    Volumetric properties and influence of water content on compactability of recycled mixtures

    Volumetric characteristics significantly influence the mechanical performance and the durability of bituminous mixtures. Indeed, they are important parameters to be considered in both mix design and quality control phases. Nowadays, among compaction methods, the gyratory compactor (GC) is worldwide used for bituminous mixtures. Even if there is not a universally accepted compaction procedure for cold recycling, numerous universities and road administration agencies have employed the GC especially for bituminous emulsion treated materials. However, the presence of recycled aggregate, cement, bituminous emulsion and water requires adapting the traditional volumetric parameters to these recycled materials. This paper describes the volumetric characteristics of cold recycled mixtures based on the traditional principles used for hot bituminous mixtures. In particular, the compactability and the influence of water content on a mixture containing 50 % of reclaimed asphalt stabilized with 3 % of emulsion and 2 % of cement were investigated. Moreover, closed and slotted moulds were used to study in depth the saturation process. Results showed that specimens compacted in a closed mould, at high water contents, have a bi-linear evolution of the voids content, which defines two compaction phases. In addition, laboratory compaction using a closed mould seems to simulate better the full-scale compaction procedure. Finally, the water content that allowed the saturation state to be reached at the end of the compaction process corresponded to the optimum water content of the mixture

    Moving Least Squares Differential Quadrature Based on Radial Basis Functions for the Vibration Analysis of Beams, Plates and Shells

    The numerical stability and accuracy of strong form collocation approaches, such as the Differential Quadrature (DQ) method, depend on the choice of the basis functions and point collocations. DQ methods allow to approximate a partial or total derivative as a weighted linear sum of the unknown functional values. The calculation of these weighting coefficients is not trivial, because they can be not accurate when some selections are made. In fact, classic DQ method demonstrated ill-conditioned matrices when a large number of points was considered. Among all the different families of DQ methods, in the present work a Moving Least Squares DQ (MLSDQ) method based on Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) is carried out. In particular, RBFs are used as basis functions for the weighting coefficient calculation. Generally, DQ method needs structured grids to perform well. On the contrary MLSDQ method can achieve good results also using a random point collocation. All the unknown functional values are expressed through a MLS approximation. The proposed method is applied to one- and two-dimensional systems. In particular the accuracy, stability and reliability of this technique is presented for beams, plates and shells with variable radii of curvature. The effect of composite materials with anisotropic behavior will be underlines throughout several numerical applications compared to the open literature. Furthermore, the present implementation will be included into a strong form finite element framework for the investigation of structures when discontinuities and cracks are presented

    Benchmarking of RFID EPC and NFC tags for apparel Applications

    The objective of the paper is twofold: on the one hand, to propose a designed testing protocol to measure and compare performances of specific NFC and EPC tags. The protocol matches some common operational conditions in supply chain processes and is particularly tailored to the apparel industry, which represents one of the most important target for these innovative devices. On the other one, the paper strives at benchmarking performances of dual frequency inlays, bringing innovative features to the NFC and EPC worlds, when deployed in the apparel logistics and end-user retail processes. The developed testing protocol makes it possible to assess performances of RFID devices in simulated supply chains and end-user-oriented processes. It has been designed according to the needs for identification both for the supply chain and the end users, who can take advantage of the adoption of NFC technology. We applied the testing procedure to three RFID inlays equipped with an innovative IC and two antennas, capable of managing both EPC communication in UHF band and NFC communication in HF band with smart devices. The performances of the inlays have been compared to standard tags commonly used in EPC and NFC fields. We measured and compared read rates, accuracies, and read times when testing EPC capabilities, and read times and distances when measuring NFC functionalities. By simulating a real-world environment, test results give a direct insight of performances to be expected from different dual frequency RFID inlays. Therefore, IT and logistics managers can find answers to how these innovative tags perform and which would be the best choice for new scenarios involving company's RFID applications, such as logistics, inventory checking or store security. At the same time, researchers focused on the business value of RFID applications can validate innovative RFIDreengineered business processes

    Neuropsychological profile in new-onset benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS): Focusing on executive functions

    Purpose: Increased evidence of subnormal neuropsychological functioning in new-onset childhood epilepsy has been obtained, although results are still rare and controversial. With a prospective study, we aimed to define the very early neuropsychological profile of children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS), including executive functions (EF) because of their key role in learning. Additionally, we enrolled drug-naive children, with a NREM sleep frequency of discharges <85% and with a Performance Intelligence Quotient equal or superior to 85, in order to exclude additional effects on the neuropsychological functioning.Methods: Fifteen school-aged children with BECTS (mean age: 8.8 years, standard deviation [SD]: 2.4 years) and fifteen healthy children (mean age: 9.2 years, [SD]: 2.5 years) were enrolled and assessed with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. The assessment included domain-specific standardized tests of language, EF, academic skills, visuomotor and visuospatial skills, and short-term memory. A p-value <0.05 was considered significant.Results: Significant differences between patients and controls emerged with respect to 3 domains. Language was affected in color naming (p =.026), spoonerism (p =.003), and phonemic synthesis (p =.009). Executive functions appeared inadequate in the five point test with respect to the number of correct figures (p =. 003) and errors (p =.008). In the domain of academic skills, significant differences between groups emerged regarding the number of mistakes in nonword writing (p =.001), nonword reading speed (p =.027), nonword reading number of mistakes (p =. 019), and word reading errors (p =. 023).Discussion: Results showed that children with new-onset BECTS may demonstrate a range of neuropsychological dysfunctions, particularly affecting executive attention, despite a normal IQ, a low frequency of NREM sleep discharges, and the absence of drugs. These difficulties indicate a frontal dysfunction with cascading effects on language and academic skills. The inclusion of EF in the assessment battery and in the intervention since the very onset is warranted in order to avoid further and persistent academic difficulties. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc.     Life cycle assessment of a new feed production obtained by wasted flour food collected from the distribution and retail phases

    This study assesses the suitability of flour food products wasted during the distribution phase to be used as raw material for the production of animal feed. Landfill is nowadays the most adopted end of life option for flour food products. Nonetheless, by setting up a specific sorting system, it would be possible to separate the wasted food from its packaging and to recover both of them. In this latter case, food waste could be better valorised, by diverting it to alternative channels, such as anaerobic digestion or animal feeding. In this study, the environmental performance of two valorisation scenarios for floor food waste intended to be used to produce animal feed were analysed using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology. The new scenarios are compared with one another and with the traditional feed production. Results of the study show that the new scenarios lead to environmental benefits for all the considered impact categories
