To attain this, the study employed various theoretical framework including the Compliance-based theory and Refugee Aid theory. Using the qualitative research method, the study adopted the descriptive research design in its undertaking with the aim of collecting qualitative data using various data collection tools such as the Key Informants Interviews and Focused Group Discussions. Given the vast number and backgrounds of refugees living within Eastleigh area, the study adopted a Purposive and Snowball sampling techniques to obtain a sample frame from urban Somali refugees, government and non-government organizations such as the Department of Refugee Services, the UNHCR, Refugee Consortium of Kenya, Kituo Cha Sheria, Community and Faith Based Organizations who provided the study’s primary data. The research equally encompasses secondary data obtained from secondary sources such as the Acts of Parliament, Conventions, books, journals, online sources etc. The collected data has been analyzed using the Thematic Analysis method which findings and recommendations are utilized for enrichment to stakeholders, policy development and adoption of a possible permanent solution to the refugee crisis in Kenya and relative jurisdictions.Daystar University, School of Arts and Social Science
Relationship Between Utilization of Peer Counselling Services and Decision Making among Adolescents in Selected Secondary Schools in Thika Sub County, Kiambu County, Kenya.
MASTERS in Clinical PsychologyThis study aimed to investigate the relationship between the utilization of peer counselling services and decision-making among adolescents within selected secondary schools in Thika sub-county, Kiambu County, Kenya. Acknowledging the emotional turmoil adolescents go through while making decisions in this developmental phase, the researcher endeavoured to understand whether the levels of uptake of peer counselling services provided in school can affect such a crucial process. The researcher had several specific objectives including determining the levels of utilization of peer counselling services of students in these schools, assessing their decision making, and testing the relationship between peer counselling and the decision making of these adolescent students. The study employed a correlational cross sectional research design. The research used a sample size of 267 students from Thika Garrison Secondary School and Gatuanyaga Secondary School. This study used quantitative methods to collect data using questionnaires. The questionnaire comprised three sections: sociodemographic information, a survey on the utilization of peer counselling services, and the Adolescent Decision-Making Questionnaire. Data was collected from the two schools denoting A and B. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 26, software with both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics were employed to measure group differences from the demographic data while inferential statistics were adopted to test the relationship between study variables. The study revealed that peer counseling services are widely known and accessible among adolescent students, with nearly all respondents aware of the service and many finding it easy to access. Teachers play a pivotal role in promoting peer counseling, as most students learned about the services through them. While the majority of students utilize these services, there is still potential to encourage more consistent attendance. Among the recommendations of the study were that schools should create awareness campaigns or incentive programs to encourage more frequent and consistent attendance, emphasizing the long-term benefits of peer counseling on academic, social, and emotional well-being. Similarly, schools should collaborate with psychologists and counselors to develop specific programs aimed at family dynamics, improving students' ability to navigate family challenges through counseling
Framing Kenyan Churches' Response to Climate Change: Content Analysis of Daily Nation and The Standard Newspapers.
MASTER OF ARTS in CommunicationScholars have pointed out that one of the pressing and threatening concerns in society today is climate change, causing temperature disparity, biodiversity loss, and ecological imbalance. This is affecting both social and environmental determinants in people’s lives. Various actors including Churches in Kenya are striving towards combating this menace. According to some scholars, Churches have played a part in the destruction of the environment, and they have not been actively taking care of the creation. In this regard, researchers have called for the media to increase its coverage to influence the public’s thinking and stimulate aggressive action in addressing climate change. Employing descriptive research design and framing theory, this study sought to gain insight into how the Daily Nation and The Standard Newspapers frame Kenyan Churches' response to climate change. The research focused on three main objectives: Identifying the sources for coverage, the frequency of coverage, and how the newspapers frame the Churches' responses to climate change. This research is for a period of four years from January 2020 to December 2023. Through the use of ‘The Meltwater Media monitoring software tool’ to mine stories, a quantitative content analysis method was used to collect data, and a total of 162 articles were accessed. 88 articles were from the Daily Nation and 74 articles were from The Standard newspaper. Based on the available data the study employed a census approach for all news items. The results evidenced that the media frame Churches as key pillars of moral obligations as most stories were framed on the social responsibility of the Church and their commitment to social justice and promoting compassion for others in society. The media also portrayed Churches to be dedicated to creating public awareness on the effects of climate change calling people to act through tree planting and supporting green innovation. However, the media did not rely much on government officials as significant sources. These leaders contributed very little to how Churches respond to climate change. This shows that there is minimal collaboration between religious and government leaders. Consequently, there is minimal coverage of Churches’ response to climate change, and the results evidenced that the two papers Daily Nation and The Standard newspapers did not have frequent coverage of Churches on this concern. In four years, only 162 stories were covered by the media. This study concludes that mainstream media in Kenya focus more on Churches’ response to climate change during floods and droughts when Churches’ are involved in social responsibility activities. The media do not concentrate much on mitigation and adaptation responses by Churches. The research recommends a comparative study on how broadcast and print media cover Churches' response to climate change. Other studies could explore Church media channels in Kenya and examine how they frame Churches' response to climate change as the current study focused on mainstream medi
Project Management Practices and Performance of Government Housing Projects in Kenya: A Case of Kiambu County
Master of Business Administration in Project ManagementProject success or failure frequently depends on project management practices adopted in the projects. Empirical literature has shown that projects adopt different project management practices which influence performance with Kenyan studies showing research gaps. Further, Kiambu County has experienced an increase in government housing projects but performing poorly in terms of cost overruns, delays in completion and poor-quality projects. This study sought to establish the effect of project management practices on the performance of government housing projects in Kiambu County, Kenya. The objectives were; to establish the extent of adoption of project management practices in government housing projects; assess performance of government housing projects; and evaluate the effect of project management practices on performance of government housing projects in Kiambu County, Kenya. A descriptive correlational research design was adopted on a population of 10344 individuals in the government housing projects in Kenya. This study targeted 546 project managers, project finance officers and the liaison officers in government housing projects within Kiambu County. The research sample of 231 respondents calculated through Yamane formula and selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. This study adopted structured questionnaire collecting primary data. The questionnaires were self-administered through a drop-wait-and-pick methodology. Pretesting of the questionnaire was done to 23 respondents in housing projects within Nairobi County. Validity was checked through content validity index (CVI) with reliability checked through Cronbach alpha looking at internal consistency. The data was analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings were presented in tabular form for ease of interpretation. Findings showed that there was implementation of project management practices of project risk management, stakeholder engagement and project cost management. The performance of these projects was, however, poor in terms of costs, quality and timelines. The regression analysis showed that project risk management had a positive effect on project performance. Further, stakeholder engagement also showed a positive effect on project performance. In addition, project cost management showed a positive effect on project performance. The study concluded that project management practices of project risk management, stakeholder engagement and project cost management have a positive effect on the performance of government housing projects in Kiambu County, Kenya. It recommends more robust risk management practices to address current performance issues in the government housing projects in Kiambu County. This study recommends that other researcher undertake a similar study based on other factors influencing project performance, other measures of project performance, different projects as well as other counties in Kenya.Daystar University, School of Business and Economic

A Communication Audit of Medical Colleges: A Case of Kenya Medical Training College.
MASTER OF ARTS in CommunicationAn internal communication audit, or simply CA, as it is variously known, is important in ensuring the success of an organization by checking how well a brand keeps in touch with its stakeholders. This case study on KMTC assessed information flow among the various departments and teams at the college. It focused on focus areas in the sufficiency, efficiency, and effectiveness of both formal and informal channels, with stakeholder feedback solicited on communication preference. Guided by the Excellence and Stakeholder Theory, the study probed into KMTC's communication structures, channels, and engagement with its stakeholders. The main internal communication channels of print, electronic, face-to-face, and social media were well known. Among the many ways of communication that were mentioned, print media was highly ranked, followed by social media, then electronic media, and finally face-to-face. However, there were observations made in regard to some areas where the general flow of information was not good enough. Print media only moderately met the needs of stakeholders for information. Social media ranked highest in timeliness and effectiveness at 36.8% very strong and 29.9% strong. This was meant to establish whether the flow of information flow was effective, where 33.33% agreed that the flow of information was effective and 16.67% suggested that the effectiveness of the communication depends on the target audience. Generally, a third believed that information flow in KMTC is ineffective and needs further improvement. The use of electronic channels, that have the potential to reach wider audiences at cheaper costs, like phone calls, text messages, college websites, and student portals, was found to be minimal. The study recommends investment in digital communication, safe exploitation of social media, improvement in internet connectivity, enhancement of power backup systems to ensure better quality in communication
