Availability and Access to Government Research Data and Freedom of Information in Nigeria: An Evaluation of Selected Government Websites
Government research data (GRD) are required for growth of democratic culture in line with freedom of information (FOI) law in Nigeria. This paper investigated availability and access to government research data in Nigeria to determine the implications in implementation of FOI law in the country. This study adopted webometric analysis approach to examine the websites of 34 selected websites of government key agencies. Findings reveal that only 26.5% of the 34 agencies have GRD in their websites while two of the agencies have no official and functional websites. Also only 10(29.4%) of the 34 agencies have evidence of using their website to address FOI requests and only 1(2.9%) has FOI Department, while only only 3(8.8%) have FOI portal in their websites. The paper concludes that the agencies have not shown enough commitments in implementation of FOI law using their websites
IFLA Committees and the Sustainable Development Goals
There are already strong levels of awareness of the SDGs among IFLA’s volunteer groups, and over half have planned conference sessions on them or used them in action planning. As for individual SDGs, SDG4 (quality education), SDG10 (reducing inequalities) and SDG17 (partnerships for the goals) are most commonly referenced. There remains scope both to raise awareness, and build understanding of how to work with the SDGs in ways that boost the impact of IFLA’s work on wider developmen
International Library Cooperation and Trusted News in Times of War. Ukraine Art Aid Center
This study explores the collaborative efforts of libraries within the Ukraine Art Aid Center network, dedicated to preserving cultural heritage during times of war. Emphasizing the vital role of international library cooperation, we investigate the dissemination of trusted news in the Russo-Ukrainian war. The first section examines Russia's use of (dis-)information as a weapon in the ongoing war. The second section clarifies key terminology distinctions related to disinformation, misinformation, fake news and deep fakes. In the third section, we scrutinize the importance of accurate language and wording to avoid manipulation and disinformation. The fourth section explores strategies to counter disinformation, empowering individuals to make informed decisions. Section five highlights the support provided by international library networks in aiding libraries and societies under attack, focusing on the Ukraine Art Aid Center (Zentrum Kulturgutschutz Ukraine). The sixth section presents curated information services and reliable news sources from Ukraine and exiled Russian media. The seventh section underscores libraries' role as providers of access to reliable information on war crimes and human rights violations
