Development planning and integration of migration in the city of uMhlathuze, South Africa
Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Zululand, South Africa [2024].Migration, as a global phenomenon, affects municipalities not only in South Africa but across the globe. Therefore, it must be factored into municipal policy, planning and budget processes. Against this backdrop, this study investigated the extent to which municipal development planning integrated migration at uMhlathuze municipality, Northeast of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. The objectives of the study were to (a) identify the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders involved in sustainable development planning at a municipal level, (b) analyse migration trends within the municipality since 2001, (c) assess the inclusion of migration in sustainable development planning in the municipality, and (d) propose a comprehensive framework for migration and sustainable development planning in the municipality. The study employed the interpretivist research paradigm because it was deemed the most suitable for assisting the researcher in delving into the process of municipal planning. In light of this, the study adopted a qualitative research approach in the form of interviews with the key stakeholders and an extensive document review of municipal strategic plans. The findings of the study indicated that despite the number of migrants increasing in the municipality and the various stakeholders involved, migration was not integrated into municipal development planning. Reasons for this exclusion include the negative attitudes and perspectives of stakeholders towards migration. Some stakeholders believed that the management and planning for migration is not the competence of the local government but that of provincial and national governments. Another reason was the unavailability of up-to-date data about the migrant population mostly undocumented ones. Overall, the municipality has displayed a blinkered attitude towards the importance of integrating migration into existing or new municipal development plans for many years which has and continues to yield undesired consequences like social fragmentation, economic exclusion, and poor planning. Based on these findings, the study proposed a framework to assist in addressing migration-related issues while enhancing the positive contribution of migration to sustainable development in local municipalities. This framework describes various strategies that municipalities could implement to ensure that migrants are integrated into development planning as well as the expected outcomes. Some of the proposed strategies include the provision of educational initiatives, a multi-governmental approach to migration management and strengthening communication mechanisms among the stakeholders involved in municipal development planning. This study suggested that without the integration of migration into municipal planning, sustainable development goals cannot be achieved. Based on all this, the contribution of the study to the discipline of Geography is a different perspective and narrowing of the gap in the literature about the migration-sustainable development nexus at the municipal level where there was a dearth.

An exploratory study on crime prevention initiatives at a selected rural University in South Africa
Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree Master of Criminology in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Zululand, South Africa [2024].Ensuring safety on university campuses is a matter of utmost importance, with the need for effective crime prevention measures becoming increasingly evident. Studies indicate that the surge in campus crime is a complex issue, influenced by a combination of social, environmental, and institutional factors. Universities, often serving as microcosms of society, are susceptible to the impact of societal norms on crime rates and responses. Therefore, collaboration among stakeholders emerges as a crucial element in addressing this issue, alongside implementing comprehensive campus safety measures such as visible police and security cameras. The adopted Situational Crime Prevention framework stresses opportunity-reducing measures that are directed at highly specific forms of crime by manipulating the environment to make crime more difficult to commit. If these preventative measures are ineffective, they create an unsettling campus atmosphere. This research aimed to explore crime prevention initiatives at the University of Zululand to identify best practices that can be adopted to improve the situation. The research employed a qualitative methodology, utilising semi-structured interviews to collect data from 12 key informant participants who were selected employing a purposive sample technique. To obtain additional perspectives from the viewpoint of the students regarding current prevention initiatives and their effectiveness at the University of Zululand, the snowballing sample technique was employed as well in selecting participants for two focus-group discussions. Data analysis was conducted utilising thematic analysis. The main findings of the study indicated that among other crimes, theft; rape; physical and verbal assaults, and abuse of alcohol and drugs were identified as the most common crimes at the University of Zululand, KwaDlangezwa campus. The research indicates that there are currently implemented crime prevention initiatives; however, several challenges impede their successful implementation, such as inadequate security personnel training, security infrastructure shortcomings, staff involvement in criminal activities, ineffective security measures, and miscommunication between departments. In light of these findings, it was recommended that current crime prevention initiatives be evaluated to identify areas of improvement and generate a holistic approach that will address the institution's unique needs
Influence of teacher-principal conflict management strategies on teachers' self-efficacy in rural primary schools in the Dzindi Circuit
Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Education in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Education in the Department of Foundations and Management at the University of Zululand, South Africa [2024].English
This study investigates the influence of teacher-principal conflict management strategies on teachers’ self-efficacy in rural primary schools within the Dzindi Circuit. Data in this constructivist study was collected through face-to-face interviews. The study utilized a homogeneous purposive sampling procedure to ensure the selection of participants with shared characteristics that are highly relevant to the research focus. Grounded in transformational leadership theory and the Thomas-Kilmann conflict management model, the study examines how principals’ approaches to resolving conflicts impact teachers’ confidence, motivation, and professional competence. The research identifies key themes, including the role of respectful communication, collaboration, and proactive conflict resolution strategies. Findings reveal that conflict management styles characterized by respect, empathy, and inclusivity significantly enhance teachers’ self-efficacy, while authoritarian or avoidant strategies contribute to emotional exhaustion, diminished morale, and a decline in teaching performance. The study also highlights the broader implications of unresolved conflicts on school climate and learner outcomes, emphasizing the need for emotionally aware and collaborative leadership practices. Based on the results, the Teacher-Principal Conflict Management and Teacher Self-Efficacy Enhancement Model (TPCM-TSEE Model) was developed. This model offers a structured framework for principals to address conflicts constructively, promoting a positive school environment and empowering teachers to achieve educational goals. The findings underscore the importance of professional development for principals in conflict resolution and emotional intelligence, as well as workshops for teachers to foster a collaborative school culture. These recommendations aim to enhance both teacher efficacy and the overall quality of education in rural schools.Tshivenda: Pfufhifhadzo

Lived experiences of single teenage mothers at KwaMsane Township, KwaZulu-Natal
Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in the Department of Social Work at the University of Zululand, South Africa [2024].In an era marked by the complex challenges confronting young people, addressing
teenage pregnancy requires a comprehensive multi-sectoral response that empowers and supports adolescents on multiple fronts. The qualitative study’s objectives were to explore the psychosocial experiences of single teenage mothers from northern KwaZulu-Natal, seeking to understand their experience of absent fathers in the parental relationship, identify sources of support, and provide recommendations for multiple sectors. Thirteen participants, sampled by snowball sampling, participated in face-to-face interviews, and two focus group discussions that were manually coded and thematically analysed. Empowerment theory was used as an analytic framework. The study’s findings revealed that single teenage mothers experience psychosocial challenges, social rejection, disrupted life plans, academic difficulties, financial problems, father absenteeism, and poor mental health. This highlights several key areas which need multi-sectoral interventions to address teenage pregnancy. Recommendations include developing participatory strategies that promote positive father involvement, establishing support systems for psychosocial support for teenage mothers, and fostering whole community-based initiatives to promote awareness and dialogue on teenage pregnancy
Euclidean geometry problem-solving using the geometer’s sketchpad: a focus on national certificate vocational level 4 students
Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Education in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education in the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education at the University of Zululand, South Africa [2025].The purpose of this study was to examine how the use of the Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP) can help National Certificate Vocational (NCV) level 4 students with problem solving in geometry. NCV level 4 students continually underperform in Euclidean geometry since they perceive it as a difficult section of mathematics. As a result, the researcher saw the need to study the use of GSP in the teaching of geometry. Problem solving is not only a goal in mathematics, but also important in real life. This study aimed to answer the three research questions of how NCV level 4 students use GSP in solving Euclidean geometry problems, what are the qualitative differences that the use of GSP makes in the ways in which NCV level 4 students solve problems in Euclidean geometry, and what are NCV level 4 student’s’ perceptions on the use of GSP in learning Euclidean geometry.
The study is guided by the technological pedagogical content knowledge framework, which is useful for thinking, analysing, and evaluating what teachers need to know in order to integrate technology into their classrooms. It employed a qualitative research approach for the researcher to learn about NCV level 4 students’ ideas and feelings regarding the use of GSP to solve Euclidean geometry. Thus, students were purposively selected to help the researcher to best answer the research questions. This study relied on multiple forms of data generation, namely classroom observations, focus group interviews, and document analysis. As a result, the researcher was able to identify the themes and the sub-themes of the research. The findings of the study were discussed in consideration of the available literature and research questions. It was found that the students display a positive attitude towards using the GSP in solving the Euclidean geometry. Students constructed many diagrams and measured them with ease. They mentioned that they saw GSP as a visualisation and a proble solving tool. They also saw GSP as a practical tool to help them confirm theorems. The GSP was seen to elicit an apparent love of Euclidean geometry as students were motivated and saw it as an engaging tool
Risk management as a strategic tool for sustainable service delivery in King Cetshwayo District Municipalities
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy on Public Administration in the Department of Business Management at the University of Zululand, South Africa [2024].After nearly 30 years of democracy, South Africa grapples with the persistent challenge of ensuring the sustainable provision of basic services to its citizens. In light of this challenge, the study aimed to explore the application and effectiveness of risk management as a tool for sustainable service delivery in the Mthonjaneni, uMlalazi, uMfolozi, uMhlathuze and Nkandla local municipalities under the King Cetshwayo District Municipality.
The study used a case study designed with a qualitative research approach. A sample of 22 participants was selected from among a population of local government political leadership and senior local government practitioners who are responsible for risk management, internal audit services and service delivery. Purposive sampling was used to draw this sample and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from them. Data were analysed using thematic analysis on ATLAS.ti.
The findings indicated a failure among municipalities to effectively apply strategic risk management as a tool to support sustainable service delivery. The mere existence of risk management systems and practices in the municipalities did not translate into efficient and effective strategic risk management due to existing challenges and dynamics. Notably, risk management and sustainable service delivery were found to be misaligned, attributed to poor politician-administrator interactions, the absence of risk management policies, and fragmented planning. Municipalities encountered numerous challenges in implementing risk management strategies, including a lack of adequate funding, skills deficits, low leadership commitment, and poor strategic capabilities.
The study identified fiscal risks as a common challenge significantly impacting municipalities' abilities to provide sustainable services. In conditions marked by poor revenue generation and high-cost demands, fiscal risk management emerged as a critical activity capable of reducing budgetary gaps. However, the research highlighted hindrances to fiscal risk management, including skills shortages and leadership factors.
In view of these findings, the study recommended several measures, including internal audit teams playing consultative roles in strategic risk management, enhancing risk training and awareness among service delivery stakeholders, increasing funding support to oversight departments, attracting and retaining audit and risk management skills, and fostering a risk management culture, among other initiatives
Assessment of records management trustworthiness and authenticity to support the auditing process at Umgungundlovu District Municipality in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa
Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts on Information Science in the Department of Information Studies at the University of Zululand, South Africa [2024].This study assesses trustworthiness and authenticity of records to support the auditing process at uMgungundlovu District Municipality. There have been a number of negative opinions from the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) resulting from inadequate records management in some public sector organisations. In conducting this, the study examined the types of records required for auditing at uMgungundlovu District Municipality, the contribution of records trustworthiness and authenticity to auditing, policies, procedures and guidelines in place for maintaining the authenticity of records, challenges hindering records authenticity and trustworthiness and recommendations to the management, on recordkeeping issue to support auditors at uMgungundlovu District Municipality. The study used a qualitative approach and adopted an interpretive paradigm. Sixteen records keepers were part of the data collection for this study, and they were selected using purposive sampling. Google Forms, observation and document analysis were also used as data collection instruments, while thematic analysis was used for data analysis.
Despite the existence of records management policies, procedures and guidelines, the study found that proper records management is not sufficiently prioritised at the uMgungundlovu District Municipality, even though a lot of work is required to perform proper records management. This was demonstrated by the absence of formal training for the staff on records management skills, the nonexistence of risk registers, and the lack of evidence which would lead to disclaimer of opinion from the Auditor-General of South Africa at uMgungundlovu District Municipality. The uMgungundlovu District Municipality produces electronic records, paper records, audio-visual records, and micrographic records, which are kept in different divisions. Records are classified by means of a file system that consists of numbers and alphabets at uMgungundlovu District Municipality. The issues of loss of information, unauthorised access, and insecurity of records are still prevalent at uMgungundlovu District Municipality. The study recommends that records management be considered a core component for clean and qualified audits at uMgungundlovu District Municipality, including the creation of risk registers to mitigate potential disasters and tempering the records, as well as the provision of formal records management training for staff
Efficacy of educational assistants’ programme in support of teachers in rural schools at uThukela district
Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Education in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education in the Department of Educational Foundations and Management at the University of Zululand, South Africa [2024].The role of the educational assistants (EAs) was to support the teacher in preparing and delivering the lesson, making necessary adaptations to meet the needs of the learners. South African teachers were overburdened in the classroom. The need for government intervention stemmed from implementing crucial programmes such as the Educational Assistants’ Programme. However, many hindrances were detected during the programme. The history of South Africa had produced inequality in education; therefore, this had created variation in the schooling system. Therefore, the existing barriers involved understaffing, creating poor working conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational assistants’ programme implemented by the South African government in addressing the challenges teachers and learners faced in South African schools. The study drew from concerns about educational assistance programmes. The study sought to delve deeper into exploring the structural and functional limitations of the Educational Assistants’ programme. The qualitative research was used within an interpretive paradigm that was context-dependent. There was also the use of in-depth interviews for data collection, and for the data analysis, a thematic method was used. The study findings included a variation of ideas on the EAs programme. The study’s recommendations suggested that the classroom teacher should have been the primary instructor for all learners, including those with disabilities
Public satisfation on municipality and response to service delivery
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Administration in the Department of Public Administration at the University of Zululand, South Africa [2024].ENGLISH VERSION
Local government officials are responsible for making municipalities the most visible levels of government. However, if planned services are not delivered, municipal employees can become targets of citizen aggression due to their proximity to the angry public and their association with public service challenges. Given this close relationship between local government employees and the community, it became necessary to examine the connections between external workplace aggression initiated by the public and employee behaviour. Despite the existing literature, there is a gap in understanding how community aggression originating from public anger with municipalities affected municipal officials. This research focused on the extent to which external workplace aggression influences prosocial and proactive behaviour of Mtubatuba Municipality employees. The study used social exchange theory as its theoretical framework to investigate this because provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the reciprocal relationships between individuals and their environment, particularly in the context of workplace interactions.
The study adopted a convergent parallel mixed method design, which involves independently collecting and evaluating both quantitative and qualitative data and subsequently comparing and integrating the findings. Given this research approach, pragmatism was deemed suitable philosophical orientation for the study. The study engaged 132 participants through questionnaires and conducted in-depth interviews with five key informants. Quantitative data analysis employed the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), while a content analysis approach was applied to the qualitative data. Rigorous data quality control was upheld to ensure the reliability and validity of the quantitative data collection instrument and the trustworthiness of the qualitative research instrument. Structural equation model (SEM) was used to test research hypotheses regarding the influences of external workplace aggression on prosocial and proactive work behaviour of municipal employees.
The research findings reveal that external workplace aggression is a prevalent experience among the participants, encompassing both psychological and physical forms of aggression. Some employees had experienced mild forms of aggression, such as being rudely treated or yelled at. Others reported experiencing more severe forms of aggression, such as being threatened with a weapon or physically assaulted. Notably, external workplace aggression exhibits a negative correlation (-0.342**) with prosocial workplace behaviour, implying that higher levels of external workplace aggression are associated with reduced levels of prosocial work behaviour. Additionally, there is a moderately negative relationship (-0.345**) between proactive work behaviour and external workplace aggression, suggesting that increased levels of external workplace aggression correspond to decreased proactive workplace behaviour. The findings also highlight the absence of mechanisms to support employees when facing external workplace aggression, thus explaining the reason behind the absence of reported external workplace aggression.
The study underscores the need for the municipality to take proactive measures to mitigate external workplace aggression. This includes implementing security measures and training employees on effectively handling confrontations with aggressive customers or clients. The study also recommends continued security protection for senior officials who are more likely to encounter external workplace aggression compared to other municipal staff members. It is crucial for the municipality to acknowledge the detrimental impact of external workplace aggression on prosocial and proactive behaviour and establish a reporting mechanism for employees to address encounters with external workplace aggression effectively.OKUHUNYUSHWE NGOLIMI LWESIZULU

Teamwork on development of employment.
A research project has been submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Commerce to the Department of Business Management in the Faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law at the University of Zululand, South Africa. For organizations to improve performance, teamwork is often cited as important across all departments. However, according to Cheruvelil, Sorrono, Weathers, Hanson, Goring, Filstrup and Read (2014), many organizations struggle to enhance teamwork amongst employees in their operation because employees do not feel as though their colleagues contribute equally which leads to promoting competitiveness instead of mutual support .The main objective of this study was to investigate the influences of teamwork on organizational development using one of the governments department, that is the Department of Employment and Labour in the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Provinces as a case study because of the benefits of teamwork such as improving employee relations, interpersonal skills, organizational effectiveness growth, flexibility and quality of work life.
The specific objectives of this study were to assess the influence of teamwork on the success of department development, to explore the influence of teamwork structure, productivity in the department, to determine the main factors contributing to team performance and department development with specific reference to factors such as, goals setting, roles, processes, trust and interpersonal relationships and finally to assess the role played by management in team development. In this study, different theories were applied throughout, such as GRPI, the T7 Model of team Effectiveness, Team Basics, the Hackman Model of Team Effectiveness, and Understanding Team Dysfunction because they assisted in help businesses and leaders understand how well their teams function and improve team building, management, and training to ultimately boost performance and accomplish shared goals. Each theory informed the study as follows, the efficient collaboration of high-performing teams to thrive. The GRPI model inform the study by helps leaders guide their teams toward success, identify operational issues, and work with team members to rectify them. The T7 Model of Team Effectiveness inform the study by assessing team members on their behavior and skills and measures the team itself against cohesion and performance goals. The Team Basics inform the study how the team works together and what work the team accomplishes. The Hackman model, inform the study by effective processes that enable information sharing, feedback, problem solving, and learning by team members. The Understanding dysfunctions of teamwork inform the study through absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment and avoidance of team accountability.
The study adopted the mixed methods philosophy approach whereby using qualitative and quantitative approaches were followed. The design of the study was sequential exploratory design because is used when there is a need to further explain a set of quantitative data with additional qualitative information, for example if employees are questioned about their satisfaction with their job and then conducted interviews to gain more information about why they responded the way they did. The sample of the study was four labour centres out of 16 from KwaZulu- Natal in which the employees at management level and non-management level (junior and senior management) were targeted because that will lead to large sampling and will be time-consuming, and it will be able to provide adequate information for generalization. A total of 143 team members participated in the study.
The sampling method adopted was convenience sampling technique because it was implementable, definitely easy and accessible to collecting data from participants and low cost. Data collection in the quantitative phase was the questionnaires because they are convenient to collect demographic information, personal opinions, facts, or attitudes from respondents and it also making the analysis process more efficient and less time-consuming to collect primary data. Data collection in qualitative phase was interviews because to explore the research subject and provide a more in-depth understanding of the phenomenon at hand and more broad and actionable insights. In the quantitative phase, data was analysed using descriptive statistical methods like mean, averages and percentages. In the qualitative phase, data was analysed using thematic coding and Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) Miner software. Data were presented using tables and figures. The results indicated that the outstanding and common challenges in teamwork are poor communication, leadership and conflicts arising from team members. Communication and trust were critical to teamwork efforts. Ultimately, there was a strong relationship between leadership and communication toward organizational performance of the Employment and Labour Department.
This study also revealed that employees’ performance depended much on the presence of job assistance at the organization. In other words, given the required support, the employees would perform their duty and would also plan for the development of the Department of government organization. The study found that for improvement in teamwork, roles and responsibilities should be clearly defined for every team member. It was recommended that the Department of Employment and Labour should build trust and respect within among team members and encourage clear, frequent communication, while giving teams autonomy in decision-making. Building a strong team, setting clear goals and showing appreciation are among the main actions necessary for improvement along with keeping employees informed of impending changes to their workplace
