    An observational mechanism for detection of distributed denial-of-service attacks

    This study proposes a continuous mechanism for detecting distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks from network traffic data. The mechanism aims to systematically organise traffic data and prepare them for DDoS attack detection using convolutional deep-learning neural networks. The proposed mechanism contains ten phases covering activities, including data preprocessing, feature selection, data labelling, model building, model evaluation, DDoS detection, attack pattern identification, alert creation, notification delivery, and periodical data sampling. The evaluation results suggested that the detection model built based on convolutional deep-learning neural networks and relevant network traffic features provided 97.2% detection accuracy. The study designed a holistic mechanism that considers the systematic network traffic data management for continuous monitoring and good performance of DDoS attack detection. The proposed mechanism could provide a solution for network traffic data management and enhance the existing methods for DDoS attack detection. In addition, it generally contributes to the cybersecurity body of knowledge

    Modeling and bifurcation analysis of an intraguild predation system

    This paper proposes a mathematical model of an asymmetric intraguild (IG) predation system with an exclusive alternative resource. In particular, this paper analyzes the effects that the exclusive alternative resource has on the consumption/predation behaviors of both the IG predator and IG prey species in the system. The results presented on this paper show that, if the IG predator is less competitive in consumption and less efficient in conversion of the shared resource than that of the IG prey, then there exists a lower bound on the value of the predation rate parameter that should be maintained by IG predator species to ensure its survival and co-existence in the system

    Fractal analysis to determine JRC on sandstones and its correlation to SRF, Ende-Lianunu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia

    The study area is located in Ende-Lianunu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, with mountainous and hilly morphology, and is part of the Kiro Formation which is composed of tuffaceous sandstones. Discontinuities in the sandstone are in the form of bedding planes and joints, which affect the mechanical properties of the rock mass, reduce its strength, and affect slope stability. The discontinuity condition that affects mechanical behavior is surface roughness. This research aims to define the fractal dimension value of surface roughness using a box-counting method, joint roughness coefficient (JRC), and simulate the strength reduction factor (SRF) value on slopes that have a certain JRC. The fractal dimension of fine-grained samples = 1.0010 and coarse-grained = 1.0056. The average JRC value is 6.25 (Range 4-6). Simulation at JRC 0-20, gives different SRF values. On slopes with JRC = 0, the critical SRF = 1.35. If JRC = 20, the critical SRF = 1.47. It can be inferred, that the fractal dimension of the roughness of the sliding plane correlates with JRC and SRF. As the fractal dimension value increases, so do the JRC and SRF values, resulting in more stable slope conditions

    Ratio of supplement for Saccharum edule Hassk waste ensilage

    Saccharum edule Hassk (Terubuk) is a plant of the Poaceae family that after consuming its flowers as vegetables, Saccharum edule Hassk waste in the form of leaves and stems can be used as alternative animal feed. Improving the nutrition of crushed waste as an alternative feed can be done through ensilage using several mixed ingredients that can maximize the fermentation process. The study aimed to analyze the effect of differences in the ratio of starter microbial with a mixture of silage, such as molasses and rice bran, on the quality of the Saccharum edule Hassk waste silage. The research was conducted using leaf and stem material using the anaerobic fermentation method. The ratio of microbes, molasses, and rice bran used was 0.00067%:2%:4% (S1), 0.0008%:3%:6% (S2), and 0.001%:4%:8% (S3). The fermentation time was 14, 21, and 28 days. The results obtained showed that pH <4 was achieved by S1, S2, and S3, at 21 and 28 days of fermentation. Fleigh value (NF) of S1 and S2 at 21 days of fermentation was 72.47% while in S3 it was 72.20%. The NF at 28 days of fermentation was 85.53% in S1, and 85. 67% in S2 and S3. The highest protein content is in S2 at 10.37 ± 0.69% (p>0.05) in a fermentation time of 21 days

    Evaluation of technology of artisanal and improved production of Vitellaria paradoxa butter in Burkina Faso

    This study aims to find the current various processes for the almond producers and the extractors of shea butter in Burkina Faso. The survey was conducted in seven provinces. Three approaches to data gathering were used: group interviews in which forms were filled out during interviews; individual interviews in which the interviewer asked one person about the survey-related tasks; and semi-structured group interviews. The survey data were analyzed and the results obtained made it possible to draw up four technological diagrams of almond products and three of almond processing into butter. The surveys showed that shea kernels were produced by boiling, pit fermented, and then smoked, or only smoked. In terms of butter making, the classic churning and roasting processes were used. These results revealed that the processes of butter making and processing are not uniform in all the units of producers. However, further studies are recommended, especially to determine the physico-chemical, sensory, and microbiological parameters of the butter from the productions to better appreciate their qualities

    Mechanical gear footstep power generation using a mini generator with buck and boost selectors

    In this research, we intend to build a floor-based power plant that produces energy using a mechanical generator drive. The drive system uses a two-gear transmission system with a different number of teeth, resulting in varying torque and speed. The large gear will stick directly to the floor, causing it to spin when the floor is stepped on, and then the small gear will spin the generator quickly. The buck and boost selector systems are powered by fluctuating voltage from the generator. If the voltage produced by the generator is greater than 5 V, the system will reduce it; otherwise, the system will increase the voltage. This selector system uses several modifications of the current circuit between rectifiers, which function to rectify the generator output when the generator rotation changes, a voltage divider is useful for dividing the generator output voltage. The pressure before and after the selector system was measured by applying force on the floor to 15 people with varying loads. The result shows that the buck and boost selector system can work properly, and the nominal output voltage of the generator is around 5 V as needed

    Preventive remediation methods minimize soil pollution

    Soil quality is rich in various substances, as well as a rich variety of uses for life, which leads to the potential for pollution. Once soils are polluted, remediation is mitigative and must be carried out, which has been the focus of many studies so far. However, preventive remediation is the focus of the novelty of this study, which aims to prepare predictive methods. This is a literature review of various studies over the last ten years, which are related to soil quality indicators through the respiration process. Based on the soil microbial respiration process platform, which contains various substances, the results of this study found three preventive remediation methods, namely indicators of substance reactants, gas products, and toxicity to microbes. The three methods simply require measuring the parameters of biochemical oxygen demand, and chemical oxygen demand, in addition to specific measurements of carbon dioxide and microbial enumeration. The advantage of the preventive remediation method is the application of soil response indicators to various types and amounts of contaminants. The implementation of preventive remediation is prior to building infrastructure, which is able to predict changes in soil quality through monitoring, thereby minimizing the potential for mitigative remediation

    A new transmissometer method that measures runway visibility across a short distance

    The present technique developed a transmissometer idea for intensity measurements in the ecosystem across an 80 cm distance. The method relies on the transmission of an optical or infrared (diode laser 785 nm) signal obtained on spectrum analyses (ocean optics HG4000) received signal from the laser under unique conditions (light dust, heavy dust, and waterdrops) at a short distance. Thus, this approach is useful to measure the intensities of the laser beam and locate the visibility measurements of laser transmissometers in the rain and special care to the dust. The results showed that heavy dust enhanced the visibility measurements for distinct intensity distributions between showers and dust. Since light and heavy dust within a single transmittance can easily cover the entire runway visual range (RVR) range for a brief period, visibility measurements were crucial. The full-scale value corresponds to infinite visibility for heavy dust (0.8611) and minimum visibility for drop rain conditions (0.01073)

    Andisol and microcrystalline cellulose from Typha angustifolia for auramine O adsorption

    Andisol has a large surface area, is mesoporous, and contains the active groups' silanol (Si-OH) and aluminol (Al-OH). Besides andisol, cellulose is a good adsorbent, because microcrystalline cellulose has an active hydroxyl group (OH). The number of active adsorbent groups can be enhanced by chemically modifying the surface area (increment), or adding other materials. These modifications included alkaline modified-andisol with the addition of NaOH to increase pore size, cellulose hydrolysis with HCl to increase surface area, and andisol modification with the inclusion of other materials, mainly cellulose, to increase surface area. After the adsorption process is complete, the adsorption capacity of andisol-microcrystalline cellulose (AMS) to auramine O (AO) is known. As an adsorbent for AO, the surface area of BET andisol is 25.92 m2/g and the pore diameter is 14.40 nm, while the surface area of microcrystalline cellulose and AMS adsorbent are 26.60 m2/g and 18.60 m2/g, respectively. The maximum AO adsorption conditions by AMS were at pH 7, optimum at a contact time of 5 minutes, and maximum at a concentration of 40 mg/L with an adsorbent ratio of 1:1. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm more closely followed the pseudo second-order and Langmuir isotherm with an adsorption capacity of 5.24 mg/g

    Mechanical and thermal properties of recycled polypropylene bamboo fibre-reinforced composites

    In this article, a kind of green composite was prepared from recycled polypropylene (r-PP) which was further reinforced with various loadings of chemically modified bamboo fibres. Effects of bamboo fibre loading on the mechanical and thermal properties of r-PP/bamboo composites were studied. Those properties were characterized by tensile testing, impact testing, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Standardized test specimens with 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% mass fractions of bamboo fibre were obtained by an extrusion process which was then finalized on injection molding. The experiment revealed the tensile strength and strain of the composite become greater with the increase of bamboo fraction in the ultimate value of 20% mass fraction. The composite with 10% bamboo fibre loading recorded the highest value of impact strength. Meanwhile, it was evident that the presence of bamboo fibre decreased the thermal stability of recycled polypropylene materials. Therefore, this composite material may find good potential for semi-structural loading applications in relatively low-exposure working
