A 24-sectors direct power control-feedforward neural network method of DFIG integrated to dual-rotor wind turbine

    Get PDF
In this work, a 24-sector direct power control (24-sector DPC) of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based dual-rotor wind turbine (DRWT) is studied. The major disadvantage of the 24-DPC control is the steady-state ripples in reactive and active powers. The use of 24 sectors of rotor flux, a feedforward neural network (FNN) algorithm is proposed to improve traditional 24-sector DPC performance and minimize significantly harmonic distortion (THD) of stator current and reactive/active power ripple. The proposed method is modeled and simulated by using MATLAB/Simulink software under different tests and compared with conventional 24-sector DPC

Control of isolated microgrid based renewable energy generation using PID controller

    Get PDF
This paper investigates optimal PID controller tuning using particle swarm optimization for frequency control in the microgrid system. The proposed microgrid composed of renewable sources such as wind turbine generation and solar system with diesel engine generator and storage systems such as the battery, flywheel, aqua electrolyze, and fuel cell. The microgrid based on renewable energy sources faces different challenges in operation and stability due to the stochastic nature of solar radiation and wind speed that depend upon the weather conditions. Among these challenges, the frequency and power deviations are affected by the sudden unbalance between generation and load which require a suitable and adequate regulation. The principal objective of this study is to reduce the frequency and power deviation by the use of the PID controller optimized based particle swarm optimization due to its simplicity and flexibility to overcome this kind of issues. The simulation results show the better performances and robustness of the proposed controller against the disturbances in load and generations in comparison to using a genetic algorithm

Squirrel cage induction motor predictive direct torque control based on multi-step delay compensation

    Get PDF
The squirrel cage induction motor direct torque control main problems due to torque and large stator flux pulsation. In this an improved model predictive direct torque control algorithm considering multi-step delay compensation is proposed. At each sampling moment, predict the stator flux linkage and torque at the next moment under each voltage vector. The optimal voltage vector deviation from the stator flux linkage reference value and torque reference value are selected as the minimum objective function. Aiming at the problem of one-shot delay in digital control systems, a multi-step predictive delay compensation measure is studied. Simulation shows that the algorithm can effectively reduce torque and stator flux pulsation, reduce current harmonic distortion, and solve the delay problem in digital systems

Microgrids dynamic stability interconnected through low voltage AC network

    Get PDF
Renewable energy based microgrids have main challenges of maintaining its frequency-voltage characteristics and system becomes more complex when they are interconnected. These sources being intermittent in nature need to be supported by other resources like diesel/biogas such that at time of small variation in load or natural sources (wind/solar), power requirement is met through support provided by diesel/biogas-based system. Also, the controller should be fast enough to minimize the changes such that system reaches steady state. In this paper, renewable based rural microgrid consisting of wind, solar and biogas is modeled and interconnected through low voltage AC (LVAC) line. Also, one of the microgrid modeled is connected to the main grid as well as drawing power from the other microgrid. Control approach have been developed in such a way that whenever there is disturbance in the system due to increase/decrease in load or input to the renewable energy sources the biogas-based system of individual microgrid increases/decreases its generation to support the system requirement. No extra power is drawn either from the LVAC network or main grid as desired. modeling of system and its dynamic Study has been carried out in MATLAB/Simulink

Statistical t-test assessment on performance of power system stabilizer for oscillation damping

    Get PDF
The statistical operation is necessary to validate the analytical procedure since the most important common operation is the comparison of result data to quantify accuracy and precision. In this paper, a statistical process is proposed to ensure the impact of power system stabilizers (PSSs) in 202-bus, 40-machine MEPE test system. The eigenvalue analysis is utilized for detecting the lowest damping modes and evaluating the damping ratio of system oscillation, and these modes are applied as input for statistical analysis. A t-test analysis was performed on the difference of damping performance by proposed designed PSS, tuned PSS, and without PSS to support the hypothesis. The t-test results validated that the MEPE test system with designed PSS is most applicable for the improvement of oscillation damping in the power system

Techno-economic study of a hybrid power generation system at the Lebanese coastal highways

    Get PDF
Despite its great importance in daily life, electricity remains one of the most critical issues in Lebanon where the power supply has been erratic for years and the government faces numerous problems in buying foreign currency for fuel import from petroleum countries. Therefore, there is an urgent need for efficient solutions to produce local energy in a more sustainable way, leading to an environmentally friendly energy consumption, far away from conventional energy sources. In this work, unconventional technologies are used for the generation of clean energy from a system of photovoltaic (PV) panels and wind turbines. The novelty lies in the fact that the cost of the land required for the installation is almost zero. The middle of the highways is usually left unoccupied and therefore suitable for the project. Another innovative feature of the proposed system is its ability to be connected to the public utility without the need for battery storage, which reduces the total cost of the system. The proposed design consists of 87,750 PVs arranged in pairs on a steel frame for a coastal distance of 117,000 meters (highway distance between Tyre and Tripoli) with a width of 2 meters and 29,250 vertical wind turbines placed under the chassis. Using RETScreen software, the capacity of the resulting system is estimated at 39.9 GW/year. The system would lead to a reduction in CO2 and GHG emissions of approximately 28,211 tCO2/year. The payback period of this project is estimated at 9 years with a lifetime of 25 years

A new method to incorporate three-phase power transformer model into distribution system load flow analysis

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a new and simple method to incorporate three-phase power transformer model into distribution system load flow (DSLF) analysis. The objective of the present work is to find a robust and efficient technique for modeling and integrating power transformer in the DSLF analysis. The proposed transformer model is derived based on nodal admittance matrix and formulated by using the symmetrical component theory. Load flow formulation in terms of branch currents and nodal voltages is also proposed in this paper to enable integrating the model into the DSLF analysis. Singularity that makes the calculations in forward/backward sweep (FBS) algorithm is difficult to be carried out. It can be avoided in the method. The proposed model is verified by using the standard IEEE test system

In recent years, huge developments in wind energy production and meet consumer demand. Numerous researchers have focused on maximum energy generation techniques for the wind system. The main reason for this work is to compare the different smart controllers for the maximum power generation techniques in the wind system. In this article, we developed and modeled a 250-watt wind power system in a MATLAB environment and simulated it in different weather conditions. Based on the simulation results, two intelligent controllers, such as fuzzy and ANFIS, were proposed and compared to obtain the maximum energy generation techniques in the wind system. Finally, the optimal smart controller was chosen based on performance
