A novel framework for the definition of “Gerinneschutzwald” protection forests in South Tyrol

    No full text
In alpine regions, debris flows and torrential flooding are common hazardous processes that occur in mountain streams and involve high quantities of both water and sediment. They pose significant risks to human populations and infrastructure and cause major damages every year. Forests can provide effective protection against these natural hazards: they reduce surface runoff, hinder sediment input into streams, and stabilize channel banks. They are therefore relevant for a wide range of channel processes. In Switzerland, forests providing this specific type of protection are named with the German term “Gerinneschutzwald”. They are described, mapped and included in the Swiss databases and forest management guidelines. Since South Tyrol is highly susceptible to phenomena such as debris flows and flash floods, this thesis work proposes the adaptation and application of this concept to the South Tyrolean territory. Therefore, a method was developed to identify and map “Gerinneschutzwald” protection forests in South Tyrol by analysing the underlying processes and adapting the Swiss guidelines to the data and algorithms of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. The developed method had to be GIS-based, largely automated and consistent with the existing procedures. “Gerinneschutzwald” was also integrated in the overall map of protection forests, by making a distinction between site and object protection functions of forests. This is essential to identify which forest areas protect settlements and infrastructure from debris flows and torrential flooding, allowing to set priorities for protection forest maintenance. Another focus of this work was providing general management principles for “Gerinneschutzwald” that could be applied across the entire South Tyrolean territory. This was done based on the Swiss guidelines, other scientific papers, and some analyses that were performed on “Gerinneschutzwald” areas regarding the amount of forest cover loss in the last two decades and the distribution of forest types. The development of practical guidelines, together with the spatial identification of protection forests, are indeed essential to promote an active and targeted forest management. Forests can indeed play a protective function only if they are properly and sustainably managed. This is becoming particularly important considering the current increase in natural disturbances, also triggered by the changing climate, which causes higher risks from natural hazards and weakening of forest stability.

Artificial intelligence is finding its way into more and more areas of our society. Especially in the field of medicine, intelligent medical devices are increasingly used. For example, they are deployed in medical treatment, disease prevention or patient aftercare. From a legal perspective, the deployment of these systems shows problems in the areas of approval and liability. Besides, ethical concerns are also associated with these systems. Market access has mostly been granted to medical devices in the approval process that have a certain frozen technical level. Intelligent medical devices do not comply with this requirement, because their algorithms develop and adapt over the course of use. This paper discusses how far the law of AUT (EU Law) and USA grants market access for intelligent medical devices. The characteristics of AI systems – i.e., their complexity, opacity and ability to evolve – also cause difficulties in liability law. It is questionable who is liable in the case of damage caused by a faulty intelligent medical device. Due to the black box characteristics of AI, the faultiness is usually not recognizable for the AI user. Because of this, the damage cannot be attributed to anyone. This liability problem is illustrated in the following work in legal comparison between AUT, GER, EU and USA. Furthermore, the use of AI also raises ethical concerns. The following work uses ethical principles to show how a trustworthy approach with AI in medicine looks. Moreover, selected areas of our law are examined to prove how far our legal system ensures an ethical handling with these products. Therefore, interventions in patient rights including the right to informed consent, the right to medical treatment and the right to compensation are highlighted. Ethical principles are also violated due to these interventions.Mag. iur. Paul ZimmermannAbstract in englischer SpracheDissertation Universität Innsbruck 202

Food web dynamics : unraveling how temporal changes in trophic networks affect biocontrol ecosystem services

As seasons progress, cereal field habitats undergo drastic shifts, with well-known phenological and community changes. These changes, whether natural or human-induced can influence the interaction networks among the species in these fields. Many of these interactions are often antagonistic, and can affect population range, community structure, and behaviour. When directed at pest species, these antagonistic interactions constitute an ecosystem service, in the form of biological control. However, very little is known about how this service is built-up and regulated over the course of a crop season; mainly due to the inherent challenges of studying such a service, found at the intersection of community, food web, and behavioural ecology. Therefore, the principal aims of this body of work were to address these knowledge gaps, generating a time series data set of both the invertebrate community, and molecularly-derived generalist predator diet data, over two years. The effects of organic fertilization were assessed on prey availability, predator competition and intraguild predation, to quantify the biological control being exerted. Alongside this, critical periods and food web settings for biological control were identified, by analysing predator behaviour. These sensitive periods, when this service may break down, were further investigated by looking into food web parameters. Beginning with Chapter 2, organic fertilization positively correlated with alternative, or non-pest, prey availability, and negatively so with intraguild predation. Pest spread in the fertilized treatment decreased when intraguild predation was lower, although no effect was found for the average aphid field count. Chapter 3 shows the food web’s network-level specialisation seasonal variation, with a valley in the mid-season, but uncorrelated to fertilization. Predator diversity was lower in the fertilized treatment in the first year, decreasing over the season, while rising slowly in the second, with no effect of treatment. Prey diversity, on the contrary, had identical trends, showing a peak in the mid-season. In Chapter 4, the food web parameters also differ between years, with weighted connectance declining over time only in the second one. Both trophic link rewiring and community composition dissimilarities fluctuated more in the second year, with rewiring being almost always higher. Species-level specialisation trends over time differed for each respective prey, with the exception of springtails, which were null in both years. For aphids and cereal leaf beetles, in particular, their specialisation decreased as their respective abundances peaked during the middle of the season. The findings in this work show that organic fertilization can contribute to biological control, by containing pest spread within the fields. Although specialisation was not affected by the fertilization treatment, this improvement in biological control is best explained by changes in predator behaviour. The variations in network specialisation, species specialisation, and prey diversity point to phenology, rather than fertilization, as the driver of the behavioural shifts in predators, as they adapt to prey abundance. These shifts in behaviour are also mostly responsible for the changes in the food webs, as the link rewiring was higher than community dissimilarity. Furthermore, this implies that early and late cropping season are vulnerable periods for biological control, when predator behaviour is most constrained and their dietary overlap is lowest. Altogether, these results show how quickly invertebrate communities and food webs change within the same season; further reinforcing the need for time series data to accurately represent food webs and gain better understanding of biological control.presented by: Pedro Nuno Branco Leote, MScKumulative Dissertation aus drei ArtikelnDissertation University of Innsbruck 202

Escaping the speed trap : routinising deceleration through embodied practices

    No full text
In contemporary life, consumers are constantly urged to be faster, more efficient, and endlessly available (Rosa, 2013). While this rhythm promises productivity, it often results in stress, fatigue, and a sense of being disconnected from oneself. As a result, individuals look for ways to step outside this pace and create moments of slowness (Husemann & Eckhardt, 2019). However, such pauses are usually fragile and temporary, rarely transforming into stable habits. This thesis explores how consumers can move beyond temporary slowing down and embed decelerative practices in routines. In particular, this study investigates how yoga and related slow embodied practices recalibrate internal rhythms and help consumers to find stillness. Firstly, the definition of embodied deceleration by Husemann & Eckhardt (2019) is meaningfully expanded by suggesting that slow bodily practices can vary in tempo, structure, and bodily engagement, depending on an individual’s internal temporal experience. Moreover, breathwork turns out to be a powerful mechanism of internal self-regulation that shapes the temporal and experiential qualities of bodily practice. By regulating the respiration, breathwork practices demonstrate that bodily rhythms are not merely reactive to external structures but can be actively composed and re-patterned from within (Lefebvre, 2004). Secondly, while existing research has largely examined routines through the lens of social practice theory (SPT), this study expands the discussion by suggesting that repetition, while vital, is insufficient for the endurance of practices unless it is continuously reinforced (Shove, Pantzar, & Watson, 2012). Furthermore, this study suggests a dual anchoring framework, representing stabilising forces that gently hold slow practices in place. Thirdly, this study expands empirical insights into the lived experiences of practitioners and the nuanced challenges they face once routines are established. This thesis highlights the internal and affective vulnerabilities of practices, extending SPT discussions that have generally privileged external or material disruptions (Reckwitz, 2002). Lastly, to better understand how practitioners cope with routine fluctuations and disruption, the research investigates the possible strategies for routine rehabilitation. The findings meaningfully expand the prior knowledge within SPT by bringing attention to micro-mechanisms of routine re-engagement.

Parenteral administration of drugs ensures stability and high bioavailability; however, it is often associated with lower patient adherence and higher healthcare costs. In contrast, oral administration is more convenient and patient-friendly, but remains a major challenge for peptide-, protein-, and nucleic acid-based drugs due to their poor membrane permeability and instability in the gastrointestinal tract. This growing challenge has led to the development of innovative drug delivery systems. This thesis explores three distinct surface modification strategies for lipid-based nanocarriers aimed at enhancing the oral delivery of hydrophilic macromolecular drugs by overcoming the intestinal barrier. In the first strategy, surface thiolation was investigated. Thiolation of the lipid-based nanocarrier resulted in a notable increase in cellular internalization. The second approach compared PEGylated, zwitterionic, and polyglycerol (PG)-based surfactants. While PEGylation improves mucus penetration, it limits cellular uptake and endosomal escape. In contrast, zwitterionic surfactants showed enhanced cellular uptake and superior biocompatibility compared to PEGylated lipid-based nanocarriers. A comprehensive analysis revealed that both zwitterionic and PG-based formulations outperformed PEGylated ones in cellular uptake when tested with mucus-secreting intestinal models, while maintaining comparable mucus diffusion properties. As a third strategy, the influence of surface charge was assessed. Cationic lipid-based nanocarriers were demonstrated to have enhanced cellular uptake compared to neutral or anionic ones, however they are known for limited mucus permeation. To address this, an enzyme-responsive charge-converting strategy was employed, enabling the surface of the nanocarriers to transition from a negatively charged state to a cationic surface upon reaching the epithelial surface. This dissertation presents a set of strategies for the surface modification of lipid-based nanocarriers. Such modifications play a critical role in the development of drug delivery systems and should be thoughtfully integrated into the design of lipid-based nanocarriers for oral peptide delivery.eingereicht von: Daniel StengelKumulative Dissertation aus vier ArtikelnDissertation Universität Innsbruck 202
