Asymptotic Stabilization of Delayed Systems with Input and Output Saturations
We consider in this paper the problem of controlling an arbitrary linear delayed system with saturating input and output. We study the stability of such a system in closed-loop with a given saturating regulator. Using inputoutput stability tools, we formulated sufficient conditions ensuring global asymptotic stability
Photovoltaic Array Modeling under Uniform Irradiation and Partial Shading Condition
Wind energy and solar energy are the prime energy sources which are being utilized for renewal energy. The performance of a photovoltaic (PV) array for solar energy is affected by temperature, irradiation, shading, and array configuration. Often, the PV arrays are shadowed, completely or partially, by the passing clouds, neighboring buildings and towers, trees, and utility and telephone poles. Under partially shaded conditions, the PV characteristics are more complex with multiple peaks, hence, it is very important to understand and predict the MPP under PSC in order to extract the maximum possible power. This paper presents the development of PV array simulator for studying the I–V and P–V characteristics of a PV array under a partial shading condition. It can also be used for developing and evaluating new maximum power point tracking techniques, for PV array with partially shaded conditions. It is observed that, for a given number of PV modules, the array configuration significantly affects the maximum available power under partially shaded conditions. This is another aspect to which the developed tool can be applied. The model has been experimentally validated and the usefulness of this research is highlighted with the help of several illustrations
Unified Power Quality Conditioner Using Injection Capacitors for Voltage Sag Compensation
Power quality has become an important factor in power systems, for consumer and household appliances. The main causes of poor power quality are har ue of achieving active current distortion compensation, power factor monic currents, poor power factor, supply voltage variations etc. A techniq correction and also mitigating the supply voltage variations at load side is compensated by unique device UPQC presented in this thesis. This concept presents a multi loop based controller to compensate power quality problems through a three phase four wire Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) under unbalanced and distorted load conditions. Here the UPQC is constituted of two Voltage Source Converters (VSC) connected via power link. The series compensator is connected to the line in series and injects the voltage and thus compensates for voltage issues; whereas the shunt compensator injects current thus compensating for current issues, and is connected in shunt to the line. The voltage injection to the line uses an ijecting transformer. The injection transformer is later replaced with injection capacitors, thus eliminating the drawback of conventional UPQC. In this way a good power quality is maintaine
Stator Inter-turn Fault Detection in Inverter Fed Induction Motor Drives
The Squirrel Cage Induction Motor (SCIM) with advanced power electronic inverters presents the greater advantages on cost and energy efficiency as compared with other industrial solutions for varying speed applications. In recent, the inverter fed induction motors are being popular in the industries. These inverter fed-motors are recently gathering great recognition for multimegawatt industrial drive applications. In this present paper, a dynamic simulation model of PWM inverter fed SCIM with direct torque control jointly has been presented and analyzed in the recent MATLAB/Simulink environment. From the proposed simulation model, the transient behavior of SCIM has been analysed for healthy as well as for stator inter-turn fault condition. The dynamic simulation of induction motor is one of the key steps in the validation of design process of the electric motor and drive system. It is extremely needed for eliminating probable faults beforehand due to inadvertent design mistakes and changes during operation. The simulated model gives encouraging results with reduced harmonics [1]. By using the model, the successful detection of stator inter-turn fault of the SCIM is carried out in the transient condition. Therefore, early stator fault detection is possible and may avoid the motor to reach in the catastrophic conditions. Therefore, may save millions of dollars for industries

Impact of Shunt FACTS Devices on Security Constrained Unit Commitment
Shunt FACTS Devices (SFD) would play an important role in maintaining security and reduce total generation cost in the economical operation of power systems. The application of this device to the AC model of securityconstrained unit commitment (SCUC) for the day ahead scheduling is presented in this paper. The proposed AC model of SCUC with SFD would include active and reactive power flow constraints which increase the network controllability at normal operation and contingency. A general SFD model is introduced for the reactive power management in SCUC which is based on the reactive power injection model (RPIM). The case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the SFD application to SCUC with AC network constraints. Meanwhile simulation results demonstrate the combined use of these devices to SCUC have a significant impact on maintaining network security, preventing load shedding, lower total generation cost and increase using the maximum capacity of the existing transmission network
Transient Stability Improvement Using UPFC-SMES in A Multi Machine Power System
Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is a Voltage sourced converter based Flexible A.C.Transmission (FACTS) controller which has a capability of simultaneously or selectively controlling all the parameters affecting transmission of power. With emphasis on harnessing renewable energy many energy storage technologies are being used. Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) stores energy in magnetic form by means of a D.C. current circulating in a superconducting coil. To exchange power with SMES a power electronic interface is required. Feasibility of interfacing SMES to D.C. link of UPFC has been explored in this paper. A multimachine system with a long transmission line is compensated by UPFC-SMES .A DC-DC chopper modulates power of SMES so as to improve the transient stability of system. Complete simulation has been done using MATLAB/Simulink which shows improvement of first peak, damping of oscillations & improvement in critical clearing time
A Multi-objective Hybrid Heuristic Approach for Optimal Setting of FACTS Devices in Power System Operation
Improvement of power system performance in terms of increased voltage profile and decreased transmission loss is becoming one of the challenging tasks to the system operators under open access environment. Apart from traditional power flow controlling devices, use of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices can give an attractive solution for the operation and control of deregulated power system. The type, size, location and number of FACTS devices are to be optimized appropriately in order to get the targeted benefits. In this paper, two FACTS devices, Thyristor Controller Phase Shift Transformer (TCPST) and Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) are selected to obtain the required performance such as improvement of voltage profile and loss minimization. To search the optimal location and optimal rating of the selected FACTS devices, a hybrid algorithm which formulated with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is proposed. At the first step, the optimization problem is solved for finding the optimal location of FACTS devices using PSO with an objective of voltage profile maximization and later GSA is implemented to optimize their parameters with an objective of transmission loss minimization. The proposed method is implemented on IEEE 30-bus test system and from the simulation results it can be proved that this technique is well suited for real-time application.
