Performance enhancement of shunt active power filter using soft computing techniques

    Get PDF
Nowadays, active power filter (APF) is the most popular device for harmonic compensation. This paper presents the soft computing techniques for compensation of currents harmonics using a shunt active power filter (SAPF). The method includes a 3-phase supply system with a current-controlled voltage source converter (CC-VSC) having an input coupling inductor and output tank capacitor for a self-supported DC bus. The performance of the active power filter can be enhanced by using soft computing techniques such as artificial neural network (ANN) controller and gravitational search algorithm (GSA) for generating control signals of the SAPF. The current reference is calculated to compensate source current THD with synchronous reference frame (SRF) technique with proportional integrator (PI) controller. From the result, it is evident that both the soft computing techniques reduce the computational time & fast convergence which improves the filter performance during the transient period and makes it self-tuned. The proposed structure is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink and subsequently experimentally verified. The presentation of the system is originated to be suitable for numerous features of power quality enhancement structure

Dynamic voltage restorer using sliding mode controller: Experimental studies

    Get PDF
The simulation and implementation of a sliding mode control strategy for a single-phase dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) to mitigate load voltage sag swell and harmonics is presented in this work. The control strategy's goal is to compensate for the required voltage by regulating the DVR's voltage via an injection transformer while keeping the load voltage constant. The ability of the DVR to achieve a good performance greatly depends on its control strategy. The controller used in this work is based on SMC theory, which consists of creating a passivation output and a storage function to use as a function of Lyapunov. The proposed control scheme of the DVR is initially evaluated in simulations using MATLAB and validated using a laboratory-scale prototype of the entire system, including a source, the DVR circuit and a load. The control scheme is implemented on a dSPACE 1104 board and the MATLAB real-time toolbox. Both the experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness the proposed control strategy of DVR in mitigating power qualities issues and therefore enhancing the performance of the network

Prospects of regenerative current breaking in DC circuit breaker topology

    Get PDF
Due to the stunning advancement of power electronics, DC power system is getting immense attention in the field of research. Protection and hereafter the protective devices for the DC power system application are two vital areas that need to be explored and developed further. Designing a protective device such as DC circuit breaker possesses a lot of challenges. The main challenge is to interrupt a current which does not have a natural zero crossing like AC current has. In addition, energy is stored in the network inductances during normal operation. Instantaneous current breaking is opposed by this stored energy during circuit breaker tripping, hence, all the DC circuit breaker topologies proposed in literature use snubber network, nonlinear resistor to dissipate this stored energy as heat during the current breaking operation. However, it is possible to store this energy momentarily and reuse it later by developing an improvised topology. In this paper, the prospects of energy recovery and reuse in a DC circuit breaker was studied and a new topology with regenerative current breaking capability had been proposed. This new topology can feed the stored energy of the network back into the same network after breaking the current and thus can improve the overall system efficiency

Spectral effects and determining the solar spectral distribution for Mugla and Ankara

    Get PDF
Not only is the theoretical calculation of the amount of solar radiation but also the characteristics of the light so significant in deciding the spectral sensitivity of the PV modules. The amount of radiation reaching on the earth depends on many atmospheric parameters such as wavelength and air mass. Spectral 2 is a model that calculates the amount of radiation for any region depending on the wavelength and atmospheric parameters. There are no theoretical and experimental studies on this subject in Turkey until now. In this study, the amounts of radiation coming to the surface having horizontal and different tilt angles were calculated for Mugla and Ankara. Due to the different climatic characteristics of Mugla and Ankara, the amount of radiation varies. According to the results, in winter and autumn, the amount of radiation which comes to Ankara and Mugla, is different each other. Due to the different climatical and geographical characteristics of Mugla and Ankara, the amount of radiation varies. The model, which is used in this study, due to atmospheric effects that have, is more comprehensive than any other empirical models made in Turkey

Factual power loss lessening by synthetic supportive exploration algorithm

In this work an innovative synthetic supportive exploration (SSE) algorithm is utilized for solving optimal reactive power problem. Projected algorithm is based on communication between two simulated fabulous creatures as both of them intermingle and voyage to altered zones to find comprehensive minimum. In a definite zone according to the climate altering conditions amount of food can be found will be varied. Due to this reason, fabulous creatures develop seasonal exodus deeds to find out improved food sources. Earlier to exodus fabulous creatures will divide into subgroups in order to find an improved food source. Coordination of sub-groups will determine the performance of the search. Communication and exploration are the two key deeds of the fabulous creatures. Also, the two fabulous creatures make a decision on the marauder and prey by the sub fabulous creature. Proposed synthetic supportive exploration (SSE) algorithm has been tested in IEEE 14 and 300 bus systems. Real power loss power loss reduction achieved

Induction motor drive based on direct torque controlled used multi-pulse AC-DC rectifier

    Get PDF
This paper presents the direct torque-controlled induction motor drives (DTCIMDs) based on a retrofit 44-pulse rectifier (44PR). A 22-phase polygon autotransformer (PA) is designed to supply the rectifiers. The above structure improves the power quality standards in the power grid and complies with the requirements of the IEEE-519 standard for different loads. Besides, a power factor close to one is obtained for a wide range of DTCIMD performance. The results show that the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the input current under variable loads for 44PR is less than 3%

    Get PDF
With advances in solid-state power electronic devices, control techniques (PWM) have been devised to obtain high dynamics responses from a multilevel power conditioning converter-Photovoltaic. This work discusses the advantages and drawbacks of two different PWM techniques, the sinusoidal (SPWM) technique and the Third harmonic injection PWM (THIPWM) technique. These two methods are compared by discussing their ease of implementation and by analyzing the output harmonic spectra of various output voltage and their total harmonic distortion (THD). The focus of this paper is the simulation study of single-phase inverter, three phases, two levels and three levels inverter for application photovoltaic. Firstly, single phase is modeled with inductive load and their waveforms are observed. Secondly, a two levels inverter, and three levels inverter are leading to the high industrial performances of the drives synchronous, especially, if a high-power quality is requested

Investigation of 22 kV silane cure TR-EPR cable

    Get PDF
EPR-insulated cables for distribution power network are not commonly used in Australia. This is due to the higher DDF of common EPR cables when compared with XLPE that contributes to the power loss and economics in transmitting electricity. This led to the development of EPR called TR-EPR with significantly lower DDF and uses silane curing process to address concerns about cost-effectiveness. The thermal behavior of low DDF silane cure TR-EPR is investigated for 30 months of exposure to the maximum operating temperature of material. The physical changes in the samples throughout the long-term aging are examined to create an opportunity to model the expected life cycle of TR-EPR cable under thermal stress. The cross-linking characteristics of TR-EPR cable are also examined by ambient curing that simulates the storage condition for unused cable and by cable heating process that simulates the condition when the cable is energized. The results are tabulated for a better understanding of the time for the material to cross-link at various conditions. The improved partial discharge values after cross-linking are also presented
