    Victims or perpetrators? : the denazification legislation of the allied occupation of Austria (1945-1950).

    iv, 98 leaves.Includes bibliographical references.This is an examination of the denazification legislation during the Allied occupation of Austria between 1945 and 1950. This project looks at the reports of the United States Military Government High Commissioner over the course of five years and how it helped to perpetuate the idea that Austrians were “victims of German aggression” rather than collaborators. There were numerous factors that hindered the progress of denazification within Austria, including the lack of cohesion between the Occupying Powers as well as the historic relationship that Germany and Austria has maintained since the early nineteenth century. I argue that because the postwar legislation created by the Allies, most specifically the Moscow Declaration, allowed Austria to take on a victim identity and therefore, escape most of the blame and responsibility for the crimes of the Third Reich, which in turn, allowed them to found a new national identity separate from Germany based on this victim idea.Pre-1938, Austria's historical background -- 1945, the early occupation period -- 1946, the turning point -- 1946-1947, are Austrians victims? -- 1948, the onset of the Cold War

    iii, 46 leaves : illustrations (some color).Includes bibliographical references: leaves 43-46.Climate change models predict precipitation patterns will shift to periods of long droughts with sparse, high intensity precipitation events in between. It is important to understand how these changes will affect wetlands, one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases. This study investigated the potential production of methane and carbon dioxide from temporary wetland bodies, known as vernal pools, in order to better understand how wetlands will respond to climate change. Our data suggests that vernal pools that undergo more cycles of wetting and drying have the potential to produce more methane and carbon dioxide than pools with stable hydrological conditions. Therefore, a change in wetland wet-dry cycles could further contribute to the positive feedback loop of warming temperatures and climate change through the release of more greenhouse gases. Future research should continue to investigate the crucial role wetland microbes play in climate change

    Python/Flask-based website for text analysis workflow. The Lexomics Research Group develops the Lexos text analysis tool. (This file is a .zip of the software repository as of 01/08/2018; most recent versions can be found on our github site). The role of Lexos is to help readers of literature identify and explore patterns in texts, thereby opening up new questions and new avenues of research. Lexos provides an integrated workflow of pre-processing, analytical, and visualization tools which allow students and scholars of literature to detect and explore patterns in their texts. Lexos functions as an entry-level environment for Lexomics scholarship. The tools are simple enough to be used easily by the casual student, but powerful enough for the advanced professor to use in creating new knowledge and insight. The software is freely available for use online and it may also be downloaded and installed locally for better performance

    vi, 54 leaves.Includes bibliographical references: leaves 44-46.The use of trypan blue was explored as a detection and quantification method for As(III). This procedure represents an improvement of the method described by Narayana et al. (2006) by using the shift in absorbance wavelength of an oxidized biological dye, trypan blue. The new procedure proposed is more sensitive at lower As(III) concentrations, ranging from 1x10⁻⁶ M to 1.4x10⁻⁴ M, and the solutions are more stable when exposed to visible light exposure than they are in the previous method. Apricot samples were tested to ascertain the success of the proposed method in a more complex matrix
