    A visual planning solution to streamline the processes of hybrid cross-dockings

    Cross-docking is a logistic strategy widely adopted both in manufacturing and distribution contexts. Despite the huge number of researches on this topic, most of them remain rather theoretical as they do not pay enough attention to operational aspects and daily functioning patterns of cross-dockings. This article aims at introducing a new focus for cross-docking research by proposing a visual planning solution to manage daily operation of a manufacturing cross-docking. By avoiding complex optimization algorithms and by adopting concepts belonging to the lean management theory, the article shows the potential of visual planning techniques to improve performance of cross-dockings. Starting from a specific industrial context, the shipping warehouse of an Italian company of the oil andand gas sector, a visual management methodology has been proposed to support the operation of cross-dockings. Although developed in a particular context, the proposed methodology and its underlying principles are to be considered general and potentially applicable to a wide range of cross-dockings. The methodology fully exploits an analytical tool, namely, the Safety Margin coefficientthat could be used for capacity planning purposes and to evaluate quantitatively the system performance at a given time instant

    VIRTUAL LABS IN EDUCATION

    Previous studies revealed that students who engage in properly-designed laboratory experiences develop important skills and competencies. Laboratory activities provide an interactive learning strategy, inspire students to further their education and foster practical skills. Moreover, science professors consider laboratories as a way of proving beliefs. Therefore, it was stressed that laboratory experiences are at the heart of the learning processes across all domains of science. The rapid development of information technologies and their availability at low costs have changed the educational laboratory landscape. Among the others, virtual labs grow in numbers during the last years. They allowed a reduction of the costs of hands-on labs by taking advantage of the internet. This because all the infrastructure required for virtual laboratories is not real; rather, it is simulated on computers. They also have additional advantages (e.g., safety and availability). Our review aims at investigating the educational effectiveness of virtual labs, trying to understand how they can improve the educational experience. We believe it is of importance to deepen the understanding of virtual labs when compared to physical (hands-on) labs in terms of learning outcomes. This because it should be of interest to discuss different viewpoints about educational objectives and effectiveness of hands-on and virtual laboratories

    Randomized Double-Blind Controlled Study on the Safety and Efficacy of a Novel Injectable Cross-linked Hyaluronic Gel for the Correction of Moderate-to-Severe Nasolabial Wrinkles

    Introduction: The current study compares two hyaluronic acid fillers, Ial System Duo and Belotero Basic/Balance, for the treatment of wrinkles. Materials and Methods: This is a single-center, double-blind randomized controlled study. Inclusion criteria consisted of subjects with bilateral nasolabial wrinkles. Each subject was treated with both products: One was applied on the right side and the other on the left side of the face. The quantity of product injected and any problems or local reactions (erythema, edema, pain or itching) were recorded and reassessed at 3 and 6 months and then monthly until complete absorption of the product. The Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS) and the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) were used for the assessment, as well as an ultrasound measurement of the skin thickness. Results: Complete data were available for 59 subjects. At 3 and 6 months, both products showed improvement in the WSRS and GAIS score in the areas treated compared to pre-treatment assessments, although no significant differences were observed between them. No resulting significant differences were observed on skin thickness among the two products, which were completely reabsorbed in 285 ± 34 days (Ial System Duo) and 277 ± 34 days (Belotero Basic/Balance; Student’s t test: p = 0.2181). No significant differences were observed with regard to the subject’s satisfaction and adverse events. Conclusions: The Ial System Duo achieves long-term permanence (more than 9 months confirmed by ultrasound) in correction of moderate and severe wrinkles, similar to Belotero Basic/Balance. Both products showed a high safety profile and a high degree of subject and physician satisfaction.     Comparison between antimicrobial-coated sutures and uncoated sutures for the prevention of surgical site infections in plastic surgery. A double blind control trial

    Abstract OBJECTIVE: Surgical site infection (SSI) produces considerable morbidity and increases health care costs. One of its causes is microbial adherence to the surgical sutures surface. A strategy to avoid microbial colonization is the use of antimicrobial-impregnated sutures. Recently absorbable sutures treated with chlorhexidine (CHX) have been developed. Our study purpose was to compare CHX-coated and uncoated suture in elective plastic surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, single-centre controlled trial of 18 patients undergoing elective bilateral mammary surgery and 18 patients undergoing skin lesions removals. Patients were divided into 2 groups receiving antibacterial-coated (study group) and uncoated (controlled group) sutures for wound closure. Patients were evaluated for scar results and signs of SSIs were monitored over a period of 30 days (or 1 year in case of prosthetic surgery). Statistical comparison was performed using dependent t-tests for paired samples. RESULTS: For patients undergoing mammary surgery, based on Vancouver Scale, there were no significant differences between the two groups. We noticed that in 8 patients the vertical scars belonging to the control group were larger than the contralateral 8 vertical sutures belonging to the study group. For patients undergoing skin surgery, surgical wounds treated with uncoated sutures were significantly more erythematous than the ones belonging to the study group (Media: 0,8333% vs. 1,5556%, respectively; standard deviation: 9,235 vs. 0,6157; 95%; p=0.0092). CONCLUSIONS: No wounds infection was reported between the two groups. Based on our experience, we conclude that the use of CHX-coated sutures should be considered in case of inflamed lesions removal. Further studies are needed to validate our results
