Relationships Between Psychological Birth Order and Perfectionism

    No full text
Bibliography: leaves 69-73Research examining ordinal birth order in relation to various variables has continued for decades with mixed results. However, with the resurgence of an Adlerian conceptualization of birth order, studies have begun producing more meaningful and ecologically valid results. This study explored relationships between birth order and perfectionism using the psychological birth order construct, which conceptualizes birth order in terms of a child’s role in the family, rather than their order in successive births. Specifically, this study tested the hypothesis that psychological birth order would be a better predictor than ordinal birth order of personal and family perfectionism scores. Measures of ordinal birth order, psychological birth order, personal perfectionism, and family perfectionism were distributed to students of Tyndale University and Eastern Nazarene College. The data collected from these measures supported the primary hypothesis, with psychological firstborn scores birth order predicting high personal and family standards for perfection for female participants. On this basis, it can be surmised that the role a child adopts within their family is related to enduring adult traits. However, it is unclear whether children adopt a psychological firstborn role and then exhibit perfectionism or whether innate traits toward or away from perfectionism may drive the psychological role children adopt within their family. Therefore, it may be worthwhile for future studies to consider the extent to which psychological birth order may be determined by innate traits such as perfectionism.Thesis (BA Honours)—Tyndale University, 2022For AODA accommodation, including help with reading this content, please contact [email protected]

Three Dimensions of Spiritual Formation: Grow Deep, Grow High, Grow Wide

    No full text
Bibliography: leaves 188-192.In this research portfolio, the author articulates spiritual formation using a model that involves three dimensions, Grow Deep, Grow High, Grow Wide. This will be explored through three avenues. The first is a spiritual formation model integrating the three dimensions. The model is by no means an ultimate or a perfect model. Spiritual formation is an evolving process, which involves the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. God has a different pathway for everyone of his beloved children. The second avenue is a spiritual autobiography describing the author’s own spiritual formation. It is the synopses of the author’s major life events with reference to the three dimensions. The third avenue is a field research project with a focus on social justice. It intends to answer the question “Can Lectio Divina transform us by shaping our view on social justice?” (Rom. 12:2). The research shows that Lectio Divina was able to shape the views of the participants on social justice, who are senior Asians, and did draw them closer to God. It shows that Lectio Divina was able to help the participants Grow Deep, Grow High, Grow Wide.Thesis (D. Past, Future, and Present: A Ministry Journey Unstuck in Time

    No full text
Bibliography: leaves 177-182In this portfolio the writer explored his ministry journey and identity through the lens of time, looking at his past, future, and present, in order to plot a course forward. In considering his past he examined how his theology of preaching had arisen out of his experiences and the relationship between biography and theology. In considering his future, he explored how the imagination could be used to help lead people and institutions to new horizons. In considering his present he researched how the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted preachers in his denomination, The Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec (CBOQ), and how group story sharing could be used to aid in their healing and recovery. The research portion of this portfolio used a narrative study, the heart of which was a focus group meeting of five pastors, followed up by interviews in which participants contributed to the evaluation of the project. The key finding was that participants endured many common struggles and hardships, including the experience of “preaching into a void,” which described the hardship of speaking without a connection to one’s audience. Sharing their stories helped participants to understand and normalize these experiences, aiding in their healing.Thesis (D.
