High Fidelity Web Archiving of News Sites and New Media with Browsertrix
No full textThis paper discusses how Webrecorder’s free and open source browser-based web archiving tools such as Browsertrix can and have been used by libraries and archives to create and provide access to high fidelity web archives of online news sites, social media, digital publications, digital humanities projects, and other historically difficult to preserve forms of online news media. Emphasis is placed on recently developed assistive quality assurance (QA) tools implemented in Browsertrix that allow users to assess the quality of captured content with the assistance of automatically calculated metrics such as screenshot and text comparison between the site as visited by a browser during crawling and its replay from the captured archive. This exciting new development builds on existing features which differentiate Webrecorder’s browser-based crawling from alternative web archiving methods, such as the use of browser profiles to archive material behind log-ins and on personalized social media feeds, ad and cookie blocking features, and a suite of extendable behaviors that drive the browser during capture, allowing for autoscroll as well as automated navigation of certain social media sites. The paper discusses how these features enable librarians to easily and effectively preserve and provide access to news media, referencing several recent collaborations between Webrecorder, libraries, journalists, and others invested in high fidelity archiving of important and often complex online content

IFLA Multi-Level Advocacy Model
No full textThe below table sets out a high-level model for how we think about how we can shape the policy environment to the benefit of libraires. It is based on the idea that different decisions are made and shaped at different levels.
Of course, this will vary according to the policy in question, and often the country or region in question. For example, in Europe or Southeast Asia, many more policies will be determined at the regional level than elsewhere. Policies are also run differently, with some countries deciding on education policies nationally, while others leave them to regions or even local areas.
The table aims to give an idea of how work at the level of IFLA can contribute to wider library advocacy, and in particular to show how we believe that working globally can make it easier to achieve advocacy wins (laws, funding, partnerships) at the local and national levels.
For example, through working with UNESCO to update and agree the UNESCO-IFLA Public Library Manifesto (something that IFLA is uniquely placed to do), we now have a text that can be promoted to national and local governments as a reference for what they should enable public libraries to do (something that national associations and individual libraries alone can do)

No full textThe Committee discussed the latest developments in the Talaria software where 2 students were hired for 6 months to investigate reporting technologies and implementing them in Talaria. The newly registered libraries in Talaria will receive a welcome email, and more developments in progress.A new brochure about RSCVD/Talaria was designed to be used in outreach activities. The research4 Life project was also discussed and Peter Bae is doing more investigation to check the scope of the project. More outreach activities are planned in Santander in September, in India as a webinar, another meeting planned in October, and the ALA Conference in San Diego in June. IFLA and Charity Status - a Briefing
No full textAt its meeting on 15-17 April 2024, the IFLA Governing Board agreed to propose, at our upcoming General Assembly on 20 June 2024, the necessary changes to our Statutes to enable IFLA to formally apply for ANBI status under Dutch law. Acquiring ANBI status would mean that IFLA is more explicitly focused on public benefit and is the Dutch equivalent of a charity.
This briefing provides background to this process, ahead of the publication of the formal convening notice with the text of the amendments. In addition to this briefing and information shared with the convening notice, we will also hold online meetings to hear questions and provide any further details that our members need in deciding how to vote
