Introduction to Song’s “Persuasion vs. Coercion or Persuasion and Coercion”

    Get PDF
I am happy to have been invited to add some brief introductory comments to the wonderful paper by Jiying Song and the essay by Robert K. Greenleaf which is included. To start, Song’s paper is a powerful engagement of Robert K. Greenleaf’s essay, “Overcome Evil with Good,” which appeared in the May 15, 1977 edition of Friends Journal. While Greenleaf addressed in several of his writings the themes of persuasion, manipulation, and coercion, and contrasted Mahatma Gandhi’s and John Woolman’s approaches to change, nowhere did he do so as fully and passionately as he did in the original Friends Journal essay, which Jiying has included here as part of her analysis

The Boland Hall Fire: A Case Study on Campus Crisis and the Role of Servant-Leadership in Institutional Healing

    Get PDF
The application of servant-leadership in crisis response within Catholic higher education has not been explored. Thus, this essay analyzes the Boland Hall Fire at Seton Hall University to further understand the nuances of servant-leadership in times of crises, and to examine how the principles of servant-leadership can play and cultivate institution-wide healing. By studying artifacts that display how Seton Hall University’s President, administration, and students displayed servant-leadership, this case study emphasizes the role of servant-leadership as an advantagous tool for Catholic higher education leaders in times of crisis

Climate Change Discourse and its Dangerous Liabilities

    Get PDF
In this talk, Dr. Crist will differentiate between the reality of climate change and the discourse of climate change defined as the dominant way of framing it. The two are related but not coextensive. While the reality of climate change warrants immediate remedial response, the discourse of climate change is swerving humanity away from the right view and action with respect to climate change and the broader socio-ecological crisis we are steeped in. Crist contends that the discourse of climate change is actually digging the deadly hole we are in even deeper. Crist suggests ditching the dominant discourse of climate change without losing sight of the reality and dangers of climate change to human and nonhuman worlds alike. About the speaker: Eileen Crist taught in the Department of Science, Technology, and Society at Virginia Tech for 22years, retiring in 2020. Her work focuses on the biodiversity crisis and destruction of wild places, pathways to halt these trends, and ways forward toward creating an ecological civilization. She is co-editor of a number of books, including Keeping the Wild (2014) and Protecting the Wild (2015). She has authored and coauthored numerous academic papers as well as popular writings, and is Associate Editor of the online journal The Ecological Citizen and blogger for Earth Tongues. Her most recent book, Abundant Earth: Toward an Ecological Civilization, was published by University of Chicago Press in 2019.
