    Mental health indicators and their lifestyle associations in German students : a gender-specific multivariable analysis

    Background: Statistics show that the number of received psychosocial counselling sessions remains at a constantly high level or has even increased since the COVID-19 pandemic situation in 2020. The objective of this work is to identify factors associated with students’ mental health to improve prevention and promotion in mental health at universities. Methods: The analyses were based on a cross-sectional data set collected by an online survey among 1,842 students from a German University of Applied Sciences in 2014. Descriptive statistics as well as nine different multiple linear regression models were calculated with IBM® SPSS® Statistics software. Mental health indicators used were mental health-related quality of life (mental HRQOL), depression, and anxiety, which were analysed in a gender-specific manner. Results: The analyses showed that the mean of the mental HRQOL score of the SF-36 for the student sample (46.68) was lower than the values for German (48.76) or American (51.34) norm samples. A key finding was the differences in mental health indicators between male and female students. Women reported worse mental health status in comparison to men. Female gender (ß of -.09; p  < 0.01), age (ß of -1.05; p  < 0.01), underweight (ß of -.09; p  < 0.05), smoking (ß of -.10; p  < 0.05) and drug consumption (ß of -.15; p  < 0.001) were negatively associated with mental health indicators. In our sample, a moderate consumption of alcohol within the female population (ß of .12; p  < 0.01) and physical activity within the male sample (ß of .09; p  < 0.05) were positively associated with mental health indicators. Conclusion: The gender-specific differences of students’ mental health and its associations could be an important result for counselling services at universities to adjust methods according to gender. Contrary to the general societal perception, students have lower mental health than a norm sample even before the pandemic. Due to the additional mental stress caused by the pandemic, it can be assumed that mental health problems have increased even more. Universities should therefore pay more attention to the mental health of their students

    Interpolation von Punktbildfunktionen (PSF) im Feld realer optischer Systeme für die Realisierung einer 2D-Bildsimulation

    Die 2D-Bildsimulation stellt eine wertvolle Erweiterung der klassischen Mittel zur Quantifizierung von Aberrationen in einem Optiksimulationsprogramm dar, wodurch man einen Einblick in die visuelle Gesamtwirkung eines optischen Systems erlangen kann. Anders als in Gebieten der Computergrafik möchte man damit eine reale und physikalisch sinnvolle Abbildung unter Berücksichtigung von Beugungsphänomenen und chromatischen Aberrationen realisieren. Den Kern einer solchen Simulation stellt die Methode zur Interpolation von Punktabbildungsfunktionen (PSFen) zwischen diskret abgetasteten Feldpunkten dar. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde die gegenwärtige 2D-Bildsimulation von CODE V® eingehend anhand von zwei repräsentativen optischen Systemen untersucht und eine Nachbildung der praktizierten Interpolationsmethode durchgeführt. Die Resultate der angewandten örtlichen Interpolation von PSF-Graustufenbildern verfügen zumindest unter bestimmten Bedingungen über einen äußerst geringen physikalischen Bezug und sind somit im Rahmen einer Optikentwicklung möglicherweise wertlos oder gar irreführend. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein Lösungsansatz zur Interpolation von PSFen präsentiert, dessen Ergebnisse weit zuverlässiger sind als die von CODE V® angewandte Methode. Das ausgearbeitete Verfahren beruht auf der Interpolation von Wellenfronten des optischen Systems, die in Form von Zernike-Koeffizienten in CODE V® bestimmt und im Anschluss in MATLAB® anhand der Fourier-Optik zu einer PSF in der Bildebene transformiert werden. Interpoliert werden dabei die Werte der jeweiligen Zernike-Koeffizienten, deren Werte an den äquidistant abgetasteten Feldpunkten jeweils die Interpolationsstützstellen bilden. Diese (bi)lineare Interpolation lässt nur marginale Interpolationsartefakte beobachten. Zudem besitzt diese Methode auch die Fähigkeit,zwischen diskreten Wellenlängen sowie Positionen der Objektebene sicher zu interpolieren. Mit der Integration des Lösungsansatzes in die eigene Implementierung der 2D-Bildsimulation gelingt erneut der Nachweis der Zuverlässigkeit mit simulierten mono- und polychromatischen Ergebnisbildern. Rechenzeit stand dabei nicht im Fokus der Arbeit; hier sind große Verbesserungen sowohl möglich als auch nötig.Image simulation in 2D is a valuable extension of the classic methods available for quantifying aberrations in optical simulation software, allowing an impression of the overall visual performance of an optical system. However, unlike in computer graphics, the goal is to achieve a real and physically meaningful image, taking into account diffraction and chromatic aberration effects. The core of this type of image simulation is the method used to interpolate point spread functions (PSFs)between discrete field points where the PSFs have actually been computed. Within this work, the current 2D image simulation available in CODE V® was thoroughly investigated, using two representative optical systems. The interpolation method used in CODE V® was reproduced. The results of the spatial interpolation of PSF grey scale images have little physical relevance, at least in some extreme conditions. Thus, for developing optical systems, this method may be questionable and possibly misleading. Within this work, an alternative method for PSF interpolation is presented, whose results are much more reliable than the method used in CODE V® The alternative interpolation method is based on wave fronts, which are computed in CODE V® as a set of Zernike coefficients, for discrete field points. What is interpolated now between field points are the Zernike coefficients, describing interpolated wave fronts. These bilinearly interpolated wave fronts are then transformed to PSFs in the image plane using Fourier optics, resulting in negligible interpolation artefacts. In addition, the method allows interpolation also between wavelengths and between object distances. By integrating this approach into an own implementation of a 2D image simulation, the reliability of the method is shown using monochromatic and polychromatic images. Computation time was not a focus of this work; here, substantial improvements are both possible and necessary
