The Surveys of Strength initiative is intended to give our GU students, staff, and faculty the space to express themselves and draw attention to isolating experiences regarding cancer, sexual assault, disability, and immigration. Each section of this collection will begin with a statistical report and then responses to questions that were posed in each survey. These responses should remind us that we are part of a larger community, not only within Gonzaga but within the human race as well

Imposter Syndrome Among Medical Professionals

Research Question: What are the effects of imposter syndrome on medical professionals?
Background 
Over the course of the semester, we researched 
how imposter syndrome impacts medical 
professionals. Imposter Syndrome is "an inability 
to internalize success” leading “to a sense of 
fraudulence”.
Imposter syndrome can lead to nursing burnout, 
anxiety, depression, and job dissatisfaction.  
Feelings of imposter syndrome are heightened in 
new-to-practice nurses that felt unprepared to 
transition to practice.
Studies have shown that personalized coaching 
and mentorship can reduce feelings of imposter 
syndrome and emotional exhaustion in medical 
professionals.
Intervention
• Universal Accredited Nursing Residency 
Programs
– Guidelines for the American Nurses 
Credentialing Center to use when evaluating 
residency programs
• All hospitals will be required to provide a 
residency program following universal 
guidelines 
• These programs will be required for all new 
graduation nurses
• Aspects of an ideal residency program
– Practical skill development
– Personalized learning
– Didactic learning element
– Role expectations and safety precautions
– Long-term coping strategies
– Strong preceptor mentorship
Implementation
•12-month residency program
• At least 6 months with a nurse mentor
• Broad nursing practical and didactic 
education for first 6 months
• Practice skills that cannot be done in nursing 
school: blood administration, placing FHR 
monitors, administering controlled 
substances, time management
• Specialty/unit specific didactic and 
practical training for last 6 months
• Medical Spanish, EKG reading, hospital 
specific equipment
• Program will be funded by the hospitals
• Hiring first year nurses poses implications to 
patient safety and overall quality of care
•  A decrease in clinical burnout among new grad 
nurses
• Better job satisfaction for new grad nurses
• Increase in nursing job retention
• Thus, supporting the hospital and 
encouraging the hospitals to continue funding 
these residency programs
•  An increase in the quality care that nurses 
provide to their patients.

Combat Exposure’s Influence on PTSD and Substance Abuse in Veterans

Background 
Among recent Afghanistan and Iraq veterans, 63% 
diagnosed with substance use disorders (SUDs) also 
met criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder 
(PTSD). Nearly 1 in 3 veterans who have 
experienced combat develop PTSD, and among 
those, SUDs are up to three times more likely to 
occur compared to the general population. 
Veterans diagnosed with SUDs are often diagnosed 
with cooccuring mental health disorders, suicide 
rates, and increased rates of himelessness. 
Our project is focused on the substance abuse that 
comes from PTSD related to combat exposure. 
When talking about EBP our goal is to find a long 
term solution by providing them with effective tools to 
heal. 
PEO Research Question 
How does combat exposure influence the 
development of PTSD and substance abuse 
in veterans? 
Intervention and Implementation Proposal 
● A 12-week program with support groups for veterans that specifically addresses trauma 
could be developed in order to address their PTSD and substance abuse 
● Existing medical trainings aren’t specifically targeted towards care of veterans, but with the focus 
of this program, nurses could receive specialized training that would equip them with skills to 
provide trauma-informed care, recognize signs of PTSD and substance abuse, and foster 
supportive environments that promote veteran’s mental health and recovery. 
● These groups would provide a safe, non-judgmental space where veterans can discuss their 
experiences with others and brainstorm healthy coping strategies 
● As part of a 12-week program, veterans would come together at a local community center or 
veterans’ hospital for weekly sessions that highlight understanding their struggles and developing 
healthy resolutions 
● The goal of the program would be to reduce veterans’ emotional distress, improve daily 
functioning, encourage psychological healing, and provide methods to get help for substance 
abuse 
● Outside of group sessions, these programs could highlight the use of online platforms like 
Headspace and PTSD Coach 
○ Headspace offers mental health and mindfulness exercises to help veterans manage any 
stress and anxiety outside of the group sessions 
○ PTSD Coach could be used to provide additional support and education on coping 
mechanisms because this app was developed by the VA’s National Center for PTSD for 
veterans struggling  with their mental health 
Expected Outcomes 
Improvement in nursing practice regarding how 
patients are talked to, traumas are addressed, and 
accommodations in a hospital/clinic surrounding 
substance abuse behaviors and mental health 
outcomes. 
Nurses are able to find and educate on alternative 
coping strategies that are effective in long term 
practice like mindfulness practices, relaxation 
techniques, and therapies 
Using nursing in therapy groups to create a deeper 
sense of community and cohesive care that helps 
support a small population in order to reduce the rates 
of suicide and provide rescources for those 
experiencing homelessness.
