The Older Viewers‘ Perception of Female News Anchors‘ Attractive Body Language and its Influence on Attention to News: A Case of Two Television Channels in Kenya.
No full textDOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in CommunicationTelevision news, in part, aims to convey factual information to the audience. However, the body language of female television news anchors, seemingly receives much attention from the viewers. As a result, viewers concentrate on this rather than the information which is being conveyed. With this in mind, this study set out to examine the older viewers‘ (50-70 years) perception of female television news anchors‘ attractive body language and its influence on attention to news. In order to unpack this, three research questions guided this study: What are the perceptions of the older viewers on the body language of Kenyan female television news anchors? Which factors influence female television news anchors‘ attractive appearance on Kenyan TV? How does the body language of the female television news anchors influence the older viewers‘ choice of the television broadcast to view? ; Why do perceived cultural behaviours of the older viewers on the body language of the female television news anchors affect family television viewership? The study was anchored on qualitative research approach, involving older television news viewers in Rongo Sub- County who watched television. Insights from the kinesics, social perception, gaze and attractiveness attention boost theories were blended in the study. An interview guide was developed to generate data through the face to face interviews and focus group discussions. I was also bale to observe these viewers‘ watching news in their natural setting. The data was analysed thematically before the final narrative. The study established that simple smart news anchors catch attention of viewers; news anchors having appearance with sexual appeal distract the older viewers; TV managements don‘t promote news anchors which is why they resort to self-marketing through attractive body language. Majority of news anchors‘ physical appearance is distractive to news. The findings showed that the attractive appearance of the female television news anchors to catch the attention of the audience was a professional lap. The study concludes that older viewers are attracted to news when the news anchor is simple smart, but they are distracted when the appearance of the news anchor portrays sexual appeal. Hence, a recommendation to the policy makers, CA, MCK to ensure media houses strengthen the use of existing media code of ethics to improve the professionalism of the news anchors, media houses to use simple smart news
anchor and to market the news anchors to avoid self commodification/marketing/promotion
Assessing The Factors Hindering Uptake of Counseling Services Among Clergy; A Case of The Africa Gospel Church in Nairobi County, Kenya

in counseling PsychologyThis study investigated the factors hindering clergy members of the Africa Gospel Church in Nairobi County from utilizing counseling services for mental health issues, particularly anxiety and depression. Despite the high prevalence of these conditions among clergy, there remains a significant gap in the uptake of professional mental health support. The study was guided by the following objectives: assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression among Clergy members in the Africa Gospel Church within Nairobi County, determine uptake of counseling services among clergy members, establish factors hindering clergy members in the Africa Gospel Church- Kenya from utilizing counseling services, and determine the coping mechanisms used by clergy to deal with psychological problems. Using descriptive research design, the study employed census sampling technique. Primary data was gathered through quantitative method by use of structured questionnaires and interviews, focusing on demographic variables such as age, gender, and level of leadership as well as stigma associated with mental health, cost of counseling services, attitude towards counseling, lack of awareness of existence of services, and perceived inefficacy of counseling services as barriers to seeking professional counseling services. Additionally, the study highlights the role of religious and cultural beliefs in shaping attitudes towards mental health care. To analyze quantitative data, statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS) was employed. This study provides useful information about prevalence of anxiety and depression among clergy and the factors hindering them from seeking psychological counseling, as well as provide recommendations to the church stakeholders for possible inclusion in policy making so as to improve the mental health of clergy. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of clergy members experience anxiety and depression, with 65% reporting moderate to severe levels of these mental health conditions. Despite this, the uptake of counseling services remains low, with only 28% of clergy reporting seeking professional help. Factors hindering the utilization of counseling services include stigma, fear of judgment, limited awareness, and the belief that prayer alone suffices for mental health support. Coping mechanisms identified among the clergy include prayer, spiritual practices, and support from fellow clergy members. The study concludes that the mental health needs of clergy are critical yet often overlooked, with significant barriers to accessing professional counseling services. The study recommends that church leaders and policymakers in religious institutions prioritize mental health awareness among clergy by integrating mental health education and counseling services into their wellness programs. Additionally, there is a need for mental health training for clergy to reduce stigma and promote the acceptance of professional counseling services.Daystar University, School of Applied Human Science

No full textConference PaperIn Kenya, the public health profession faces several challenges which contribute to noncompliance with public health requirements. Machine learning (ML), and Artificial intelligence (AI) tools have become popular in the country, and globally, such as ChatGPT. ML and AI can leverage public health activities and improve the outcomes and practice competence during premise inspections. This study aims to examine ML and AI’s role in advancing public health officers’ practice with a focus on premise inspection. Digital tools can generate output for premise inspection in various priority areas and compared with contemporary public health practices, and existing public health literature. The key priorities in sanitary premise inspection for compliance with public health to be examined will include sanitary inspection goals, inspection forms, licenses and certificates, and sanitary requirements for food premises. The contextual role of ML and AI will be discussed to establish their relevance to improving public health services in domains such as inspection, checklist development, inspection report writing, and premise compliance with statutory notices among premise owners. AI must be thoughtfully embraced at professional level (public health officers, health structure, health service tiers). This is because it can generate trustworthy suggestions for premise inspection and evade committing public health offences. In this regard, AI can potentially play a role in preventing diseases and promoting health in both urban and rural communities. Recommendations will be provided on limitations encountered and appropriate suggestions given on the potential value or opportunities of ML and Ai in public health inspections.Daystar Universit
Rhetoric’s Impact on the Creation of Laws and Regulations for Responsible AI Development
No full textConference PaperRapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have raised concerns about the potential effects these technologies may have on society and the need for robust legal and regulatory frameworks to ensure responsible development. In this case, rhetoric is essential to building these frames. The search results show how industry associations and AI companies are using persuasive communication strategies to frame the "AI ethics" argument in a way that favors self-regulation over more legal authority. Oftentimes at the expense of addressing fundamental issues of accountability, bias, and human rights, rhetoric is being used to downplay the risks associated with AI systems and to promote a narrative of technological progress and advancement. However, advocates of more stringent legal frameworks to regulate the development and use of AI are utilizing language to back up politicians, legal experts, and civil society organizations. They are highlighting the flaws in industry-led "AI ethics" programs and advocating for the law and legal institutions to take a leading role in ensuring the moral application of these revolutionary technologies. The search results also demonstrate the impact of language on court cases and trials concerning the use of copyrighted information by generative AI models, which has significant implications for the evolving legal landscape. Additionally, studies have shown that the way artificial intelligence's "risks" and "benefits" are framed rhetorically can influence how the public perceives and embraces these technologies, which in turn influences how laws and policies are put into place. By examining the role of rhetoric in this context, academics can provide insight on the complex interplay between language, power, and the management of AI systems. Assessing The United Nations Mission In South Sudan’s Efforts to Protect Internally Displaced Persons in Malakal-Upper Nile State, South Sudan.
No full textMaster of Arts in Diplomacy, Development, and International SecurityThis study assessed the United Nations Mission in South Sudan’s Protection of Internally Displaced Persons in Malakal-Upper Nile State, South Sudan. The United Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) was initially tasked with securing peace and security in line with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Its mandate included facilitating the voluntary return of refugees and internally displaced persons, delivering humanitarian assistance, and supporting the protection and promotion of human rights in South Sudan. The following objectives influenced the study; firstly, it examined factors that influence the effectiveness of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in protecting Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in MalakalUpper Nile state. Secondly, it analyzed the humanitarian conditions of the IDPs in the Malakal-Upper Nile state. Third, it assessed the challenges facing UNMISS in protecting IDPS in the Malakal-Upper Nile state. Moreover, the theoretical framework used is the humanitarian theory which investigated the function of humanitarian aid to defend and advance human rights and lessen the impacts of wars and natural catastrophes. The study employed a qualitative methodology with a purposive sampling technique with a sample size of 45 respondents who will engage in in-depth interviews and focus group discussions to gather information from key informants conversing with the mandate and operations of UNMISS. Qualitative data sought to draw themes that are consistent with research objectives. The study integrated findings from focus groups and interviews to comprehensively understand UNMISS's role in safeguarding IDPs. Focus groups with IDPs and key stakeholders revealed their experiences and perspectives, while interviews with local officials, UNMISS staff, and NGO workers highlighted the mission's challenges and successes. The data was analyzed thematically to identify key factors influencing UNMISS's effectiveness. Additionally, content analysis of secondary sources complemented the findings, offering a well-rounded view of the mission's impact and implications for policy and practice. The study involved fifty-eight respondents, including eighteen individuals who participated in interviews and forty participants across four focus groups, each comprising ten participants. The conversation aligned with humanitarian theory, which highlighted the significance of attending to both short-term requirements and long-term growth. However, UNMISS's real-world difficulties are a stark reminder of the disconnect between idealistic theory and practical implementation. For the mission to be more effective and to accomplish more comprehensive humanitarian aims, it is imperative that resource constraints be addressed, coordination be strengthened, and communication with Internally Displaced Persons be improved. The findings on the impact of protection will enrich knowledge about the effectiveness of UN protection missions in Africa.Daystar University, School of Arts and Social Science
