Exploring The Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction among Junior Secondary School Interns in Kenya
Master of Education in Leadership and Policy StudiesThis study explores the factors influencing job satisfaction among intern teachers in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in Kenya, particularly within the context of implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). With intern teachers constituting 40% of the JSS workforce, their satisfaction is critical to the success of educational reforms. Drawing on Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, Social Exchange Theory, and Job Characteristics Theory, the research investigates how working conditions, professional development opportunities, interpersonal relationships, salary and benefits, and job security affect job satisfaction. It also examines the mediating role of professional self-efficacy, work-related stress, and career outlook perception. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative data from 213 survey respondents and qualitative insights from 15 interviews conducted in Machakos County. Findings reveal that inadequate compensation, limited professional support, and resource constraints significantly reduce intern teachers’ satisfaction and instructional effectiveness. The study offers actionable recommendations for policymakers, curriculum developers, and teacher training institutions to enhance working environments and support mechanisms for intern teachers, thereby strengthening CBC implementation and improving educational outcomes.Daystar Universit
From Screen to Safari: Investigating the Role of Travel Vloggers in Promoting Film-Induced Domestic Tourism in Kenya
Master of Arts In CommunicationThis study examined the role of travel vloggers in promoting film-induced domestic tourism in Kenya, guided by three objectives: determining the extent of exposure to vloggers’ content, analyzing how vlog-based film-induced tourism influences domestic travel decisions, and assessing the role of digital engagement factors such as likes, shares, and comments in shaping this influence. Grounded in the Uses and Gratifications, Film- Induced Tourism, and Source Credibility theories, the study explored how audiences actively seek gratification from credible vloggers whose cinematic storytelling enhances destination appeal and influences travel behavior. A descriptive research design was employed to capture perceptions and behavioral patterns of domestic tourists across key urban and peri-urban counties including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, and Uasin Gishu—regions characterized by high internet penetration and vibrant tourism activity. Using Yamane’s formula, a sample of 401 domestic tourists aged 18 and above was selected through a multi-stage stratified and systematic random sampling approach. Data were collected via structured online surveys and social media analytics, allowing for both perceptual and behavioral insights. Findings revealed widespread exposure to vloggers’ content, with visual storytelling, information quality, and frequency of exposure significantly influencing destination interest and travel intent. Correlation analysis confirmed that vlog-based film content strongly affected travel decisions, while digital engagement metrics amplified this influence. The study concluded that travel vloggers are key catalysts for domestic tourism by bridging digital media and travel behavior. It recommended that policymakers and industry stakeholders collaborate with vloggers to create authentic and engaging content, and that future research expand to include regression models and wider geographical coverage to enrich understanding of vloggers’ influence on domestic tourism.Daystar Universit

Masters of Art Community DevelopmentThis study sought to explore the role of empowerment programs in the livelihoods of women in Sholinke/Oloosirikon Ward, Kajiado East Sub County, Kenya. The research was guided by four specific objectives: to identify the types of empowerment programs accessible to women, to explore the nature of women's participation, to analyse the perceived effects on their livelihoods, and to propose strategies for enhancing long-term impact. A qualitative research approach, underpinned by a phenomenological design, was employed to gain an in-depth understanding of the women's lived experiences. The target population comprised women beneficiaries and facilitators of empowerment programs in the ward. A sample of 34 participants, including 17 for in-depth interviews, 13 for a focus group discussion, and 4 key informants, was selected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, a focus group discussion, and key informant interviews, and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that programs, such as vocational training and beadwork cooperatives, enhanced women's self-confidence, financial literacy, and agency in household decision-making by providing skills and supplementary income. However, the study identified significant structural barriers, including deeply ingrained patriarchal norms, a critical lack of startup capital, poor infrastructure, and insufficiently sustained mentorship, which collectively limited the programs' long-term efficacy. The study concluded that while empowerment programs are vital for socio-economic improvement, their transformative potential is constrained by systemic challenges. It recommended a multi-stakeholder approach that integrates the county government for policy and infrastructural support, NGOs for sustained funding and mentorship, and community leaders to address cultural norms, thereby ensuring programs are participatory, culturally sensitive, and structurally supported for sustainable impact.Daystar Universit

Growth Strategies and Performance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in Nairobi City County, Kenya: A Case of Somo
MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION in Strategic ManagementMicro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a pivotal role in Kenya’s economy, contributing approximately 33.8% of the GDP and providing employment to around 14.9 million people across various sectors. Despite their significant contribution, many MSMEs struggle with sustainability challenges stemming from limited financial resources, intense competition, and irregular growth patterns. This study sought to investigate the effect of growth strategies on the performance of MSMEs in Nairobi, Kenya, with a particular focus on enterprises supported by SOMO. The specific objectives were to identify the growth strategies adopted by MSMEs within SOMO, to assess the firm performance of these enterprises, and to examine the influence of growth strategies on their overall performance. The study was guided by the Ansoff Growth Model, the Resource-Based View Theory, and Strategic Group Theory. Data was collected using structured questionnaires administered to 104 respondents, of which 96 were returned, yielding a 92% response rate. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used, including correlation and regression analysis. Reliability and validity tests confirmed that the research instruments were robust, with Cronbach’s Alpha exceeding 0.7 across all constructs. The findings indicate that growth strategies positively influence MSME performance in SOMO. The correlation results indicated that product development and market development strategies had weak to modest positive relationships with performance. However, product diversification (r = 0.534, p < 0.01) and market penetration (r = 0.452, p < 0.01) showed strong and significant positive correlations with MSME performance. This suggests that enterprises engaging in diverse product offerings and effective market penetration strategies tend to achieve higher performance levels. The study concluded that effective growth strategies drive profitability, customer retention, competitive advantage, and sustainability, but their success is highly dependent on organizational culture. It recommends that MSMEs prioritize innovation, diversification, and market expansion while fostering a strong organizational culture. Policymakers should create enabling environments that support innovation and adoption of diverse growth strategies through training, financing, and capacity-building programs. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) should simplify tax processes and provide incentives, such as tax breaks for new product development and market expansion, to encourage formalization and enhance MSME success. Researchers are encouraged to extend the discourse by employing longitudinal studies to examine the dynamic effects of product development, market expansion, diversification, and penetration strategies. Investors should deliberately fund enterprises that demonstrate well-structured growth strategies, while MSMEs should focus on sustainable practices, particularly aligning product development with eco-friendly and socially responsible initiatives that resonate with evolving consumer trends.Daystar Universit

Digital Transformation Strategy and Competitive Advantage of Insurance Firms in Kenya: Case of Sanlam Kenya Plc
Master of Business Administration in Strategic ManagementIn the contemporary business landscape, the pursuit and sustenance of competitive advantage have become central themes in strategic management and innovation. In Kenya, the insurance industry is a crucial component of the financial services sector, yet it continues to grapple with sluggish growth and low market penetration estimated at just 2.3% of GDP in 2022. Between 2015 and 2023, at least six insurance firms were placed under receivership due to solvency and inefficiency issues. In 2021 alone, the industry lost over KES 4 billion. As such, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of digital transformation strategy on the competitive advantage of insurance firms in Kenya. The objectives of the study were; to examine the effect of business process automation on the competitive advantage of SANLAM Kenya PLC, to assess the effect of digital infrastructure adoption on the competitive advantage of SANLAM Kenya PLC, to investigate the effect of digital product innovation the competitive advantage of SANLAM Kenya PLC and to evaluate the moderating effect of Industry regulations on the relationship between digital transformation strategy and the competitive advantage of SANLAM Kenya PLC. The study was anchored on the Resource-Based View (RBV) as well as the Dynamic Capabilities Theory, Competitive Advantage Theory and Institutional Theory. The study employed an explanatory research design. The target population included 72 senior managers at SANLAM Kenya PLC. Primary data was collected using a structured questionnaire. A pretest was conducted on 8 respondents from Jubilee Insurance. Data was analysed descriptively using mean and standard deviation, and inferentially using correlation and regression analyses. The findings revealed that 58.4% of the variance in competitive advantage was as result of business process automation (p<0.05), 53.3% was as result of digital infrastructure adoption, and 37.8% was as result of digital product innovation. As such, process automation had the highest effect. However, industry regulations did not significantly moderate the relationship between digital transformation strategy and competitive advantage as the interaction term was not statistically at 5% level of significance (R²=0.782, p=0.993), suggesting that while compliance frameworks exist, they do not substantially alter digital transformation outcomes. The study concludes that digital transformation strategies, anchored in automation, digital infrastructure, and innovation are key drivers of competitive advantage in the insurance sector. These findings align with Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by promoting technological innovation and efficiency. The study recommends that insurance firms intensify investments in digital technologies, promote innovation-driven cultures, and collaborate with regulators to create adaptive digital policies.Daystar Universit
