Due to the great level of wind energy penetration in the existing network, huge efforts have been directed to enhance the grid-connected wind generator performance. This paper shows an application of a hybrid algorithm of the particle swarm optimization and the gravitational search algorithm (PSO-GSA) to enhance the transient stability of the grid-tied wind energy conversion system. The variable-speed wind turbine (VSWT) direct-drive permanent-magnet synchronous generator is connected to the network through a full-scale converter. The generator- and grid-side converters are controlled by utilizing an optimum proportional-integral (PI) controller. The criterion of the integral squared error is utilized as an objective function. The PSO-GSA based-PI controller efficacy is validated by comparing its results with that are obtained by utilizing the genetic algorithm (GA)-based-PI controller. The performance of the suggested control scheme is checked during various fault conditions. The control scheme quality is legalized by the simulation results that are obtained using MATLAB/Simulink progra

Ranking of hydropower projects based on sustainability criteria in India using multicriteria decision making methods

    Get PDF
Assessment of hydropower projects with respect to sustainability criteria is a multidimensional and a complex issue that decision makers usually face during planning process. In hydropower projects, it is important to consider technical, environmental and social parameters instead of purely economic ones for sustainability assessment and decision making. Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods offer a practical approach to a problem having conflicting criteria. The flexibility to consider several criteria and objectives simultaneously made MCDM methods well accepted in the field of energy planning. This paper aims for applicability of MCDM methods which will facilitate the decision makers to select the most sustainable hydropower projects by making real and logical choices based on various sustainability criteria. For comprehensively rank hydropower projects of Indian region based on sustainability criteria four MCDM methods are applied i.e., analytic hierarchy process (AHP), technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluations (PROMETHEE II) and elimination and choice translating reality (ELECTRE III). To ensure better decision making the eight criteria selected are compatible to the sustainable development of hydropower projects

    Get PDF
Nested neutral-point clamped multi level inverter with inter connection to grid through the synchronous reference frame (SRF) controller for synchronization of voltage to the grid is demonstrated. The system's main feature is that voltage stress in each inverter switching device is kept to a minimum, and redundant inverter switching states are utilised for neutral point and flying capacitor voltage balancing with sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique, synchronisation to grid voltages, and power injection with low harmonic generation. The inverter receives its input from a photovoltaic (PV) source that is coupled to DC-DC booster converters that are regulated by the maximum power point (MPP) tracking incremental conductance algorithm to maintain a constant dc voltage. The system is examined under various load conditions with MATLAB/Simulink model

Calculation and measurement of ampacity for class 5 flexible aluminum cable at 110 °C

    Get PDF
Class 5 flexible aluminum conductors are not common in cable manufacturing industry due to insufficient study on cable joints and connectors. The table of ampacities for aluminum conductors at 110 °C in AS/NZS3008.1.1 standards are also not available as a reference guide for electrical system designers that restricts the installation of aluminum low voltage (LV) cabling system to operate at 90 °C of conductor maximum operating temperature where 110 °C cables are permitted in Australia. In this paper, the cable ampacities of various LV Class 5 flexible aluminum cables at maximum operating temperature of 110 °C are calculated using IEC60287 and AS/NZ3008.1.1 standards. The calculated ampacities from the formula presented in clause 4.4. of AS/NZS3008.1.1 are verified by using the 6kA inductive current generator to determine the suitability for use. The joint temperature between cable and shear bolt mechanical connectors are simultaneoulsy simulated using the calculated ampacities to determine the suitability of mechanical shear bolt connectors when the coefficient of thermal expansion of material is considered. The observed differences between the calculated and measured values demonstrate the relevance of formula used in determining the current ampacity at 110 °C conductor temperature in free air
