    The effects of methylmercury on breast cancer progression in zebrafish

    iv, 40 leaves : illustrations (some color).Includes bibliographical references: leaves 33-38.Breast cancer is defined as a group of malignant cells that originate in the breast and have the potential to spread to distant sites in the body, most commonly the liver, lungs, bones and brain. Many factors increase the risk of breast cancer, including but not limited to environmental factors, age, race, gender and obesity. Methylmercury (MeHg) is an environmental metalloestrogen, a type of metal that mimics the activity of estrogen. Previous studies have shown that low concentrations of MeHg cause breast cancer proliferation via the estrogen receptor (ER), but that at high concentrations it causes cell death. However, the long-term effects of MeHg exposure on breast cancer development are unknown and thus worth researching. Many studies have used xenografts in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) to research metastatic capability. By using xenografts of mammalian breast cancer cells in zebrafish, the effects of MeHg in an in vivo system can be studied in regards to tumor progression. It is hypothesized that dietary MeHg treatment of zebrafish transplanted with human breast cancer cells will increase tumor size and the number of tumors and will result in micrometastases. In order to test this hypothesis, zebrafish from Professor Lanni’s lab in the Biochemistry Department at Wheaton College were used. First, fish were injected with fluorescently-labeled MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Fish survival and health as well as tumor growth and metastasis were measured. Once it was known that tumors could be successfully grown, an eight-week experiment was designed in which zebrafish were injected with fluorescently-labeled MCF-7 cells. Every week, fish were imaged under a fluorescent scope; after the eight-week period, fish were sacrificed and dissected for tumors. Although further troubleshooting is necessary, a protocol was successfully developed for the injection and growth of breast tumor cells in zebrafish

    i, 112 leaves.Includes bibliographical references: leaves 111-112.The purpose of this study is to discover how students perceive gender bias and the teacher-student relationships in the math classrooms surveyed, to determine if the teachers involved in the study are aware of any implicit or explicit gender biases, and to ascertain if the teachers who possess the gender biases realize how the biases impact the teacher-student relationships. This pilot study examined the teacher-student relationship, in terms of conflict, contact, closeness, and trust, teacher implicit gender biases, and explicit gender biases. There were three methods of data collection: teacher surveys, student surveys, and teacher focus groups. The data was collected in a middle-class suburban Massachusetts school district in the third and fourth grades. By collecting three different types of data, the researcher was able to examine teacher-student relationships and implicit and explicit gender biases from both the student and the teacher perspectives. Results revealed that explicit biases are less predominant, but that teachers still need to be cautious of implicit biases in math instruction

    Applying international relations theory to contemporary policy : understanding Russia's behaviors and goals in Syria.

    128 leaves : illustrations (some color).My research includes an investigation of the causative factors of Russia's involvement in the Syrian War and Russia's current interests in global politics. In this project, I have employed a synthetic approach that draws from the analytical toolkits of Realist, Liberal and Constructivist international relations theories. My focus is characterizing Russia's intersubjective and normative perceptions, the effects of global institutions and interdependence on Russia's behaviors, and Russia's material capacities with respect to the Middle East and the Syrian conflict. My goal is not simply to apply theory, but to integrate theory analysis into policy recommendations, particularly with regard to US foreign policy relating to Russia
