Abstract This thesis examines musical tempo memory within the framework of embodied cognition. Based on empirical evidence of the positive effects of motor engagement during the retrieval phase, the present study investigated whether the degree of motor engagement during the encoding phase exerts a gradual effect on tempo reproduction accuracy across four conditions: no movement, mental imagery of movement, seated movement, and standing movement. Additionally, two dispositional factors, empathy and sensorimotor musical reward sensitivity (SMRS), were examined. A mixed-methods design was employed to address the research questions. Although no significant relationship was found between the degree of motor engagement and tempo reproduction accuracy, seated movement emerged as the most effective condition. The IRI empathy dimension Perspective Taking showed a significant positive impact on tempo reproduction accuracy. No significant moderating effect of SMRS was found; however, additional exploratory analyses suggested that individuals with high SMRS scores performed significantly better in the seated and standing movement conditions. Furthermore, a direct positive relationship between SMRS and tempo reproduction accuracy was observed. Future research could include vocal participation as an additional condition and investigate during which phase motor engagement yields the greatest benefit: during the encoding phase, the retrieval phase or during both phases. These findings have practical implications for music education as well as for music therapy interventions that support individuals with Parkinson’s-related impairments.eingereicht von Verena Stützner, B.Sc.Abstract in englischer SpracheMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

Tinnitus is a multifaceted condition often accompanied by significant psychological distress. Beyond medical factors, psychosomatic variables have gained increasing attention, as differences in attachment representations and stress regulation may shape the individual perception of tinnitus. The present cross-sectional study investigated the role of attachment representations and psychological symptoms in relation to the subjective tinnitus distress. Data were collected from 76 patients suffering from tinnitus. Measures included the Tinnitus Questionnaire (TF), the Adult Attachment Projective – Relationship Choices (AAP-RC 4.0), and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). Results indicated that the majority of participants reported a compensated tinnitus, while over one-third experienced a decompensated form. No direct association emerged between insecure attachment and the degree of tinnitus distress. In contrast, a clear positive relationship between psychological distress and tinnitus distress was found, with depressive and anxiety-related symptoms being most strongly correlated with the emotional and cognitive dimensions of tinnitus. The hypothesis that attachment moderates the link between psychological distress and tinnitus was not supported. However, exploratory analyses suggested a stronger association among individuals with a preoccupied attachment representation. Overall, these findings highlight the pivotal role of psychological distress in shaping tinnitus distress, while the influence of attachment appears to be limited. Clinically, this underscores the importance of addressing affective and anxiety-related symptoms in tinnitus care. Future studies should replicate these results in larger samples and further examine differential effects of attachment.Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

Emotional tone on social media : examining user engagement, affective responses and contingent conditions

    No full text
Social media feeds have become emotionally charged environments that strongly shape users’ moods, cognitive states, and engagement. This thesis investigates how the emotional tone of social media content (negative, positive, neutral) influences user behavior and affective responses, and how individual dispositions and digital interventions modulate these effects. Building on theoretical frameworks such as Uses and Gratifications Theory, Core Affect Theory, Negativity Bias, the Limited Capacity Model of Motivated Mediated Message Processing, and the Transactional Model of Stress, the study formulates five hypotheses regarding content effects, emotional outcomes, moderating factors, usage intensity, and the role of digital reminders. An online experiment (N = 265) employed simulated Instagram feeds varying in content valence and the presence of a pop-up interruption. Results show that negative content significantly increased negative affect and reduced positive affect, while both negative and positive content elicited higher interest than neutral content. Contrary to expectations, loneliness and cognitive load did not moderate these effects, and overall social media usage did not predict higher engagement. This challenges previous assumptions and provide important insights into the limits of dispositional moderators and the role of usage intensity in dynamic feed environments Pop-up reminders were noticed by only a subset of participants, limiting statistical power, yet descriptively suggested a potential to trigger more deliberate engagement decisions. The findings confirm the strong emotional impact of negative feed content, highlight the general appeal of valanced information, and point to challenges in implementing effective design interventions. Implications are discussed for theories of media effects, platform design, and strategies to foster mindful social media use.Malena Ortiz de Rozas AriasAppendix in deutscher SpracheMasterarbeit University of Innsbruck 202

Linking mechanistic understanding and predictive performance of near-infrared spectroscopy through synergistic chemometric frameworks

    No full text
This thesis contributes to the advancement of modern near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) by jointly addressing two interlinked dimensions: mechanistic understanding of an analytical method and its predictive performance. By reaching into practical case studies from two widely important fields, materials science and the agri-food sector, the work demonstrates that enhanced transparency of an NIR method goes hand-in-hand with its analytical robustness. Spectral interpretation can directly support and justify the selection of instruments, wavelength windows or application of specific chemometric approaches. Rather than treating accuracy and interpretability as opposing goals, this thesis is based on the premise that informed model construction, grounded in chemical insight, represents a broader and more potent paradigm. The development of robust, domain-transferable NIR workflows depends not only on predictive success but on the preservation of interpretability and analytical traceability. This is demonstrated in four peer reviewed publications, all in first authorship and one published in a conference proceeding. NIRS has become an invaluable tool for various research fields and industrial sectors. This technique is non-destructive, rapid and reliable and therefore especially valued in agri-food applications. Where non-contact in-line probes and miniaturized technology enable process control at every stage from the field to the final product. NIRS provides unique structural information based on overtone and combination vibrations. However, due to the exhausting number of vibrational bands populating NIR spectra, chemometric techniques are necessary for their analysis. Advanced data analysis techniques, such as Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS), Support vector machines (SVMs), artificial neural networks (ANNs), and Multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares (MCR-ALS), are potent tools to extract valuable information from NIR spectra. In the case of very complex samples, the use of one single analytical technique might not be able to capture the sample characteristics precisely. Data fusion (DF), i.e., the combination of complementary analytical techniques, in combination with variable selection (VS), has been proven to provide more precise analysis results in such cases. Another key advantage of NIRS is its suitability to analyze aqueous systems in a reliable manner. The first publication of this thesis investigated the interaction of water with different polymers, ranging from commercial to biopolymers. To study this interaction in a systematic way, polymers with varying hydrophilicity were considered. The combined interpretation of a set of chemometric analysis techniques, including 2D-COS and difference spectroscopy, unraveled distinct spectral patterns associated with the hydrophilicity of the polymers. These insights into the molecular interaction of water and polymers facilitate the development of more effective materials. The fourth publication in a conference proceeding is also based on this study. NIRS is widely employed to authenticate food products, when fraud is a critical issue due to increasing market value and complexity of supply chains. This is especially true for Coffea arabica L. (i.e., Arabica coffee), which offers a selection of very rare and high-priced cultivars. Consequently, it is necessary to reliable differentiate between Arabica cultivars, which is very challenging due to their high genetic similarity. In this study it could be successfully shown that their discrimination was feasible by NIRS and non-linear chemometric methods. Additionally, to a benchtop NIR spectrometer, a handheld Vis-NIR and a benchtop UV-VIS spectrometer were applied in this case. Both showed reasonable discrimination performance. However, a DF approach of the Vis-NIR and UV-Vis proved to further refine the classification results. The third publication delves deeper into the study of Coffea arabica and aims to elucidate the physicochemical information underlying the NIR, Vis-NIR, and UV-Vis wavelength regions as a basis for Arabica cultivar differentiation. A combination of chemometric techniques, including synchronous 2D-COS, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), with additional rotation of the principal axes, and window-specific classification, was employed to analyze key wavelength features and inter-regional correlations. The findings highlight the critical importance of sample processing in selecting the most suitable spectroscopic technique and demonstrate how different wavelength regions capture diverse analytical information, such as vibrational and electronic absorption, roasting effects, color, and moisture content. Overall, the thesis demonstrates that NIRS, when coupled with chemically informed multivariate modelling, can achieve both high analytical accuracy and mechanistic clarity. This dual emphasis enables reliable material characterization in water–polymer systems and robust cultivar-level authentication in agri-food applications, providing both fundamental advance and transferable practical gains.Dissertation Universität Innsbruck 202

Bindung und Trauma in AAP-Narrativen von Jugendlichen mit Borderline-Symptomatik

    No full text
This master's thesis investigates attachment organization, defense mechanisms, and trauma- related content in AAP narratives of adolescents with varying degrees of borderline symptomatology. The analysis is based on 27 transcripts from the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP), collected from a clinical sample of adolescents aged 18 to 25 as part of the ongoing study “Clinical, structural, and biological changes in adolescents with personality disorders through multimodal psychodynamic psychotherapy in a day-clinic setting,” conducted in Innsbruck. Participants were divided into two groups—high and low symptom severity—based on the Borderline Symptom List (BSL-23). Childhood trauma was additionally assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). The study of this sub-sample examined whether the two groups differed in terms of attachment classification (secure, insecure-dismissing, insecure-preoccupied, unresolved), specific AAP markers (synchrony, agency), defense mechanisms (deactivation, cognitive disconnection, segregated systems), as well as the number and resolution of trauma-related contents. Furthermore, the association between CTQ scores and unresolved attachment was analyzed. Findings revealed a significant association between BSL-23 scores and overall wellbeing but showed no significant association between BSL-23 scores and the presence of an unresolved attachment classification. Expected differences regarding trauma markers, defense mechanisms, and attachment characteristics were largely non-significant. However, significant differences emerged on CTQ subscales for physical neglect, emotional neglect, physical abuse, and minimization. A significant negative correlation was also found between BSL-23 total scores and the AAP marker of agency. These results suggest that the relationship between borderline symptomatology, attachment representations, and trauma must be analyzed in a larger sample and are potentially moderated by additional factors such as mentalization capacity. The study underscores the relevance of attachment-informed diagnostics and psychotherapeutic interventions in adolescent patients with personality disorders.Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
