The starting point for archaeology, architectural history and monument preservation lies not only in the observation of impressive buildings, but above all in the ruins that serve as visible traces of times past. They are not only physical remnants of the past, but also objects of the imagination. They enable us to understand the past and create images of it. As repositories of cultural and collective memory, they help to establish connections between the past and the present. But what happens when these valuable places of remembrance fall into disrepair and lose their function as conveyors of history and culture? It is precisely this reality that shapes the fate of many ruins today and represents the worst-case scenario in dealing with them.
ANAMNISIS POLEOS is a design project that examines the history of the city of Kos through its historical archaeological sites and develops strategies for using ruins as an architectural resource. The aim is to reconcile the sensitive handling of architectural heritage with the complex challenges of location, context and preservation. Starting from the most significant site of the ancient city – today largely ignored – a new landscape is emerging that mediates between past and present, links urban levels and creates a space for remembrance, reflection and understanding.Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
The influence of snow and avalanche climate on the persistent avalanche problem in the Tyrolean and South Tyrolean Alps
Persistent weak layers (PWLs) represent one of the most complex avalanche problems to assess and forecast, even for experts, also in the Eastern European Alps, which are heavily frequented for winter tourism and experience a high number of avalanche incidents (Alpine Convention, 2018; Höller, 2009). While extensive work has been conducted in the Western Alps (Schweizer et al., 2024; Reuter et al. 2023) and North America (Roch, 1949; LaChapelle, 1966; Armstrong and Armstrong, 1987; Mock and Kay, 1992; Mock, 1995; Mock and Birkeland, 2000), comparable investigations for the Eastern Alps remain scarce. This study aims to classify regions in the Tyrolean and South Tyrolean Alps in different snow climates and to assess how these relate to the occurrence of persistent avalanche problems (PWLs). A binary climate classification adapted from Mock and Birkeland (2000) was applied to long-term meteorological records and snow cover simulations (SNOWPACK) from 31 weather stations. Avalanche problems were identified automatically using the AVAPro algorithm (Perfler et al., 2023). The results reveal that inner-alpine regions, which are characterized by colder and drier climate conditions, exhibit a greater frequency of PWLs than peripheral alpine zones. On average, inner-alpine stations recorded 17 PWL days per season, compared to 14.7 in peripheral zones, a difference that was statistically significant when aggregated across all years. Aspect-dependent variations were also observed, with north- showing the highest frequencies of PWLs, while south-facing slopes showed the lowest. These findings support the hypothesis that snow climate has a measurable influence on avalanche problem occurrence in the Eastern Alps. Although the observed differences are moderate, they provide valuable insight into regional avalanche dynamics and highlight the potential for refining avalanche forecasting models in Tyrol and South TyrolMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

Scientific Reports / Synergistic interplay between UV and urban particulate matter exposure induces melanocyte senescence and contributes to human skin aging
Extrinsic skin aging is driven by environmental factors, including ultraviolet (UV) radiation and air pollution. While melanocytes serve as key protectors against UV-induced damage, their role in aging, particularly through the process of senescence, remains underexplored. Here, we exposed human neonatal melanocytes and ex vivo skin explants to UV (UVA + UVB), urban particulate matter (UPM), and their combination (UV + UPM) to assess the effects on melanocyte function and skin aging. We demonstrate that combined UV + UPM exposure triggers oxidative stress, mitochondrial and DNA damage, senescence, apoptosis, and modulation of melanogenesis in human neonatal melanocytes. In addition, skin explants subjected to the same treatments showed hallmark features of aging, including epidermal thinning, barrier disruption, fibrosis, and altered pigmentation. These findings highlight that melanocytes respond to environmental stress through multiple interconnected mechanisms, potentially affecting both cell survival and pigmentary function. Our model offers a useful platform to study how environmental stressors affect melanocyte function and skin biology, potentially supporting the development of future strategies targeting pigmentation disorders and environmentally driven skin aging.
In recent years, topics like inclusion in schools and democratic education have been key issues in educational policy debates, as well as in schools themselves. Few studies attempt to relate the two topics, despite their potential. A suitable method to achieve this synergism is the class council. The idea of holding weekly meetings between students and teachers, during which they have equal rights, originated in the early 20th century and has since gained popularity. Based on the methods of action research, the introduction of a class council to a first-year secondary school class (more precisely "Mittelschule") over the course of a semester, is analysed. In particular, this study examines the conditions for a successful implementation of the council and the particularities that arise from the heterogeneity of the students. Drawing on literature and the results of previous implementations, the following conditions for success can be identified; teaching material, topic selection, the teacher and other factors. The latter become especially important before, during and after the class councils. In summary, a positive development is discernible in the studied class, for example a better relationship between teachers and students, enhanced communication skills, and more inclusive and democratic thinking among all participants. Furthermore results show that the implementation of the class council supports students’ academic performance, and that classes with inclusive education should also adopt this method.Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
Efficient numerical methods for classical simulations of open quantum many-body dynamics
Quantum computation and simulation promise to solve problems far beyond the reach of classical computers. Their potential stems from precise control of quantum many-body systems on platforms like trapped ions, neutral atoms, and superconducting circuits. Noise inevitably affects all these devices, motivating the development of new, efficient classical methods to benchmark quantum hardware, guide error correction, and chart the frontier between classical and quantum simulability. This thesis develops novel numerical methods for the efficient simulation of open quantum many-body systems on classical computers, building on advanced numerical techniques such as tensor networks, stochastic quantum trajectories, machine learning, and neural networks. The present thesis advances the numerical studies of open quantum many-body systems through the following contributions:
1. Introduction of a novel adaptive unraveling method for noisy quantum many-body dynamics. By exploiting tensor-network representations of quantum trajectories and selecting unravelings that minimize entanglement growth, this approach substantially reduces computational costs and extends the accessible simulation regimes.
2. Development of a general methodological framework for adaptive quantum trajectory unravelings, accompanied by a systematic comparison with conventional unravelings and other established simulation techniques, thereby clarifying their relative strengths and limitations.
3. Demonstration of a neural-network-based approach for simulating the dynamics of emitter chains coupled to one-dimensional Markovian waveguides. This method exhibits a promise to efficiently capture long-range correlations, enabling the study of dissipative effects in waveguide systems in experimentally relevant regimes.
The results presented in this thesis advance our ability to model noisy quantum many-body systems on classical computers, extend accessible dynamical regimes, and address particularly challenging problems, thereby contributing to a better understanding of the foundations of quantum computation and simulation.

The study investigates runoff generation in two Alpine catchments in the villages of Oberau and Niederau in the Wildschönau within the Wörgler Bach catchment (Kitzbühel Alps, Kufstein District, Tyrol) as well as in Steinberg am Rofan within the Mühlbach catchment (Rofan Mountains, Schwaz District, Tyrol). The objective is to describe the hydrological response to precipitation events, to identify runoff-controlling processes, and to evaluate the transferability of conceptual modeling approaches in complex terrain with infiltration-inhibiting structures and karst features. The basis is the event-based rainfall–runoff model ZEMOKOST, which relies on topographic and soil-hydrological parameters, runoff coefficients, surface roughness, and channel characteristics. In addition to a quantitative assessment of model performance, a qualitative comparison of response patterns is carried out, based on a detailed analysis of catchment characteristics. The results show that in the Oberau and Niederau catchment, runoff dynamics are shaped by lithological heterogeneity, whereas in the karst-dominated Steinberg am Rofan catchment, retention processes cause a significant delay in the runoff response.Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
