    ii, 117 leaves.Includes bibliographical references: leaves 105-117.This thesis, “Joyce’s Voices: Power and Polyphony in Ulysses” examines James Joyce’s 1922 novel, Ulysses, in its turn of the century Dublin cultural context. Through the analysis of myriad primary resources, the thesis argues that Ulysses exposes, challenges, and subverts the conventions of women’s language in Dublin popular discourse, through its structure as a polyphonic novel, or a text that incorporates multiple voices. In making this claim, the thesis contributes to Ulysses’ scholarship both by emphasizing the importance of primary sources in historicist readings of the novel, and by re-assessing depictions of gender in Joyce’s work.Dueling discourses -- "Who painted the lion?" -- "...yes I said yes I will yes

    38 leaves : illustrations.Includes bibliographical references: leaves 33-38.In the absence of estrogen, metalloestrogens can activate the estrogen receptor and cause breast cancer proliferation in estrogen receptor-positive cells. Methylmercury (MeHg) is a metalloestrogen that is often consumed through fish in the diet and has been shown to lead to the proliferation of MCF-7 cells at a low concentration (1nM) and apoptosis at a high concentration (1uM). N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is an antioxidant that has shown to help prevent neurotoxicity from mercury and increase the rate of excretion of mercury. Therefore, this case explored the effects of NAC on MeHg treated breast cancer cells. NAC ameliorated the proliferative effects caused by MeHg at 1nM

After injury caused by trauma such as a myocardial infarction, human cardiac tissue is unable to heal without scaring. Damage to adult human heart tissue results in replacement of necrotic tissue with stiff scar tissue. In contrast, zebra fish (Danio rerio) have the remarkable ability to regenerate injured heart tissue within the period of a month through complex signaling and response mechanisms involving the dedifferentiation and proliferation of heart cells. It has been observed that regenerating cardiac tissue reacts similarly to that of embryonic tissue where primary cilia are prevalent as control mechanisms for the Hedgehog and Wnt signaling pathways that assist in tissue differentiation, cell organization and mass migration. Recent findings demonstrate that cilia are present on developing heart cells during carcinogenesis. We hypothesize that cilia form in response to injury and that they may play a sensory role, as either mechanical or chemical sensors that resemble cellular antennae, to assist injured tissue through the process of regeneration. This hypothesis was tested through immunofluorescent staining and confocal microscopy to highlight cilia in regenerating tissue. A staining combination of Hoechst, Gamma tubulin and acetylated tubulin antibody were used to define the structure of cilia on 15um sections of cardiac tissue. These stains reinforced our current data to create a time line of cilia proliferation in heart regeneration to provide information of the spatial and temporal location of cilia in regenerating zebrafish cardiac tissue

    iii, 96 leaves : illustrations (some color)Includes bibliographical references: leaves 88-96.Black American female musicians have been at the crossroads between sexism and racism now and in the past. This binary illustrates the constraints of an ideological system of both gender and race roles. My thesis will place into juxtaposition the Black female musicians of the early 20th century and today, and how they have and continue to reshape the prescribed image of female Black Americans in the entertainment industry. I first consider female Black musicians in Jazz Age America. Artists like Josephine Baker and Ada “Bricktop” Smith were highly influential as self-governing icons during the early 20th century. They asserted their agency by departing the US for Europe when faced with racial prejudice in the music scene, and flourished with considerable success; in doing so, they propagated a new perception of female Black musicians. Fast-forward to contemporary times, musicians such as Beyoncé and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot act as influential pop-culture icons to women today, analogous to Black female musicians of the Jazz Age. Through both a historical and contemporary approach, I investigate sexuality, iconography, and public reception as major components in the identity of these musicians. For artists from both time periods, I will consider these components through the use of images and media resources, such as advertisements, newspapers, magazines, interviews, and film to gain a sense of public perception and self-representation. These research methods will enable me to compare similar trends for Black female musicians in pop-culture from one century ago to now. In doing so, I seek to illuminate the major influence and impact of Black female musicians as agents of social change in the liberation from limitations created through oppression, prejudice, and stereotypes
