    No full text
MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION in Project ManagementCross-cultural communication is the process of exchanging information between individuals from different cultural backgrounds, aimed at fostering understanding, collaboration, and shared goals. In project management, particularly within international and culturally diverse environments, effective cross-cultural communication plays a crucial role in overcoming barriers related to language, values, and practices. This study investigates the effect of cross-cultural communication on project performance, focusing on USAID’s Kenya Integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (KIWASH) project. The study's objectives were to examine the cross-cultural communication practices employed in the KIWASH project, assess its overall performance, and determine how communication across cultures influences project outcomes. Anchored in the Cross-Cultural Communication Competence (CCC) Model, the study highlights critical communication skills such as interpersonal interactions, team effectiveness, cultural empathy, and cultural uncertainty. Supporting this model, Adaptation Theory explores how individuals and teams adjust to new cultural environments, while the Triple Constraint Triangle provides a framework for evaluating project performance in terms of scope, time, and cost. Additionally, the Behavioral Theory of Leadership explains the moderating role of leadership styles in enhancing communication and project outcomes, particularly emphasizing democratic and participative approaches that foster cohesive team environments. A descriptive research design was employed, with the unit of analysis being the management personnel involved in the KIWASH project. A census approach was used to gather data from all 81-management staff, ensuring comprehensive input from all individuals overseeing the project. Data collection was conducted using structured questionnaires designed to capture both quantitative and qualitative aspects of cross-cultural communication practices and their relationship to project performance. The validity and reliability of the research instruments were confirmed through a pre-test study. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, facilitated by SPSS (Statistical Program for the Social Sciences) version 28. Results were presented through tables and figures, illustrating key trends and correlations. The study revealed that cross-cultural communication practices—particularly interpersonal skills, team effectiveness, and cultural empathy—significantly correlated with project performance. These practices foster better alignment among team members, reduce miscommunication, and enhance overall project efficiency. Leadership styles grounded in the Behavioral Theory of Leadership significantly promote team effectiveness, resource optimization, and improved project outcomes. The study concludes that cross-cultural communication is essential for the success of international development projects, especially in culturally diverse settings. Based on these findings, it is recommended that organizations implement comprehensive training programs focused on cross-cultural communication skills, emphasizing interpersonal skills and cultural empathy. Fostering inclusive leadership styles that promote open communication will further enhance team dynamics and resource optimization. Regular evaluations of cross-cultural communication practices should be integrated into project management processes to proactively identify and address barriers. By prioritizing these recommendations, organizations can significantly improve project outcomes and contribute to achieving sustainable development goals

The target population was the 230 personnel at Nairobi Hospital arrived at through stratified sampling technique. The sample size was 146 respondents arrived at through Yamane Taro formula. Primary data was obtained from the respondents using a structured questionnaire. Content, construct, and face validity was assessed before data analysis. Descriptive statistics was also employed using central tendency metrics summarization like mean as well as disparities like standard deviation. Inferential statistics was used to determine how management involvement practices influence implementation of projects. From the data analysis, the reliability test confirmed the reliability of the data, generating Cronbach’s alpha values above 0.7 which was the minimum threshold for reliability. In the descriptive statistics, respondents largely agreed with the statements indicating strategic direction, resource allocation, stakeholder engagement, monitoring an evaluation, implementation of projects, and organizational culture. This was indicated by high mean scores that ranged between 3.50 and 4.90. For the inferential statistics, correlation, and regression analysis were performed. The correlation analysis showed positive and significant correlations between strategic direction and implementation of projects 0.562. Secondly, the correlation between resource allocation and implementation of projects was significant, at 0.712. indicating a strong linear correlation between resource allocation and project implementation. Moreover, project implementation also exhibited a statistically significant positive correlation with stakeholder engagement with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.917 implying that a strong linear relationship exists between stakeholder engagement and implementation of projects at the Nairobi Hospital. Finally, a strong positive correlation was established between monitoring and evaluation and the implementation of projects at the Nairobi hospital. This was established through a positive Pearson correlation of 0.947 between monitoring and evaluation and implementation of projects. The regression analysis indicat. 93.2% of project implementation is influenced by management involvement. Furthermore, a negative regression coefficient was established between implementation of projects and strategic direction (β = -0.308) while positive relationships were established between implementation and resource allocation (β = 0.211), stakeholder engagement (β = 0.232) and Monitoring and evaluation (β = 0.740) respectively

MASTER OF ARTS in Counselling PsychologyWith the global population living longer than any other time in history, many people will experience retirement, which is a period when one is separated from their everyday work. The need for this study became even more pressing with the problem statement revealing that there exists a significant gap in research available on preretirement anxiety globally and even much less is available in these parts of the world and especially among those serving in the Civil Service. The main objective of this study was to determine the effects of preretirement anxiety on psychological wellbeing of civil servants at Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS) in Kenya. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of retirement anxiety, factors that cause preretirement anxiety, the severity of preretirement anxiety, as well as the relationship between preretirement anxiety and psychological wellbeing of civil servants at KENAS. This research's findings are expected to benefit employers, those in charge of policy formulation, and employees themselves. This study was anchored on two major theories, the Continuity theory of aging and the Stimulus based stress theory. This study adopted descriptive research design. The target population for this study was the seventy-seven (77) employees who work at the KENAS. The sample size of the research was the entire population, since the population size is low, this means the researcher adopted the census technique in data collection. The researcher collected all the necessary data through a structured questionnaire and the feedback analyzed using SPSS while adopting a quantitative approach. The findings revealed a moderate to high prevalence of preretirement anxiety among the respondents. The severity of preretirement anxiety varied, with the desire to retire early having the highest mean score. Financial concerns ranked second, with over 80% of respondents agreeing or strongly agreeing to items related to financial stability post-retirement. Financial stability emerged as the most significant factor leading to retirement anxiety, with 69.2% of respondents indicating it largely contributes to this anxiety. The study found a weak negative correlation between preretirement anxiety and psychological wellbeing (r = -0.226, p = 0.071), although this relationship was not statistically significant. The study concluded that preretirement anxiety is prevalent among civil servants at KENAS, with financial stability being the most significant concern. The severity of anxiety varies across different aspects of retirement, with a strong desire to retire early coexisting with significant worries about post-retirement life, particularly regarding financial security and health. The study recommended that KENAS should implement comprehensive financial planning programs, develop health and wellness initiatives focused on maintaining physical and mental health, and create mentorship or support group programs to address fears of the unknown

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in CommunicationThis study investigated effective communication as a practice, and interrogated how the Malawi Government’s Ministry of Health (MG-MoH) engaged the principles of effective communication in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in the first year of the pandemic (2020-2021). The study’s interest was to assess the structure and process of the communication by the MG-MoH from March 2020, when Malawi declared a state of emergency and instituted mitigating measures to March 2021, when Malawi was experiencing a more devastating second wave of the pandemic. The Systems Theory provided insight into how the Malawi Government communicated COVID-19 to its citizens and the Rhetoric Theory was also used mainly on the messaging aspect. This study analysed documents to understand the Malawi Government's COVID-19 communication. The researcher used narrative inquiry methodology and conducted in-depth interviews with the local population in Salima, Lilongwe, and Mulanje districts to validate the assertions. The study aimed to understand citizens' experiences and perceptions of the Malawi Government's communication about COVID-19. The study found that the Malawi. Government’s communication strategy was effective in promoting key health behaviours and managing public expectations. The multi-channel approach ensured widespread dissemination of information, and the clarity and consistency of health messages significantly contributed to public compliance with preventive measures. However, challenges were noted, particularly concerning the reach, clarity, timeliness, and emotional impact of the messages. These issues underscore the need for enhancements in the Ministry of Health’s communication infrastructure and strategies to make future public health messaging more inclusive, transparent, and supportive
