    No full text
Master of Arts in Monitoring and EvaluationProject monitoring and evaluation plays a crucial role in project performance. Innovative monitoring and evaluation strategies have become increasingly important in recent years, with many organizations considering their uptake. Solid waste management refers to source separation, storage, collection, transportation, and disposal of waste in an environmentally sustainable manner. This study sought to evaluate the effects of innovative monitoring and evaluation strategies on project performance of the solid waste management project in Juba City Council, South Sudan. The study objectives were to establish the innovative monitoring and evaluation strategies employed in solid waste management projects; assess the performance of solid waste management projects; and evaluate the effects of innovative monitoring and evaluation strategies on project performance. This study was anchored on results-based management theory and theory of change. Results-based management approach theory is a widely used monitoring and evaluation strategy that focuses on achieving measurable results while the theory of change is a planning and evaluation framework that is used to map out the causal pathways that lead from inputs to desired outcomes. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The population of the research study comprised 2,000 staff working in Juba City Council. This research employed a census approach, entailing the collection of data from every member of the study population. The study’s target population comprised 66 staff of the Juba City Council solid waste management project. Data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire that included both open-ended and closed-ended questions. A pretest was conducted to ensure the validity and reliability of the questionnaire. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 21, was used to analyze the data. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were presented in tables. The results showed a significant relationship between innovative monitoring and evaluation strategies and project performance (F-statistic = 27.965, Sig. .002). Stakeholder engagement improved decision-making, enhanced accountability, and increased transparency as key benefits. The study underscored the critical role of innovative monitoring and evaluation strategies in achieving successful solid waste management by facilitating better decision-making, promoting accountability and transparency, and enabling adaptive management practices based on real-time data. The study concluded that innovative monitoring and evaluation strategies significantly enhance the performance of the Juba City Council's solid waste management project. Furthermore, the recommendations presented align with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and Sustainable Development Goal 3 (good health and well-being), as well as South Sudan's development agenda and Vision 2040. Future research and initiatives could build upon this study’s foundation by exploring impactful and cost-effective innovative monitoring and evaluation approaches for diverse contexts. Investigating the integration of new technologies and data analytics into monitoring and evaluation practices holds significant promise for further optimization. Developing clear guidelines for implementing innovative monitoring and evaluation in solid waste management can also contribute to broader adoption and success. This demonstrates the potential of innovative monitoring and evaluation strategies to contribute to broader societal goals of environmental sustainability, public health, and economic development.Daystar University, School of Applied Human Science

Innovation Strategies and Performance of Pension Funds in Kenya: A Case of County Pension Fund.

    No full text
MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION in Strategic ManagementThe Kenyan pension industry has been undergoing a transformative period, characterized by intense competition and a rapid adoption of emerging technologies. The landscape has become increasingly dynamic as pension funds strive to attract and retain members, provide exceptional service, and offer innovative products. The integration of new technologies, such as mobile banking, blockchain, and online portals, has been a key differentiator for Kenyan pension funds, as they seek to meet the evolving needs and expectations of their members. There is still a scarcity of academic research into how innovation strategies affect the performance of pension funds, and in this case, the County Pension Fund (CPF), a pension scheme administrator in Kenya. The County Pension Fund faces a decline in its value due to underfunding by employers, high operational costs, and low pension uptake. These issues have been exacerbated by shifting economic conditions and increased competition across industries, leading to fluctuations in fund profits. Despite the fund's success in encouraging consumer savings, these challenges posed a significant threat to its long-term viability. This study explores the innovation strategies on the performance of the County Pension Fund (CPF). The purpose of the study was to establish the innovation strategies adopted by the County Pension Fund in Kenya. Additionally, the research objectives included assessing whether these strategies helped improve the performance of the fund and determining the influence of product, process, and organizational innovation on the County Pension Fund. The theories in this study included the Diffusion of Innovation Theory, Dynamic Capability Theory, and the Schumpeter Innovation Theory. The study used descriptive-correlational as the research design. A census approach was adopted to select participants from the target population, which comprised 108 CPF employees and 12 NSSF staff bringing to a total of 120. Data collection utilized semi-structured questionnaires, with rigorous pretesting to ensure the validity and reliability of the research instruments. In this research, internal validity and retest reliability were used for accuracy and unbiased data collection. Analysis of the statistical data was done using SPSS 23 software, with pretesting involving 20 questionnaires, representing 10% of the total sample. This study's significance lies in bridging existing knowledge gaps regarding the role of innovation strategies in pension fund performance, thereby advancing theoretical understanding and offering practical insights to CPF and similar entities. Ultimately, the findings aimed at contributing to enhancing performance efficiency and fostering the growth of pension funds. The study findings indicate that innovation strategies significantly enhance the performance of the County Pension Fund (CPF) by improving operational efficiency, member contributions, and fund size. The results indicated a significant positive correlation between the types of innovation strategies and the effectiveness of these strategies, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.440 (p < 0.01). Conclusions drawn from the research suggest that adopting innovative strategies is critical to enhancing pension performance. The study recommends that CPF continue to invest in technological innovations, streamline processes, and develop new products to meet the evolving needs of its members as well as adopt alternative investment strategies to ensure long-term sustainability

Master of Arts in Child DevelopmentMany children in Kenya are exposed to abuse and neglect, however these risks are highly under researched. This descriptive study assessed the risk factors of abuse and neglect in Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers in Mathare Sub-county, Kenya. The study’s objectives were to identify the forms of abuse and neglect, assess risk factors, and establish the protective factors implemented in ECD centers. The study was guided by Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory and Abraham Maslow’s theory of hierarchy of needs. The target population comprised teachers, parents, and key informants. A sample of 210 participants was drawn from a population of 1,457, and a response rate of 86% was achieved. Data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires, risk maps, interview schedules, and focus group discussions (FGDs). Quantitative data was analyzed using Ms. Excel and Jamovi computer software and presented in frequencies and percentages. Qualitative data was analyzed as per the study’s objectives into emerging themes and presented in direct narrations. The study found that 41.8% of children had experienced physical abuse, 8.2% emotional abuse, and 4.1% sexual abuse. The most significant risk factors at the individual level were self-care inability, with 17% of children predisposed, and physical and cognitive disability, with 11% of children predisposed. At the institutional level, the most significant risk factors were high student-to-teacher ratio and low supervision reported by 60.7% and 18% of respondents, respectively. Additionally, risk mapping exposed the positioning of toilets and children going home unaccompanied as significant risk factors. Protective factors identified included the provision of essential services and strict supervision of children. The study concluded that some of the ECD centers were unsafe with the presence of risk factors and established the occurrence of abuse. Thus, it is recommended that ECD centers prioritize risk assessments to identify and mitigate abuse and neglect.Daystar University, School of Applied Human Science
