SPAC deals and determinants of their failures
This thesis examines the factors behind the liquidation of Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs) during the 2020–2021 boom. While SPACs briefly dominated U.S. IPO markets, many failed to complete mergers and were liquidated. Using logistic regression on a dataset of SPACs from this period, the study identifies key drivers of liquidation, including oversupply, poor target quality, and sponsor-investor misalignment. The findings provide insights into the structural weaknesses of the SPAC model and inform investors, sponsors, and regulators about associated risks.Mikhail KazakovMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
Coelomocyte characterization in Lumbricus terrestris under physiological and stress-induced conditions
The earthworm Lumbricus terrestris (L. terrestris) plays a critical role in soil ecosystems, where immune cells, coelomocytes, contribute to defense, regeneration, and homeostasis. Despite their importance, the detailed morphological and functional characteristics of coelomocytes remain underexplored. This thesis aims to further characterize coelomocytes under physiological and stress-induced conditions. Using fluorescent staining and microscopy, four coelomocyte subtypes were identified, which differ in their organelle activity and morphological structure, indicating functional heterogeneity. Upon bacterial exposure, the cells exhibited altered organelle characteristics in mitochondria and lysosomes. The receptor TLR2 particularly found in coelomocytes is known to be upregulated in L. terrestris after mechanical injury. However, the number of TLR2-positive cells remained unchanged between injured and control animals, raising new questions about immune regulation during regeneration. This multifaceted approach yields new insights into the immune and healing mechanisms of L. terrestris and enhances our understanding of their role in soil ecosystems.Luis Pötzl, BScAbstract in deutscher SpracheMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
Bridging strategy and technology : AI's role in open strategy
This thesis explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and applications enhance open strategy practices across idea generation, strategy formulation, and implementation. Leveraging Natural Language Processing (NLP) for AI-driven market entry strategies : a case study on German SME's
This study investigates how small and medium-sized German businesses (SMEs) can use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to support them in overseas markets. By conducting interviews with people and document analysis, the study reveals the major benefits, challenges, and ways through which SMEs use NLP. NLP enables businesses to break language barriers, know the customers, and make work easy, helping them compete on a worldwide scale. However, technical issues, lack of skills, and data privacy concerns make it difficult for SMEs to utilize NLP. Leadership, training, and university collaboration can help SMEs start the utilization of NLP, as described by the research. It also claims that SMEs can gain a lot from choosing the right NLP tools and fostering innovation. These results are highly beneficial in assisting SMEs that wish to grow using AI tools.Wisdom James OkonMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
Application of isogeometric analysis to the FE-simulation of deep tunnel advance by the NATM
The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is a construction method for conventionally excavated tunnels. Within the approach of NATM, the rock mass is seen as the main load-bearing component of the tunnel construction. This behaviour is achieved by allowing controlled deformations of the rock mass during the excavation process and by additionally installing supporting measures during the excavation process, in order to create a solid structure, surrounding the excavation area (support ring). When applying the NATM, numerical simulations represent a helpful tool for the prediction of the behaviour of the rock mass and the supporting measures during tunnel advance.
In this thesis the Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) is applied to the numerical simulation of deep tunnel advance, according to the NATM. Therefore, two-dimensional, axisymmetric and three-dimensional isogeometric simulations of sequential tunnel advance are performed. In order to account for the nonlinear constitutive behaviour of the rock mass, linear elastic, perfectly plastic material models are adopted.
In IGA the underlying basis functions are NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines), while in conventional finite element analysis (FEA) the underlying basis functions are polynomial functions. Special features of the NURBS basis functions, such as the positivity and the variation diminishing property, make IGA an interesting and promising method. In this thesis special attention is given to the geometrical description of two-dimensional, axisymmetric and three-dimensional isogeometric models for tunneling simulations. When using isogeometric discretisations, different options arise to model the excavation process. Two different approaches for modelling the sequential excavation process in axisymmetric and three-dimensional simulations are presented. The influence of the selected approach on the simulation of tunnel advance is described.
Within the thesis, the employed isogeometric finite element code is validated by comparison of results from two-dimensional isogeometric simulations with both, reference solutions based on conventional FEA and reference solutions available in the literature. The validated isogeometric FE-code is used for axisymmetric and three-dimensional isogeometric simulations of sequential tunnel advance. Within the thesis, two different plasticity formulations are presented and their influence on the results of axisymmetric isogeometric simulations of tunnel advance is analysed. Finally, three-dimensional isogeometric simulations of supported and unsupported tunnel advance are performed. These simulations represent a huge computational effort and thus a robust implementation and advanced numerical and computational methods are required. The obtained results proof that the isogeometric approach is applicable on large, parallel three-dimensional simulations of sequential tunnel advance.Martin Weis, BScKurzfassung in deutscher SpracheMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
Meaningful work in organizational sustainability efforts : bridging the gap between organizational change and individual work perceptions
Increasing pressure is pushing companies toward greater sustainability, but genuine
implementation demands more than surface-level efforts—it requires a transformation of
organizational culture. Such profound cultural shifts significantly affect employees and their
experience of work. Accordingly, this thesis asks: How do organizational sustainability efforts
influence employees’ perception of meaningful work? Adopting a qualitative approach, 13
sustainability professionals in Austria and Switzerland were interviewed to explore how
employees perceive sustainability initiatives and how organizational culture shapes these
experiences. The findings reveal that when sustainability is genuinely embedded within
organizational culture, it is closely associated with enhanced experiences of meaningful work.
Conversely, when sustainability is only superficially integrated—or when sustainability
professionals become overcommitted in unsupportive environments—the potential for
meaningful work is diminished. This thesis contributes to the literature by integrating insights
from sustainability, organizational culture, and meaningful work, thereby bridging the gap
between macro-level organizational change and micro-level employee experience. Practical
guidance is offered to support organizations in moving beyond compliance by embedding
sustainability into lived organizational practice.Florian BollMasterarbeit University of Innsbruck 202
Design of a regional carbon offsetting platform in Tyrol
Carbon offsetting was meant to be part of the solution, but too often, it falls short. Projects are far away, their impact is unclear and trust in the system is fading. This thesis asks: what if we brought offsetting closer to home? Focusing on the region of Tyrol, it explores how a local, transparent and community-driven offsetting platform could rebuild credibility and make climate action more tangible. Using a qualitative design science approach and insights from over 40 stakeholder interviews, the research identifies what people need in order to believe in and support offsetting. The outcome is a prototype platform tailored to Tyrol’s unique context, one that connects people directly with regional climate projects. While the Alps quietly remind us what’s at stake, this thesis aims higher: to show how local action can restore faith in a global idea.Jonas MüllerMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
Family business: evolution of status : a case study of Castel Fragsburg
Family-owned hotels play a crucial role in the hospitality sector, particularly in Italy. Castel Fragsburg provides a compelling example of how a family-run and family-owned guesthouse evolved into a luxury boutique hotel over seven decades. This master’s thesis examines how milestones impact strategic evolution, particularly regarding the development of the guest profile, which has evolved in tandem with the hotel. It adopts a qualitative, single-case study design based on semi-structured interviews with family members and employees, complemented by archival documentation. The Gioia method and temporal bracketing were applied to identify four distinct phases of transformation. The findings highlight how family identity, traditions, and storytelling were not only preserved but also actively reinterpreted to meet the evolving expectations of guests and the standards of the luxury market. It contributes to the family business and category evolution literature by illustrating how early visions and traditions can be a strategic resource. It offers insights into repositioning a family business over time while retaining authenticity and legacy.handed in by: Maximilian Carl OrtnerMasterarbeit University of Innsbruck 202
Economic inequality poses political and social challenges for many societies. Although the negative consequences are well documented, there seems to be a lack of broad support for measures to eliminate them. One possible explanation for this lies in inequality ideologies that manifest themselves in individual belief systems and justify social and economic disparities. Some of these ideologies are closely linked to the practices and thinking of neoliberalism as a socio-economic system. This study examines the role of such ideologies and attitudes in legitimizing economic inequality. For this purpose, an empirical online survey was conducted with german-speaking participants (N=344). The following variables were collected for analysis: neoliberal ideology, social dominance orientation, system justification, basic social justice oriantations, support for economic inequality and support for redistribution. The results showed that social dominance orientation, system justification and the entitlement principle are significantly associated with support for economic inequality. In addition, the motivation to justify the system mediates the effects of neoliberal ideology, social dominance orientation, the principle of equality and the principle of entitlement on support for economic inequality. The latter in turn has a significant positive correlation with support for means of redistribution.Luis OchsenkühnAbstract in englischer SpracheMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
