Learners’ Perceptions of Servant-Leadership in Classrooms

    Get PDF
The term servant-leadership was coined by Robert Greenleaf (1970) through his collection of essays titled The Servant as Leader. His message is that the best leader is first a servant. Beazley (2003) described servant-leadership as an art, a calling, a way of being, and a philosophy of life. Hence, it is not modern theory of leadership and management technique but rather the process of serving, and the development of the led, who are being served. Omoh (2007) considered that the results of servant-leadership include follower-empowerment as well as mutual trust and collaboration between the servant-leader and the led. More specifically, Hays (2008) argued that the applications of servant-leadership principles can make a profound difference on the impact of learning and in the learning experience of both students and teachers (p.113)

The Mentoring Experiences of Four Missouri Teachers of the Year Through the Lens of Servant-Leadership Characteristics

Teachers are facing overwhelming pressure in today s classrooms with core standards, and high-stakes testing (Grissom, Nicholson-Crotty, & Harrington, 2014; Oliver, 2009; Phillips, 2015) resulting in many new teachers decision not to continue in the profession (Hancock & Scherff, 2010). Across the country, 23% of teachers with one to three years teaching experience either left the teaching profession or moved to another school district (Keigher & Cross, 2010)

Winter is Changing: Trophic Interactions Under Altered Snow Regimes

    Get PDF
Shifts in abiotic conditions can strongly influence not only the demography, ecology, and evolution of individual species, but also the networks of interactions that structure communities and ecosystems. Though many studies have addressed how changes in mean temperature or rainfall patterns will affect ecosystems, there has been far less attention on the impact of changing snow regimes. As climate change alters the abundance and persistence of snowpack in temperate and polar regions of the globe, novel reductions or accumulations of snow may dramatically impact the nature of interactions between organisms in these ecosystems. In this review, we focus on four major mechanisms by which snow cover affects food webs, by (1) generating an insulated subniveal environment, (2) providing a physical or visual refuge from consumption, (3) affecting movement of animals across landscapes, and (4) driving phenology. For each of these mechanisms, we explore examples of observational and experimental studies that have addressed the role of changing snow conditions on food web processes. Then we highlight open questions regarding the influence of changing snow cover on trophic interactions, and suggest types of experiments and tools that could advance this field of research. We conclude that more experimental work is needed to understand the net effects of altered snow cover on food webs, particularly because snow cover may simultaneously affect multiple trophic levels through different mechanisms

The Most Economical Common Dissection of a Square and Equilateral Triangle

    No full text
The Wallace-Bolyai-Gerwien theorem states any polygon can be decomposed into a fnite number of polygonal pieces that can be translated and rotated to form any polygon of equal area. The theorem was proved in the early 19th century. The mini-mum number of pieces necessary to form these common dissections remains an open question. In 1905, Henry Dudney demonstrated a four-piece common dissection be-tween a square and equilateral triangle. We investigate the possible existence of a three-piece common dissection. Specifcally we conjecture that there does not exist a three-piece common dissection using only convex polygons

Measurement Agreement Between a Newly Developed Sensing Insole and Traditional Laboratory-Based Method for Footstrike Pattern Detection in Runners

    Get PDF
This study introduced a novel but simple method to continuously measure footstrike patterns in runners using inexpensive force sensors. Two force sensing resistors were firmly affixed at the heel and second toe of both insoles to collect the time signal of foot contact. A total of 109 healthy young adults (42 males and 67 females) were recruited in this study. They ran on an instrumented treadmill at 0°, +10°, and -10° inclinations and attempted rearfoot, midfoot, and forefoot landings using real time visual biofeedback. Intra-step strike index and onset time difference between two force sensors were measured and analyzed with univariate linear regression. We analyzed 25,655 footfalls and found that onset time difference between two sensors explained 80–84% of variation in the prediction model of strike index (R-squared = 0.799–0.836, p\u3c0.001). However, the time windows to detect footstrike patterns on different surface inclinations were not consistent. These findings may allow laboratory-based gait retraining to be implemented in natural running environments to aid in both injury prevention and performance enhancement

Corpus of News on the Web data for November 2017. The TAR folder contains linguistic data in three formats: Database: This is the format allows for the most robust searches and allows for powerful JOINs across corpus, lexicon, and source tables but requires knowledge of SQL. See Full-text corpus data for more information on how to use the database format. Linear Text: This format provides a textID for each text, and then the entire text on the same line. In this format, words are not annotated for part of speech or lemma. In addition, contracted words like can\u27t are separated into two parts (ca n\u27t) and punctuation is separated from words (eye level . As her). Word, Lemma, Part of Speech: Texts are separated by a line with ## and the textID

Sticky Like Butter: The Language Surrounding Corporate Social Responsibility Is Uninspiring and Therefore Not Embraced

    Get PDF
The research discussed in this article began with an interest in examining the relationship between servant-leadership and social responsibility. In my time both owning and working within companies, I had become familiar with different perspectives and opinions on social responsibility, and had witnessed first-hand the struggles that organizations often experience in attempting to carry out effective strategies

Forgiveness and Reconciliation as an Organizational Leadership Competency Within Transitional Justice Instruments

    Get PDF
The socio-cultural and ethnic trauma experienced by victims of human rights violations impact not only post reconstruction activities but also stable governance initiatives as transitional leaders foster national reconciliation in a post conflict environment. Scholars note that demands upon transitional leaders range from macroeconomic stabilization and generation of employment to anti-corruption and sustainability of markets; at the same time, physical and territorial security call for accountability and justice for perpetrators under the rule of law in the aftermath of human rights violations committed during conflict (Oola, 2015; Sammi, 2010; Saunders, 2011). Yet, if forgiveness and reconciliation are not included as a key ingredient, long term peace and stability are uncertainties
