Little Free Classes in Rural Libraries: The Combination of Online Resources with Offline Learning for Left-behind Children
No full textOnline education can not only connect distance learning resources but also allows students to learn in their own way, addressing the problems of inequitable distribution of educational resources between urban and rural areas. To help a large number of left-behind rural children and to activate library service during the social isolation time, a project called LGS Little Free Class was launched in June, 2020 by a research team from Peking University. Little free class is a complex of online resources and offline learning, creating a good environment for left-behind children to communicate and share emotionally and intellectually. In this project, a rural library is regarded as a learning center, whose librarians organize young readers to learn from online videos and practice offline afterwards. There are various educational resources for little free classes and young patrons can engage in both class practicing and after-class extended reading. By the end of 2022，the project has run for six cycles, with 14 rural libraries, 321 activities and 1702 children involved. Due to the small investment, stable sponsorship and a dedicated professional team, this project is sustainable during and after the pandemic. The 7th cycle of this project is on going in 2023

No full textΟι κατευθυντήριες οδηγίες της IFLA για τη δημόσια πρόσβαση στο Διαδίκτυο στις Βιβλιοθήκες προσφέρουν μία καθοριστική υποστήριξη για την αξία αυτής της πρόσβασης, αλλά και μία πρακτική καθοδήγηση για την αντιμετώπιση των θεμάτων που μπορεί να εγείρει αυτό. Λειτουργούν ως λίστα ελέγχου, καθιερώνοντας αρχές και μοιράζοντας παραδείγματα τα οποία θα πρέπει να χρησιμεύουν ως σημεία αναφοράς για τις βιβλιοθήκες παγκοσμίως. Η πρόσβαση στο Διαδίκτυο προσφέρει μια σημαντική ευκαιρία στις βιβλιοθήκες - και ιδιαίτερα στις δημόσιες βιβλιοθήκες - να επεκτείνουν την προσφορά τους για πρόσβαση σε πληροφορίες, και έτσι την αξία που προσφέρουν στους χρήστες. Έχουν προσελκύσει καινούργιο κοινό στα ιδρύματά μας και έχουν επιτρέψει την ανάπτυξη νέων υπηρεσιών και τύπων υποστήριξης, αξιοποιώντας την υπάρχουσα τεχνογνωσία και αξία των υπαλλήλων βιβλιοθηκών και πληροφοριών. Ωστόσο, οι περιορισμοί στους πόρους, οι πιέσεις από τα μέλη της κοινότητας, οι νόμοι και οι στάσεις των ίδιων των υπαλλήλων των βιβλιοθηκών μπορούν να επηρεάσουν το πόσο μεγάλο μέρος αυτού δυνητικά μπορεί να αξιοποιηθεί. No full textCroatian Library for the Blind has its own podcast since 2018. Guests are authors whose books we prepare in accessible formats, many of them have narrated Daisy audio versions of their own works. Podcast episodes are about opening oneself to another person, connecting authors with their readers and giving a written word access on different levels. Main topics are creative process, invention of characters and situations, reading other authors as an inspiration, observing the world around you and exploring yourself. Some of the guests were colleagues working for many years in the field of production and distribution of accessible literature. Necessity of equal access to knowledge, culture and fun for persons with print disabilities has always been in the background of these conversations.
Our podcast is also one of the gateways where authors can become aware of the readers to whom literature is not easily available. Percentage of titles in accessible formats is still very small compared to the mainstream production.
Podcast episodes are available on the library's YouTube channel, internet page and are distributed to users together with audio magazines

A gentle introduction to using NVivo to analyse qualitative survey data
No full textWhile there are a myriad of tools that can be used to analyse quantitative data, computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) seems less common in the library world. In this presentation, Paul will provide an overview of how one such software package, NVivo, can be used to help analyse the results of qualitative data gathered as part of an online survey. We’ll discuss the challenges of working with and making sense of a large amount of text. We’ll then take a look at how NVivo “understands” qualitative data gathered during an online survey, and how you can quickly code written responses into categories and themes that can be used to help you understand what your patrons are trying to tell you. This will be a show-and-tell presentation, but by the end, participants will have an understanding of how NVivo can be used to make sense of a large number of qualitative survey responses. Participants will understand what is meant to code data, organize those codes into themes, and how to slice and dice this information by the demographic, or classifying, data that is also collected by an online survey tool. This presentation should be of interest to all types of libraries. IFLA in the International Arena before the Second World War: Evidence from the Actes du Comité International des Bibliothèques, and the Digitized League of Nations Archives
No full textDid IFLA play a significant international role before the Second World War? This paper reports on an exploration of two sources of information on IFLA’s international activities during 1928-1939: the proceedings of the annual meetings of the International Library Committee, and files relating to entities of the League of Nations that were concerned with libraries and bibliography. Accessing IFLA’s proceedings, and finding relevant documents in the League of Nations archives turned out to be challenging. This paper is primarily about these sources, but offers some tentative findings. It appears that IFLA was more actively and productively engaged internationally than had thought, engaging particularly with the Committee of Library Experts of the League’s International Committee for Intellectual Cooperation. Both the Actes du Comité international des Bibliothèques and the League of Nations archives hold a treasure trove of data for historians of IFLA, librarianship and documentation, and the international cultural and intellectual milieu during the inter-war period. This resource should be better utilized.

No full textIn order to ensure everyone got to know one another in an engaging environment, there was Zoom Speed Dating, which Helen rotated members to different breakout rooms (in pairs) and each of them shared their name, title, organization, and reasons for joining CPDWL Helen extended an invitation to all Steering Committee (SC) members to join the projects they find most interesting. To streamline the process, Helen created a Google Form where SC members can indicate their project preferences. The deadline for the submission is 12 Oct 2023. Helen also stressed the importance of being an active member in the vibrant CPDWL section. In line with this, Helen reminded SC members the inactive members rules in IFLA. According to the results of the Sep 7 Doodle Poll set up by Helen, the 90-minute Post-Congress
Business Meeting has been scheduled for Oct 6 October, 21:00-22:30 (HKT). In the forthcoming
days, Helen will disseminate the agenda and Zoom link for the upcoming meeting. The Sept 20
social gathering can be viewed as a precursor to the coming business meeting, serving particularly
as a preparatory session, especially for the newly-elected SC member
