❖ The emotional response (i.e., SCR) to threat 
was larger in the PTSD than Control group. 
❖ Anticipatory SCR had a smaller inhibitory 
effect on threat-elicited SCR in the PTSD 
than Control group.
❖ A larger anticipatory relative to threat-
elicited SCR was observed in the Control 
than PTSD group.
❖ The relationship between anticipatory and 
threat-related SCR within the Control group 
is consistent with learning theory and 
successful emotional regulation.
❖ Although impending threats often evoke 
emotional responses, predictable threats 
support greater emotion regulation, resulting 
in smaller emotional responses in healthy 
populations.
❖ Anticipatory processes do not regulate the 
threat-elicited emotional response in PTSD 
as well as they do in Controls.

Conclusion
Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability in the United 
States1 and lacks an effective therapeutic treatment. 
Glycosylation is a common post-translational modification 
where a glycan (or saccharide) is added enzymatically to a 
protein. It is critically implicated in multiple physiological and 
pathological processes including central nervous system (CNS) 
disorders. Neuroinflammation is a hallmark of many acute and 
chronic CNS disorders. Recent studies have shown the impact 
of L-fucose (a glycan) in attenuating neuroflammation2. 
However, the impact of fucose treatment on mitochondrial 
dysfunction, a chief contributor to neuroinflammation, has not 
been investigated in the context of stroke.
Our preliminary data shows a dose-dependent inhibition of 
mitochondrial dysfunction due to LPS treatment by L-fucose 
treatment. We aim to use this data to inform the design and 
characterization of immunomodulatory fucosylated  biomaterials to 
modulate the immune cell phenotype towards pro-regenerative 
responses and mitigate neuroinflammation in stroke.

Current Hypothesis: We hypothesize that L-fucose and fucose

Did you know that you can patent plants? Plant patents are one of the three major classes of 
patents, but not just any plant can be patented! Under the 1930 Plant Patent Act, inventors can 
obtain patents for inventing or discovering plants that can be reproduced asexually (35 U.S. Code 
§ 161-164). This includes cultivated sports, mutants, hybrids, and newly found seedlings. 
Asexually propagated plants are plants that are reproduced by means other than from seeds, such 
as cutting, layering, grafting, division, or cloning. Wild (uncultivated) plants that are naturally 
occurring and tubers (like potatoes) are not eligible for plant patents. You can learn more about 
plant patents at the USPTO’s webpage for General Information About 35 U.S.C. 161 Plant Patents 
(https://www.uspto.gov/patents/basics/apply/plant-patent).  
 
The following collection of flora were hand-picked (see what I did there?) from the first 500 
granted US plant patents. Searching for plant patents is easy once you learn how – all plant 
patents begin with “USPP” followed by their number in order of when they were granted. Because 
the Plant Patent Act wasn’t signed into law by President Herbert Hoover until May 23, 1930, the 
earliest plant patent, US PP 1, was filed on August 6 of that year and granted about a year later 
on August 18, 1931! Despite the fact that the first 500 US plant patents were examined for prime 
colorability, the last plant patent in this collection, US PP 499, was granted only 12 years later in 
1942. That’s a whole lot of plants!

Senator Britt, NIH Director Bhattacharya visit UAB
Sen. Katie Britt welcomed National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya, M.D.,
Ph.D., to UAB for a day-long visit to engage with UAB leaders and researchers. At an on-
campus presentation with more than 2,100 faculty and staff viewing virtually or in-person,
Bhattacharya shared his vision for the NIH, expressed support for UAB research and
answered questions. President Watts thanked Britt for her unwavering support of UAB,
biomedical research and the NIH, and Britt shared positive results of her advocacy efforts,
including promising budget appropriations news. Watch the full presentation.
Crenshaw to serve as VP for
Administration
UAB Chief Risk and Compliance Officer Katie
Crenshaw will serve as vice president for
Administration, effective Sept. 1. Crenshaw has
been serving in the role in an interim capacity
since December 2024.
