    Betreuung von Diplomarbeiten NEU an Vorarlberger Handelsakademien : eine Interviewstudie

    Im Zuge einer österreichischen Bildungsreform wurde im Jahr 2015/16 die Diplomarbeit NEU an den berufsbildenden höheren Schulen eingeführt, welche die vorangegangene Projektarbeit ablöst. Mit dieser Umstellung auf die Diplomarbeit NEU kamen zahlreiche Veränderungen auf die Lehrpersonen und deren Betreuungsarbeit zu. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Masterarbeit mit den Betreuungssituationen und den damit zusammenhängenden Herausforderungen aus Sicht der Lehrpersonen. Angesichts dessen wurde eine Interviewstudie an den Vorarlberger Handelsakademien durchgeführt, bei welcher acht Lehrpersonen zu ihrer Diplomarbeitsbetreuung befragt wurden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Betreuungssituationen an den Vorarlberger Handelsakademien sehr individuell und von hoher Diversität geprägt sind und die Lehrpersonen mit einigen Herausforderungen bei der Betreuung von Diplomarbeiten NEU konfrontiert werden. Abschließend konnten Betreuungstypen und empfehlenswerte Betreuungspraktiken für die Praxis abgeleitet werden.As part of an Austrian educational reform, the “Diplomarbeit NEU” was introduced at vocational schools in 2015/16, replacing the previous project work. This changeover to a pre-scientific work has brought along numerous changes for teachers and their supervisory work. Due to this background, this master thesis deals with the supervision situations and the associated challenges from the teachers' perspective. Therefore, an interview study was carried out at commercial schools in Vorarlberg, in which eight teachers were interviewed about their supervision. The results show that the supervision situations at these schools are very individual and characterized by a high degree of diversity and that the teachers face several challenges when supervising pre-scientific work.     Magnesiumsulfat-Hydrate in Dolomitkalk : Phasenübergänge, Bildungsmechanismen und damit verbundene Schäden an historischen Bauwerken

    Die Untersuchung des Dehydratisierungsverhaltens von Magnesiumsulfat-Hydraten zeigt, dass Phasenübergänge wie jener von Epsomit zu Hexahydrit stark kinetisch gesteuert sind und nicht den thermodynamischen Erwartungen folgen. Die Reversibilität dieses Übergangs konnte mittels XRD nachgewiesen werden, eine damit verbundene Volumenzunahme wurde jedoch nicht beobachtet. Stattdessen traten temperaturinduzierte Ausblühungen auf. STA-Messungen belegen eine stufenweise Dehydratisierung, wobei sich abhängig von Probe und Messprogramm einzelne Hydratstufen als stabiler erwiesen als bislang angenommen. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die Stabilität von Starkeyit, der selbst nach einigen Tagen und während der XRD-Messung erhalten blieb. Die Ergebnisse verdeutlichen, dass das Verhalten von Magnesiumsulfat-Hydraten komplexer ist als es thermodynamische Gleichgewichtsmodelle vermuten lassen. Gerade für den praxisnahen Kontext ist daher eine detaillierte Betrachtung der kinetischen Prozesse entscheidend, um verlässliche Vorhersagen zu treffen und geeignete Restaurierungsmethoden entwickeln zu können.The investigation of the dehydration behavior of magnesium sulfate hydrates shows that phase transitions, such as from epsomite to hexahydrite, are strongly kinetically controlled and do not follow thermodynamic expectations. The reversibility of this transition was confirmed by XRD, however, an associated volume increase was not observed. Instead, temperature-induced efflorescences occurred. STA measurements demonstrate a stepwise dehydration process, with certain hydrate stages proving more stable than previously assumed, depending on the sample and measurement program. Notably, starkeyite remained stable even after a few days and during XRD analysis. The results indicate that the behavior of magnesium sulfate hydrates is more complex than predicted by thermodynamic equilibrium models.     Abstract This master thesis explores how speculative design and AI-assisted storytelling can help us to approach Hyperobjects—entities so vast and interconnected that they defy human comprehension. Focusing on the industrial landscape of the Permian Basin as case study, it shifts attention from urban centers to overlooked rural spaces. Through field research, including video documentation and interviews, the study gathers qualitative data to inform speculative worldbuilding. A key outcome is The Spirits We Summoned, a 40-minute documentary, followed by an interactive exhibition that engages audiences with computationally generated future scenarios. A Cellular Automaton (CA) was developed to model these speculative futures, generating dynamic configurations of land use states that reflect industrial, environmental, and social transformations. By integrating AI-generated imagery, the CA acts as a “dream machine,” continuously exploring evolving scenarios rather than predicting fixed outcomes. This research introduces a novel methodology for investigating industrialized spaces through speculative fiction, computational modeling, and interactive storytelling.     Um sich den Veränderungen unserer Umwelt und der Gesellschaft durch den Wandel der Natur anzupassen, benötigt es die Initiative des eigenständigen Handelns von Menschen, die die Zukunft nachhaltig gestalten können. Schüler*innen müssen dahingehend Rahmenbedingungen geboten werden, in denen sie sich selbstständig den wichtigen Themen der ökologischen, ökonomischen und sozialen Dimensionen unserer Zukunft widmen und Möglichkeiten des nachhaltigen Handelns erschließen. Die Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung als fächerübergreifende Integrationsmöglichkeit in der Schule kann die Thematik der nachhaltigen Entwicklung pädagogisch auf alle wichtigen Dimensionen ausbreiten. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich daher der projektorientierten Auseinandersetzung von Schüler*innen mit Möglichkeiten des nachhaltigen Umgangs mit Wasser und dem damit verbundenen Kompetenzgewinn der Schüler*innen für die Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlich relevanten Themen in Bezug auf die nachhaltige Zukunft der Gesellschaft.In order to adapt to the environmental and societal changes induced by the transformation of nature, we need individuals to take the initiative to act independently and shape the future in a sustainable way.     The success of SAP Business One in a medium-sized company : a theory-based evaluation

    The aim of this study is to evaluate the success of SAP Business One, the ERP system implemented in a medium-sized Austrian company. This evaluation is based on Ifinedo’s ERP System Success Model, which builds upon the frameworks of Gable et al. and the well-established DeLone & McLean Information Systems Success Model. Ifinedo’s model assesses ERP success through six dimensions: System Quality, Information Quality, Vendor Quality, Individual Impact, Workgroup Impact, and Organizational Impact. Using Ifinedo’s model, this study examines which dimensions are perceived as most relevant to the success of SAP Business One in the examined medium-sized company. Additionally, the model’s practical applicability is examined in a real-world context, and SAP Business One’s overall success is assessed as a secondary objective. To achieve this, a mixed-methods approach was employed, primarily focusing on quantitative analysis and supplemented by qualitative insights. Data were collected through a paper-based questionnaire distributed to 27 SAP Business One end users across various departments in the medium-sized company. The questionnaire combined closed-ended questions using a 5-point Likert scale with comment fields, allowing for both quantitative and qualitative data collection. Subsequently, descriptive statistical analysis was conducted in Excel, calculating means, standard deviations, and medians. Qualitative data were analysed using Mayring’s qualitative content analysis, applying a deductive category system based on the model’s dimensions. The findings reveal that Information Quality is perceived as the most relevant dimension for SAP Business One’s success in the examined medium-sized company. Since ERP systems are designed to provide accurate and up-to-date information across departments, end users rely heavily on reliable data to perform their tasks effectively. Moreover, the overall success assessment indicates that the system is generally perceived positively, particularly at the organisational level. However, challenges such as data maintenance issues, slow system performance, and the need for additional training were identified, negatively impacting the system’s effectiveness. While identifying areas for improvement was not the primary objective of this study, these findings from the qualitative data further highlighted the relevance of certain dimensions and offer insights for improving SAP Business One in the long run. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that Ifinedo’s ERP System Success Model is a valuable tool for evaluating ERP success in real-world settings. A key strength of the model lies in its structured evaluation approach, which makes it possible to assign specific measurement items to each dimension (operationalisation). This allows for a detailed analysis of SAP Business One’s success across different areas. However, the findings suggest that adding an additional dimension, such as Training Quality, could further enhance the model’s practical relevance. As research on ERP success evaluation is still limited, this study contributes to both theory and practice by demonstrating how a theory-based model can be applied in a real-world scenario.     Reconstructing and homogenizing lightning in Austria

    This study presents the first effort to reconstruct and homogenize cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flash measurements. The focus lies on Austria, where the Lightning Detection & Information System (ALDIS) has been recording CG flashes since 1992. Over time, advancements in both hardware and software have altered the detection process, affecting the consistency of flash data. Establishing homogeneous lightning observations is essential for understanding how lightning activity responds to ongoing climate change. This thesis employs a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) to link observed CG flashes with consistent meteorological ERA5 reanalysis data. The analysis is performed on a spatial grid comprising 209 cells, each measuring 0.25 x 0.25°, with an hourly resolution. The model was trained with measurements from the most current hardware and software configuration of ALDIS in the years 2022-2023. The results of the study are divided into two parts: first, the hourly probability of at least one flash occurring per grid cell is analyzed, while in a subsequent phase the flash counts per cell-hour are reconstructed. In order to estimate flash hour probabilities, a logistic regression model incorporating 90 variables derived from ERA5 was applied. This comprehensive variable set demonstrated superior performance compared to a climatological reference and a simpler GAM model, achieving high accuracy during the training period and when tested on reprocessed datasets from the summers of 2004 and 2005. Generally, measurements made in years with similar configurations to the state-of-the-art ALDIS setting showed a good agreement with the reconstruction, this is observable from 2019-2023. Larger discrepancies exist especially in the first years from 1992 until 1994 and from 2000 until 2015, coinciding with operational issues within the ALDIS network. Trend analysis of reconstructed flash hour probabilities shows a gradual increase over the 32 year span, contrasting with the declining trend of the corresponding measurements. This discrepancy underscores the critical influence of updates in the lightning detection network. In particular the classification of CG strokes and the algorithm that groups strokes into flashes have improved significantly in recent years. In a second step, flash counts were reconstructed using a Hurdle model with a zerotruncated negative binomial distribution to account for the local rarity and the overdispersion of lightning flashes. The model systematically underestimated observed measurements, particularly during periods of elevated hourly flash rates. Nonetheless, the reconstruction revealed that ALDIS, recognized as one of the most reliable lightning detection networks globally, likely overestimated CG flashes, particularly during its early phase (1992–1994) when relying on magnetic direction finders, as well as during a firmware issue between 2006 and 2009.
