approach does Salafis use to refute Sufi’s critiques? How does this theological conflict affect the daily religious practices of Indonesian Muslims? Using Facebook Analytics, this study analyzes recordings from the online Ngaji Ihya and Ngaji Rodja groups. The analysis comprises the coding of images and non-text data, a narrative analysis of social media content, and an examination of audience behaviour. Our research indicates Ulil Abshar Abdalla’s Sufism is a culturally-based approach to overcoming Islamic sectarian divisions within Indonesia. Yazid bin Abdul Qadir Jawas’s Salafist ideology, rooted in textual fiqh, is used to undermine Indonesia’s moderate Islamic voices. The conflict between the two groups stems from disagreements about faith, rituals, democracy, and customs. This theological conflict has resulted in both inclusive and exclusive religious practices. Facebook has become a battleground for competing Sufi and Salafi Islamic viewpoints. Sufism’s defensive position is characterized by its inclusivity and multiple perspectives, unlike salafism’s confrontational and singular view
ASSERTIVE ILLOCUTIONARY SPEECH ACTS OF THE NORMALIZATION OF SAUDI ARABIA-ISRAEL RELATIONS ON CNN ARABIC NEWS
This study examines how assertive illocutionary speech acts are employed in CNN Arabic media discourse to convey ideology and power dynamics in news coverage of the normalization of Saudi Arabia-Israel relations. This study employed descriptive-qualitative method with a critical pragmatics approach using Korta and Perry (2011) model which includes stances, critique, and reproduction. The data in the forms of texts were collected by documentation from six CNN Arabic news segments featuring statements by prominent figures, including Benjamin Netanyahu, Anthony Blinken, and Faisal bin Farhan. The data were analyzed by interpretation with the result that CNN Arabic tends to prioritize representing social actors from the Unites States and Israel as its main sources of information that from Saudi Arabia and Palestine. Through assertive speech acts, such stating, explaining, telling, and claiming, the media constructs discourses that favor the Western pro-normalization hegemonic ideology. This study reveals that these language strategies are not neutral but play a role in reproducing power and framing public opinion on sensitive geopolitical issues in the Middle East
LOOKIN’ GOOD: LUDIC LOCALIZATION QUALITY ASSESSMENT FOR VIDEO GAMES
Localization quality assessment (LQA) for video games tends to be discriminated in a sense that the assessment rubrics are not solely designed to address the issues of video game localization – the rubrics are generally employed for software or apps in common. Addressing this issue, I constructed an LQA that I called ludic LQA. Five steps were taken in constructing the LQA with participant-oriented research by Saldanha and O’Brien (2014) and participant observation by Spradley (2016) as the research frameworks. First, I investigated cases of LQA from a corpus of games to enlist common problems of localization that influence its quality. Second, employing the theories of schematic network by Tuggy (2006), Baconian perspectives of bias by Walton (1999), prosthetic communication in games by Purnomo et al. (2019), and diegetic and nondiegetic strategies in game localization by Purnomo and Purnama (2019), I constructed the parameters and their parametric weights. Third, I held a focus group discussion (FGD) with a game studio to reveal the applicability of the parameters. Fourth, I implemented the constructed LQA in video game localization (VGL) class to uncover practical issues with real localization problems as the objects of assessment. Fifth, practical issues found in the implementation were implemented in the final design of ludic LQA. Through these steps, ludic LQA was constructed. This LQA has linguistic meanings, cultural references, and spatial constraints. Since this LQA was solely designed for video games, game developers and localization specialists can employ the LQA to generate a thorough and comprehensive quality assessment
Challenging Gender Inequality through Qur’anic Reinterpretation: The Hermeneutics of Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid
Gender discrimination in contemporary Muslim societies is often rooted in literal interpretations of certain Qur’anic verses perceived as gender-biased, particularly those related to polygamy and inheritance. This study aims to analyze and evaluate Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid’s hermeneutical approach in addressing gender issues within Qur’anic interpretation. Employing a qualitative method, the research utilizes a critical-comparative hermeneutic textual analysis by examining Abu Zaid’s major works alongside selected classical and modern exegeses. The findings indicate that Abu Zaid’s hermeneutics successfully trace the historical and cultural roots of gender bias in traditional interpretations. His approach provides an alternative framework for reinterpretation that considers socio-historical contexts, allowing for a more equitable and dynamic understanding of Qur’anic messages. Abu Zaid differentiates between the divine text and its historically constructed interpretations, advocating for a reinterpretation that aligns with evolving social realities and the principles of justice and equality. This study affirms that religious texts are inherently dynamic and open to reinterpretation, especially when read through a contextual and gender-conscious lens. Abu Zaid’s hermeneutics contribute significantly to the development of a progressive methodology in Qur’anic exegesis, offering critical insights for addressing gender justice in modern Muslim contexts. Consequently, this research introduces a renewed perspective in the discourse of gender and Islamic hermeneutics that is both theologically grounded and socially responsiv
Navigating MSMEs success: A deep dive analysis of business success at Jogokaryan Mosque
This study aims to analyze the influence of mosque-based microenterprise financing and empowerment programs on the business success of mustahiq (zakat recipients) at Jogokariyan Mosque. Recognized as a pioneer in the productive zakat management system, Jogokariyan Mosque integrates its financial initiatives with socio-religious programs such as benevolent loans (qardhul hasan), business training sessions (Ngaji Bisnis), and the creation of a community marketplace (Pasar Rakyat Jogokariyan). The originality of this research lies in its development of Abu Zahrah’s maqashid sharia framework by incorporating a new dimension—worship quality—which has not been addressed in previous studies. The results reveal that financial wisdom and worship quality have a significant and positive effect on business success. Among these, worship quality demonstrates the strongest contribution, highlighting its importance as a spiritual dimension within the mosque empowerment model, followed by financial wisdom. This study concludes that the mosque-based empowerment model grounded in the maqashid sharia framework is effective in enhancing mustahiq business performance from both financial and spiritual perspectives. The findings reinforce the role of the mosque as a holistic and sustainable agent of socio-economic development and recommend the application of PLS-SEM as a robust approach for evaluating the success of productive zakat programs targeting microenterprises

The unseen pain: Lived experiences of intimate partner violence victims in South Africa
Intimate partner violence (IPV) constitutes a significant global public health problem. Studies of this phenomenon in South Africa are concentrated in urban and semi-urban areas, leaving rural areas unexplored. To bridge this knowledge gap, a qualitative study grounded in social constructivism and a single case study design was conducted to explore the lived experiences of victims of IPV receiving counseling services at the Bapong Crisis Centre, situated in a rural part of North West Province, South Africa. Data were generated from semi-structured interviews with 19 purposively selected IPV victims and deductively analyzed using reflective thematic analysis (RTA) through the lenses of Bonanno’s four-component model. The study found that most participants had negative experiences. The study also found that victims suffered negative emotional, psychological, physical, and social effects and used various coping mechanisms. These insights underscore the need for focused interventions, including mental health services, domestic violence prevention initiatives, and culturally sensitive programs designed to tackle power imbalances and emotional trauma within abusive intimate relationships
Mechanisms linking trait emotional intelligence to contextual performance of teacher leaders: A PLS-SEM approach
There is a lack of understanding of how trait emotional intelligence (EI) impacts contextual performance and the mediating processes involved, especially in challenging contexts. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to address the under-researched relationship between trait EI and contextual performance, specifically exploring the sequential mediating roles of political skill and self-efficacy among teacher leaders in the challenging context of Northeast Nigeria. This study linked personality traits to teacher leader performance, mediated by EI, political skill, and self-efficacy, within the framework self-determination theory. Self-report data were collected from 292 teacher leaders (x̅ age = 45.08 6.87; x̅tenure = 15.50 7.21) in Nigerian polytechnics and analyzed using PLS-SEM in SmartPLS. The results showed a significant direct effect of trait EI on contextual performance, and a partial mediation of perceived self-efficacy in the relationship. Interestingly, while political skill correlates positively with both trait EI and contextual performance, it did not exhibit a significant mediating effect. However, the analysis revealed a significant overall sequential mediation effect involving both political skill and perceived self-efficacy, explaining 60.4% of the variance in contextual performance. Thus, the researchers recommend incorporating political skill and perceived self-efficacy in staff selection and assessment processes
Evaluating the Validity of Gold Futures Trading in Light of DSN-MUI Fatwa No. 77/2010
This study aims to evaluate the practice of gold futures trading at PT. Agung Cindo Berjangka and assess its compliance with the Fatwa of the National Sharia Council of the Indonesian Ulema Council (DSN-MUI) No. 77/DSN-MUI/V/2010 regarding non-cash gold transactions. The problem identified in this research is the misalignment between trading practices and Islamic legal provisions, which raises concerns about the validity of such transactions from a Sharia perspective. Utilizing a qualitative field research method and a case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that the trading practices involve contract-based transactions that do not entail physical gold delivery, thereby contradicting several key provisions in the DSN-MUI Fatwa No. 77. Specifically, the study highlights violations of the clause prohibiting price increases during the contract period and the presence of gharar (uncertainty), maysir (speculation), and riba (usury). These elements render the practice non-compliant with Sharia principles and Islamic economic ethics
