Current Challenges:
• Traditional water treatment materials are 
inefficient and cannot meet the demand of the 
current pollution with effective removal. 
• As more than 40% of the Earth’s total water is 
severely contaminated.1
• There is no replacement for Earth’s fresh 
water, so it is important to find ways to keep 
what we have clean 
Objective: 
• Fabricate polylactic acid/titanium dioxide 
(PLA)/TiO2) and alginate/TiO2 (AG/TiO2) 
nanocomposites by a green and mild 
approach for pollutant removal from water
Strategy:
• Used water-oil emulsion for the growth of 
TiO2 from Ti-alkoxide.2,3
• Precipitated alginate or PLA in CaCl2 or 
PVA, respectively
• Methylene Blue (MB) as a model pollutant
Optical Microscope imaging of PLA/TiO2:
• The PLA/TiO2 nanocomposite microparticles have 
irregular shape with distortion compared to pure PLA
• Their sizes range from 16-40 μm, with an average of 
30 μm
Process:
• Mixed set amount nanocomposites with dye
• Set under UV light for varying lengths of time(1-3 
hours)
• Took the absorbance of each sample
• Found the maximum absorbance value at ~664 nm
• Used maximum absorbance to find concentration 
Optical Images of AG/TiO2:
• Mostly have a round, spherical shape
• Some were elongated oval shapes
• Their sizes ranged from 1.8-3 mm, 
with an average of 2.6 mm
Main Findings:
• Maximum pollutant removal for AG/TiO2 
was 50.6% after 3 hours of exposure.
• Maximum removal for PLA/TiO2 was 
98.9% after 5 days under visible light.
• Observed that alginate was more effective 
across studies with shorter time and UV 
light vs. the 5-day study with visible light.
• PLA/TiO2 was more effective after 5 days 
under visible light

•  Patients within the expedited group present with greater percentages of High-Risk HPV 
such as HPV16+ & HPV18+oHR as well as significantly higher percentages of High-Risk 
cytological abnormalities. 
• When both High-Risk HPV and cytological abnormalities are present the risk of higher-
stage cervical pre cancer such as CIN3 developing into cervical cancer is concerning. 
• By putting the patients at the highest risk of developing cervical pre-cancer into 
expedited treatment the advancement into cervical cancer is halted.

Alabama persistently maintains a high cervical cancer mortality rate. Expedited treatment may 
decrease the rate of cervical cancer in patients with limited compliance. The purpose of this 
study is to analyze patients within a 5-year time frame to determine if current guidelines are 
addressing the need for expedited treatment for higher risk patients.

A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 302 patients within the last 5 years and separated 
after being treated with a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) with and without 
expedited treatment. After the separate groups were formed factors evaluated included race, 
average age at treatment, insurance information, smoking history, HPV vaccination status, HPV 
infection, Pap-Smear Results, LEEP Results, Time from Pap-Smear to LEEP, and Time from 
colposcopy to LEEP. 
After all information was gathered tests such as Fisher Exact Test, Welch Two Sample T Test, & 
Pearson's Chi-Squared Test were done to assess differences between groups.​

• 275 Patients were found to have not received expedited treatment regarding their LEEP 
procedure while 27 patients received expedited treatment. 
• The majority of patients were Hispanic (39%). 
• Both patient groups were similar in terms age at the time of treatment (35 vs 38). 
• The expedited group had a small higher percentage when it came to receiving a partial or full 
vaccine.  (7.6% vs 3.7%).

• The expedited group had both a greater amount of HPV16 +(1.5% vs 7.4%) and 
HPV18+oHR (2.2% vs 7.4%) (p < 0.05).
• Treatment Time regrading Pap-Smear to LEEP for the expedited group was significantly less 
than the non expedited group Median Q1-Q3 (50-72 Days vs 102-184 Days) (p < 0.05).
• Expedited treatment group were only found with High-Risk Cytological Abnormalities 
    (ASC-H & HSIL).
• 70% of all expedited patients were found with CIN3 during their LEEP procedures.
