Associations between personality organization, personality structure, mentalization, and inflammatory markers (IL-6 and CRP) in young adults with personality disorders

    No full text
Background: Maladaptive interpersonal patterns that significantly impair functioning are central to personality disorders (PDs). A paradigm shift towards dimensional models highlights the importance of severity. However, the relationship between the dimensional concepts of personality organization, personality structure, mentalization, as well as biological markers IL-6 and CRP, remains largely unexplored. Methods: This exploratory cross-sectional analysis draws on data from a longitudinal study with a subsample of 28-day clinic patients (mean age = 22, SD = 2; 64% female, 29% male, and 4% diverse) with impaired personality functioning. Convergent validity was assessed between the Structured Interview for Personality Organization (STIPO-R), the Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO-16), the OPD Structure Questionnaire (OPD-SQS), and the Mentalization Questionnaire (MZQ). Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured in serum, with BMI included as a covariate. Multiple testing corrections were applied. Results: Significant positive correlations were found between several STIPO-R dimensions and IPO-16, OPD-SQS, and MZQ dimensions. Furthermore, STIPO-R dimensions were positively correlated with higher IL-6. CRP was positively correlated with the OPD-SQS dimension shaping contact and the MZQ dimension emotional awareness. After controlling for BMI, associations with IL-6 remained significant, but not those with CRP. Conclusion: This cross-sectional study demonstrates that the STIPO-R is a reliable and valid instrument for the evaluation of PDs in adolescent patients. Notably, the inflammatory marker IL-6 showed significant correlations with dimensions of personality organization impairment in young adults, whereas the influence of BMI explained associations with CRP. These findings suggest that inflammatory processes could be a significant factor in the pathophysiology of personality disorders and open possibilities for integrating biomarkers into diagnostics and therapeutic approaches. Both the inflammatory markers and the STIPO-R could be helpful for treatment planning, monitoring the course of therapy, and making prognostic assessments. Future studies should include larger patient groups, healthy control subjects, and additional biomarkers to investigate dimensional diagnostic approaches further.Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

Domestic accelerationism : a history of feminist architecture and the abolition of reproductive labour

    No full text
Based on the theory of ‘domestic realism’ by Helen Hester and Nick Srnicek [1], which describes the widespread acceptance of the classic single-family home and the resulting lack of alternative models as the primary form of housing, the dissertation analyses both historical and contemporary feminist theories and concepts that go beyond this domestic realism, with a particular focus on architecture and urbanism. Using literary, theoretical, philosophical and archival sources, the dissertation analyses architectural and urban debates that aim to end the prevailing patriarchal social order and the traditional nuclear family. Aspects of gender, sex and class are of particular interest in this context. Throughout the study, links are established between theorists, philosophers and sociologists to architects and urbanists. The central case study of the dissertation is the work of GDR architect Karola Bloch, interpreted in Domestic Accelerationism: A History of Feminist Architecture and the Abolition of Reproductive Labour as a successor to the so-called ‘material feminists’ from the comprehensive study The Grand Domestic Revolution [2] by Dolores Hayden – a key reference work in the history of feminist architecture. Like the material feminists, Bloch’s objective as an architect was to reduce the burden of reproductive labour and to promote equal rights for women*. Like the feminists in Hayden’s study, she used a variety of methods and media for this purpose. Eventually, the dissertation connects to the present and highlights the areas of our society where the feminist spatial critiques of the case studies are still valid today and why contemporary feminist theory on the abolition of nuclear families should continue to be part of an architectural debate. The PERMA-Study : Development and Validation of an Instrument to assess Flourishing among Students in a Higher Education Context

    No full text
This thesis is dedicated to the development and validation of the PERMA study questionnaire in German language for the assessment of student flourishing in a university context. It is based on the PERMA model of Seligman (2011). A total of 585 students from Germany, Austria, and the German-speaking regions of Italy and Switzerland participated in the online survey. The scales of the instrument showed good internal consistency with Cronbach’s α between 0.76 and 0.88 and McDonald's ω between 0.77 and 0.88. Convergent and discriminant validity was demonstrated in comparison with established instruments such as the PWBS, SWLS, PHQ-9, and GAD-7. Incremental validity was also confirmed by predicting study satisfaction. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) revealed a suboptimal model fit (RMSEA = 0.091, 95% CI [0.083, 0.099]; CFI = 0.93; TLI = 0.91; SRMR = 0.052). Respecification slightly improved the fit but remained below the established cut-offs. In addition, dynamic cut-offs and a Bayesian CFA were calculated to support the stability of the structure. With the exception of the factor structure, all hypotheses were confirmed. Overall, PERMA-Study is a reliable and valid instrument, especially in assessing student´s satisfaction.

    No full text

    PPG to ECG signal reconstruction

    No full text
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of death worldwide. Effective treatment of CVDs requires early detection and diagnosis. The most commonly used test for CVDs is electrocardiography (ECG), which requires specialized equipment and trained staff. Photoplethysmography (PPG) provides a more accessible alternative but is often insufficient for clinical diagnostics. In this thesis, we explore reconstructing ECG signals from PPG data using convolutional and transformer-based neural networks, trained on the publicly available PulseDB dataset. To evaluate the reconstruction quality for downstream tasks, we train a CVD classification model on the reconstructed ECG signals. Although generalization to unseen subjects remains challenging, evaluation shows promising ECG reconstruction for subjects included during training.Ambros Lins, BScMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
