A new Examination of the ‘Great Terror’ in Molotschna, 1937–38
Drawing on newly-available arrest, trial, and execution files of the repression of Mennonites in Ukraine from 1937 and 1938, this essay reconstructs a picture of Mennonite life in this context and documents with greater clarity the procedures and experiences of victims and perpetrators from arrest to execution. While much has been written about Stalin’s “Great Terror” of 1937 and 1938, most literature in the West from this period has been limited to selectively leaked and very partial witness accounts, or highly unreliable reports from the Soviet state. This essay presents a new set of detailed stories drawn primarily from the NKVD (The People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs) secret police files and adds to the scholarly examination of these materials. The essay closes with some reflections on the theological category of “martyrdom” and what it means to “be church” in extremely violent, post-Christendom environments.415-458For AODA accommodation, including help with reading this content, please contact [email protected]
Exploring the Impact of COVID-19 on Greeting Behaviours in Education Through a Lens of Relational Engagement
Various impacts of COVID-19 have been explored throughout the literature; however, no research has yet considered the impact of COVID-19 on greetings in education. This paper represents an attempt to address this gap. Using a lens of Relational Engagement, this paper explores the findings of a recent survey (n = 67) that asked how teachers have historically greeted students and how they will go about doing so upon return to a physical classroom space. Findings suggest that COVID-19 has significantly impacted teachers’ beliefs about greetings in the context of education, that teachers’ greeting behaviours are likely to change, and that it is possible if not likely that many teachers may experience various intra- and interpersonal conflicts when they next encounter students face-to-face.30-48For AODA accommodation, including help with reading this content, please contact [email protected]://journals.library.brocku.ca/teachingandlearning/index.php /home/article/view/461/41
Polyphony, Conflicting Ideologies, Dialogism, and the Dialectic Dynamics of Ecclesiastes
Rooted in the rubrics of “Text and Reading,”* 1 this article correlates some of the new advances in the study of Ecclesiastes in the recent past. 2 Employing four intentionally hammered out reading strategies—reading polyphonically; reading “cross the grains”; reading dialectically and reading narrativally, it seeks to demonstrate that the integration of four perspectival readings will enrich the meaning-significance of the book. Emotional Intelligence, Self-Efficacy, and Test Performance
Bibliography: leaves 46-51The objective of this study was to analyze the interrelationships between emotional intelligence,
self-efficacy, and test performance. The study consisted of 91 Ontario residents aged 18 to 48 (the
mean age being 22.78); only 69 of these individuals completed all measures. Participants completed six primary measurement instruments: one measurement of emotional intelligence, three measures of self-efficacy (overall academics, math specific, and literacy specific), a mathematics test, and a literacy test. Four primary hypotheses were tested: (1) there would be a significant relationship between test performance and emotional intelligence; (2) test performance would be related to academic self-efficacy as well as to the respective subject-specific self-efficacy scores; (3) there would be a positive relationship between emotional intelligence and self-efficacy; and (4) those with higher emotional intelligence scores would rate their subject-specific self-efficacy in alignment with their test performance. Emotional intelligence was positively correlated with all three measures of self-efficacy. Literacy test performance was positively correlated with academic self-efficacy, whilst mathematics test performance was positively correlated with math specific self-efficacy. It was also discovered that those with average emotional intelligence scores rated their mathematics specific self-efficacy and academic self-efficacy in alignment with their test performance, whilst those with higher and lower emotional intelligence scores showed greater discrepancies between their self-efficacy and test performance.Thesis (BA Honours) — Tyndale University, 2021.For AODA accommodation, including help with reading this content, please contact [email protected]
Spiritual Direction and Supervision of Spiritual Directors within the Fullness of Trinitarian Life
Bibliography: leaves 232-239In this Research Portfolio, the author articulates a contemplative evocative approach toward Trinitarian Spiritual Formation, from where discernment and ministry flow. This will be explored through three avenues. The first is a spiritual autobiography describing the author’s own spiritual formation in response to the question: How will I know God’s voice? The author’s discernment of vocational call to spiritual direction and supervision will be shared. The second is through the development of a Trinitarian Spiritual Formation Model as informed by Trinitarian Spiritual Formation anchored in Trinitarian theology. In the face of hybrid forms of spiritual direction, this understanding of spiritual formation will be applied to the question: What makes spiritual direction, spiritual direction? The third is through a field research project that attends to the spiritual formation of Tyndale graduate spiritual directors. The project is guided by the question: Does attending to the spiritual formation of directors through a contemplative evocative approach better equip them to discern a calling to the supervision of directors? This research confirms that a contemplative evocative approach toward spiritual formation is helpful for discerning whether or not directors are called to become supervisors.Thesis (D.
