Calami tree
CalamiTree examines how a forest clearing destroyed by bark beetles can be repurposed through a language read in the bark beetle's feeding tracks. CalamiTree consists of two levels: a walkable structure (CalamiTAT) and a water system (CalamiTer) that brings water back to the clearing, thus supporting ecological processes. The goal is to redesign a bio-digital hybrid into a regenerative cycle, demonstrating that an ecological imbalance doesn't need to be eradicated, but rather understood and used for innovative solutions.

This thesis systematically devel-ops methodological frameworks for establishing robust statistical shape models usingOpenKnee(s) data, focusing on coordinate system definition, point cloud standardiza-tion, and surface sampling strategies for three anatomical structures: the anterior cruciateligament (ACL), tibial plateau, and combined tibiofemoral joint.
For ACL analysis, partitioning along the longitudinal axis (X-axis) demonstrated supe-rior performance over cross-sectional radius-based analysis, accommodating higher pointdensities (2,900 points) while maintaining morphological interpretability. PCA revealedthat ACL shape variability is distributed across multiple principal components withouthierarchical dominance, requiring 5-6 components to capture 94.8% of total variance, reflecting complex morphological adaptations of this primary knee stabilizer.
Tibial plateau analysis using partitioning along the longitudinal axis (X-axis) (29 sec-tions, 100 points each) successfully captured complex surface topography including theintercondylar eminence. The variance structure showed greater concentration than ACL,with Principal Component (PC)1 explaining 50.97% of total variance and the first threecomponents accounting for 82.13%, indicating that proportional scaling represents theprimary morphological variation.
Combined tibiofemoral analysis demonstrated feasibility of integrated joint modelingthrough common coordinate systems using anatomical landmarks and Iterative ClosestPoint (ICP) registration. However, visualization of joint space geometry remained chal-lenging due to point cloud limitations.
Critical limitations include insufficient sample size (N=8) for robust statistical modeling, edge effects in peripheral sampling regions, and lack of anatomically-oriented coordinatesystems. Reconstruction analyses consistently showed that models trained without targetspecimens defaulted to population means, highlighting fundamental constraints of smalldatasets.
The findings establish essential methodological foundations for knee joint SSM develop-ment while identifying key advancement areas: expanded datasets, improved peripheralsampling strategies, and anatomically-defined coordinate systems. This research pro-vides crucial insights into trade-offs between geometric accuracy and statistical robust-ness, providing a basis for comprehensive knee joint statistical shape models suitable forclinical applications in biomechanical simulation and therapeutic planning.Maya Anna Schwally, BScMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

Inflation and individuals‘ saving behavior : evidence from a controlled online savings experiment
This thesis analyzes the impact of inflation on individuals saving behavior. While prior studies have reported mixed effects of inflation, evidence at the individual level remains scarce due to data limitations. To address this gap, a controlled online experiment with 112 participants was conducted, which randomly assigned them to treatment and control groups. The experiment simulated a financial decision-making environment in which participants allocated monthly income between consumption, saving, and risky investment under varying inflation sequences.
The findings show that low inflation environments encourage both savings and risky investments, while high inflation primarily increases expenditure pressure, which often outweighs rational incentives to preserve purchasing power. Crucially, the inflation dynamic is a key determinant of savings behavior. Transitions from high to low inflation lead to particularly strong increases in savings and investment, and initial inflation exposure shapes later decision making. This study provides causal evidence on how inflation dynamics influence financial behavior, contributing to a deeper understanding of household savings during periods of macroeconomic instability. Future research could extend this framework by including larger and more diverse samples or testing alternative inflation sequences to capture long-term learning and adaptation effects.
The timber-concrete composite construction combines the advantages of both materials, enabling improved component behaviour in terms of load-bearing capacity and serviceability. The use of cross-laminated timber reduces manufacturing costs due to the prefabricated elements and also allows a biaxial load-bearing behaviour due to the orthogonal orientation of the layers. The notch has established itself as an effective fastener that transfers shear forces between the concrete layer and the timber element. This is a milling groove that is filled with concrete and is therefore primarily based on the principle of tight fit.
Although the current standard contains important information on the design and construction of wood-concrete composite components, cross-laminated timber is not included in the minimum requirements for notched connections. The corresponding national annexes, on the other hand, largely include the use of cross-laminated timber, but the design data is incomplete or limited to certain notch depths. In order to activate and calculate a biaxial load-bearing effect, more investigations are necessary. By means of experimental analyses, practical approaches are being developed that reflect both the load-bearing capacity and the actual stiffness of a notched connection in cross-laminated timber. The relevant properties here are those of the transverse layer, in particular the rolling shear strength and the rolling shear modulus. Furthermore, wood-concrete composite construction repeatedly raises the question of whether and to what size friction occurs between the two composite materials and to what extent this primarily benefits the requirements for serviceability. Experimental procedures show that friction forces are transmitted even when separating layers are installed. The size of the coefficient of friction depends on the separating layer installed. In the case of direct contact between concrete and timber, no influence of wood moisture is apparent. In order to quantify the moisture interaction between the concrete and the cross-laminated timber, the wood moisture is measured in a separate test configuration from the beginning of concreting. This results in the recommendation that the installation moisture content of the wooden elements should be limited.
The results and findings from the investigations provide an important basis for additional information in standardisation and, subsequently, for future research work. For example, the Unit of Timber Engineering at the University of Innsbruck is already conducting further research into wood-concrete composite construction in bending beams. This research aims to represent the load-bearing behaviour of notched connections in the practical application of a composite floor and to examine the necessity of lift-off protection for notched connections in more detail.Wolfgang Oberascher, BScMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 2025Enthält Abstract in englischer Sprach
A systematic review of the impact of financial literacy and socio-psychological factors on saving behavior and financial decision-making across socio-demographic groups
The aim of the thesis is to investigate the relationship between financial literacy and sociopsychological variables in relation to saving behavior and financial decision-making, with a particular focus on different geographic groups. A systematic literature review was completed, following the PRISMA guidelines, and categorized into three thematic strands: financial literacy, socio-psychological variables, and socio-demographic differences. This three-theme format provides a clear and structured way to represent the literature while still taking into account the complexity of the interplay between knowledge, behavior and the social context to account for personal and socio-demographic differences.
The results indicate that financial literacy is important for financial decision making, but having knowledge doesn't equal action. Saving behaviors are shaped by psychological tendencies, social pressure, demographics and access to capital. Acknowledging differences related to age, gender, income, education and culture, as well as their intersections reminds us of the need to address behavioral and policy responses that are tailored to subpopulations. While technology is useful in that it improves access to financial resources, it also poses risks if not followed up with guidance and behavioral support.
Finally, the research highlights the necessity of a multi-dimensional approach to financial education and policy because knowledge, behavior and structural conditions should be treated as a unit in developing responses in relation to diverse populations.Ondrej VlasakMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
The effect of risk strategy on credit decision-making : evidence from a field experiment in the banking sector
Risk strategies and risk appetite are regarded as key control instruments for banks. Their effectiveness depends heavily on whether employees understand these guidelines and translate them into decisions consistent with the defined risk strategy. This study investigates how the formulation of risk strategies influences the behavior of bank employees in their credit decision-making processes.
In a field experiment, two versions of a risk strategy were presented: one security-oriented and one opportunity-oriented. Following this, all participants were given identical credit decisions. The results show that even minor linguistic differences can measurably alter employees’ risk tolerance in their credit decisions.
The study clearly demonstrates that framing and priming effects play an important role in the implementation of risk strategies and risk appetite. These findings have practical implications for banks, highlighting the importance of formulating risk strategy statements in a way that ensures they are consistently understood and applied.Herbert Rudigier, MSc.Appendix in deutscher SpracheMasterarbeit University of Innsbruck 202
