Neither Voiceless Nor Unbelievable: Women Detectives and Rape Culture in Contemporary Italian TV
In 2020, Rai Fiction (the production branch of Italian public broadcaster Rai, the most relevant player in terms of investments in televisual production) and the production company Cattleya co-produced Voiceless (original title Bella da morire, Deadly Beautiful), a miniseries of 8 episodes centred on Eva Cantini, a police detective specialised in sex-based hate crimes, which in Italian are referred to as femminicidi (femicide): the killing of a woman, in particular by a man, on account of her gender. Eva Cantini is part of a growing numbers of televisual female detectives in recent American and European productions who disrupt assumptions related not only to the manliness of the detective profession, but also to the discursive meanings regarding gender relations, representation of gender violence, and the female gaze
A probabilistic investigation on the dynamic behaviour of pile foundations in homogeneous soils
Soil-structure interaction is a complex problem to address in structural design due to difficulties related to the modelling of the soil-foundation behaviour, which is frequency-dependent and affected by uncertainties. The substructure method is an efficient approach to include the soil-foundation behaviour in the superstructure response, since it allows addressing separately the soil-foundation and the superstructure analysis exploiting different tools and expertise. A deterministic approach is usually adopted for the soil-foundation system analysis selecting properties of foundation and soil based on an engineering judgment, despite uncertainties due to the intrinsic variability of soil parameters are largely recognised by both scholars and practitioners, as well as confirmed by experimental campaigns and laboratory tests. This paper presents a probabilistic perspective of the dynamic behaviour of pile foundations in homogeneous soils, focusing on the effects of the uncertainties in: (i) the frequency-dependent impedance functions; and (ii) the kinematic response factors necessary to derive the foundation input motion from the free-field motion. Single piles and square pile groups are considered. Uncertainties are described through the probabilistic distributions of parameters governing the soil-foundation dynamic response, while the samples are generated using the quasi-random sampling technique. Probabilistic analyses are performed utilizing an efficient numerical model that has been developed, and the variability of the output quantities is presented and discussed. The latter reveals to be strongly affected by frequency. In addition, sensitivity analyses are performed to investigate the influence of each variable uncertainty on the system response. The response quantities are highly sensitive to the shear wave velocity while the soil density and the pile elastic modulus may have a significant role, depending on the foundation layout
Experiencing the Role of Cooperation and Competition in Operations and Supply Chain Management with a Multiplayer Serious Game
We present an innovative, cooperative, and competitive multiplayer serious game, suited for the educational needs of supply chain and operation management post-graduate students. Hence, the objective is to satisfy the ever-increasing requirement of students to have the ability to experience and practice the theory learned in traditional ways, for active knowledge acquisition. To cope with such needs, we designed and implemented a multiplayer online serious game, that provides players with a realistic industrial experience, and teaches them how to take a whole range of day-to day and medium-term challenging decisions. Learners are divided into teams, each one representing an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), in every team the students will collaborate and will compete in the same market, and sharing a limited set of suppliers. To this aim they have to define a strategy to target the best market segmentation. Teachers have the possibility to investigate the decision patters of the learners, analyze KPIs and learning analytics, to better understand the learning process and guide the learners in their educational journey. By means of a preliminary questionnaire, the interest in using the serious game to study operation management was confirmed. In addition, the game was tested by a small group of students, who acknowledged the effectiveness of the game's dynamics as a tool to complement traditional teaching methods
