Fabrication and characterization of a piezoresistive humidity sensor with a stress-free package
A highly miniturized piezoresistive humidity sensor has been developed. The starting point of the developement was a 1x1 mm2 piezsoresistive pressure sensor chip. As sensing material, a polyimide was used that swells with increasing adsorption of water molecules. To convert the swelling into an electrical signal, a thin layer of the polimide was deposited onto the bending plate of the pressure sensor. The humidity sensor was characterized in a climate chamber. The measurements show a sensittivity of 0.25 mV per percent relative humidity (%RH) and a non-linearity of 3.1 % full scale (FS) in the range of 30-80%RH. A high cross-sensitivity to temperature of around 0.5 mV°C was measured, so temperature compensation is necessary. For stress-free packaging of the sensor chip, a novel packaging technology was developed
The prominence of the web as a distribution channel for hotel rooms as well as its transparency and ease for price comparison create a need for the hoteliers to think strategically in terms of rate setting and pricing practices on numerous web-based distribution channels. The overarching purpose of this exploratory study is to investigate the current online pricing practices of luxury hotels in Germany and to explore potential challenges that they face in distributing their rooms on the web. The data covering 29 hotels in the top 4 primary cities in Germany was collected from 11 B2C, web-based distribution channels over a 26-day period at 6 separate points in time leading up to predetermined arrival date. These channels, including the hotels' own websites along with 10 indirect channels, represent various types of operation. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics. Personal interviews with the regional director of revenue management and the regional web & e-commerce ex-ecutive of an international hotel company were conducted to support the findings and to gain supplemental insights into the relevant issues. Key findings of this study were that a complete rate consistency did not exist across the utilized channels, and that a customer who surfs the web for a particular hotel may find better rates and conditions than those offered by the hotels' own websites, which negates the best-rate guarantee that is claimed by many hotels. The reselling of net rates to the end-customer on the web was identified as a crucial challenge faced by the hoteliers, which leads to the loss of a hotel's control over pricing. Furthermore, the findings suggest that in many instances, the hoteliers neither applied logical pricing practices nor ensured an adequate presence on the web. Logical pricing practices aim to optimize revenue, while ensuring customer satisfaction. This paper is meant to be a starting point for hoteliers who are interested in better understanding the power of online pricing and its impact on hotel profitability, and to reevaluate their prices and presence across the various web-based distribution channels. Shifting away from complex revenue management systems, this study outlines some recommendations that could be useful for hoteliers in their effort to maximize their revenues and profit, while keeping the focus on the customer as a focal point.

Giving deeper insights into the mechanisms of initial wet web strength development by an advanced explanatory model
Introduction: The initial wet web strength (IWWS) is one of the most important parameters for effective paper machine performance[1]. As previous research has shown, a huge variety of parameters is already known to have an impact on the IWWS [2]. Despite this fact, there is still an on-going discussion on possible explanations for the mechanisms of initial wet web strength development [3]. One fact is that the mechanisms for strength development at low solid contents are quite different from those of dry paper. However up to today it is not clearly defined which forces are addressed to which fibre characteristics at certain dryness levels, and their effect on the IWWS. The goal of this paper is to discuss existing explanation models for IWWS development and to complement these, generating an advanced model by the inclusion of own trial results.
Methods: For this study full factorial design of experiments (DOE) [4]was implemented in order to determine the weighting of important factors like dryness level, degree of refining, degree of hornification and conductivity on the IWWS. The goal was to use this DOE-method within the field of paper strength research in order to receive advanced information on the mechanisms of strength development at different dryness levels. The study was carried out with laboratory hand sheets, made of commercial bleached soft wood pulp, which was refined in a laboratory valley beater. The IWWS was measured according to a German standard DIN 54514.
Results: The data analysis showed that weighing of IWWS-influencing factors is possible. This may lead to a better understanding of paper strength development mechanisms at dryness levels below 50%. The applied method has proven to be reliable for the determination of impact factor weighing.
This work carried out to what extent changed parameters changes the IWWS in relation to the baselines of beating and dryness. So it was shown that the effect of dryness level as well as the degree of beating are as expected positive and quite big. In relation to this, the effect of hornification is low and the one of conductivity is highly negative. These results give deeper insights into the mechanism of IWWS development and an advanced explanatory model will be presented. The generated knowledge provides the tool for a better understanding of the phenomena of IWWS development and enables the papermaker to optimize the production processes accordingly
A Framework for Calibration of Barometric MEMS Pressure Sensors : EUROSENSORS 2014, the XXVIII edition of the conference series
Barometric MEMS pressure sensors must be calibrated at several temperatures and pressures. The fewer calibration points are needed to fulfill a sensor specification, the faster sensor production is. This paper proposes a polynomial approach for determining optimal sensor calibration, using the minimum number of calibration points necessary. In an experiment the framework is applied to the following sensor types: Bosch BMP085, Bosch BMP180, and EPCOS T5400. Influences of temperature operation range and pressure range are discussed in the experiment. Further, optimal calibration point suggestions are identified
Ab Initio Calculations Concerning the Phase Stabilization of Ferroelectric and Anti-Ferroelectric Zirconia Crystals with Dopants
Ferroelectric field- effect-transistors, based on Zirconia or Hafnia, have the potential to play an important roll in future non-volatile electronic memory devices. Artificial stabilization of the ferroelectric phase is necessary, since the ferroelectric phase is not the natural occurring phase of those materials. The intension of this work is to investigate the influence of II- and IV-valent dopants on the phase stability of Zirconia, using Ab Initio calculations based on density functional theory. Experimental results show ferroelectricity for dopant concentrations in the percent margins. Therefore the necessity to use large 96 atomic supercells arises, in which individual atoms can be removed or replaced with a dopant atom. The calculations were performed on the ICE1-segment of the Leibniz Rechenzentrum in Munich, using the program Abinit. Parallelization occurred, using up to 120 cores. The used exchange correlation method was PW92 at a cut off energy of 30 Ha, the atomic positions were optimized using the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno-Minimization-Method. Several different external constraints to optimize lattice parameters were investigated. The results show, that for the chosen dopant concentration the monoclinic phase is always favored. That implies that other effects like thermal energy or surface tension might also play a roll in stabilizing the ferroelectric phase. None the less dopants have a big impact on the total energy of the different phases, especially the tetragonal phase. Since in contrast to experimental results the dopants did not stabilize the ferroelectric phase in Zirconia, calculations including III-valent dopants as well as thermal and surface energies for both Zirconia and Hafnia are necessary.
