Trotz zunehmender öffentlicher Kritik an Mischwasserüberläufen in unsere Gewässer wurde in den letzten 50 Jahren ein funktionierendes System geschaffen, das die Aufgabe des Gewässerschutzes vielfach erfüllt. Neben der Beseitigung von lokalen Schwachstellen im Bestand sind zukünftig bei Erschließungen und Sanierungsgebieten regelkonforme, aber zugleich pragmatische Lösungen zu suchen – sowohl Regenabflüsse zu vermindern als auch deren Verschmutzung zu vermeiden sind vor allem gesellschaftliche Aufgaben
Geo-visualisation of Air-Pollutant Dispersion in Complex Urban Environments using 3D City Models: Insights from High-Resolution Street Canyon Simulation - Concept and First Results
Abstract. Urban air quality poses a significant public health challenge, particularly in complex urban areas like street canyons, where traffic emissions intensify the issue. The limitations of traditional monitoring methods, marked by a narrow scope and poor visualisation, hinder our understanding of pollutant dispersion dynamics, impeding effective air quality management. Consequently, this study explores the synergy of 3D city models and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to analyse air pollutant dispersion in complex urban settings. To enhance geo-visualisation, the research employs the next generation of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) APIs for data delivery. The integration of 3D city models with CFD simulations and geo-visualisation techniques aims to develop an urban digital twin. This digital twin is envisioned to offer valuable insights into the dynamics of air pollutant dispersion within street canyons, thereby informing more effective air quality management strategies
Urban Digital Twins Empowering Energy Transition: Citizen-Driven Sustainable Urban Transformation towards Positive Energy Districts
Abstract. Both citizens and authorities play a crucial role in the successful implementation of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs). However, the current public participation methods often fail to facilitate interactive knowledge production in the context of energy flexibilisation and PEDs for the citizens. To close this gap, the DigiTwins4PEDs project will use an innovative public participation process and further develop energy simulation tools using urban digital twins. These tools could address issues such as energy flexibility strategies, including demand-side management, sector coupling, and energy storage options, among others. To support the public participation process, the urban digital twin platform will be integrated into a living lab concept and implemented in different case study regions to co-design energy flexibilisation strategies with citizens. The ultimate goal is to deliver a best-practice catalogue and an action plan for other cities to implement a community-driven transition to PEDs

Implementing Ethical Considerations into Ai-Supported Student Counselling—a Case Study
Awareness for the need to address ethical considerations in software development is ever-increasing. However, there is little clarity on how and when ethical analysis should be introduced into the development process. Using a case study approach, we argue that ethical analysis should be integrated at a very early stage of software development and requires interdisciplinary cooperation between technical and ethical specialists for it to be fruitful and cost efficient. In order to show this, we analyze the development process of an AI tool under development at the KNIGHT research project of Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences. Ethical challenges faced by the original plans of the tool, the interdisciplinary process of solving these problems, and the technical changes necessary to overcome them are detailed. The technical changes are fundamental and could not have been easily implemented at a later stage of development, highlighting the need for early-on integration of ethical analysis
Impact of the model structure and calibration strategy on baseflow modeling in the German low mountain range
Baseflow is a vital component of the water balance. The fractured hard rock aquifers of the German low mountain range are in danger of increased water stress due to climate change because they react rapidly to deficits in precipitation and groundwater tables decline sharply. Therefore, simulation software must be able to model baseflow accurately. Three soil moisture simulation and two monthly factor-based baseflow models are evaluated using two calibration strategies. Models were calibrated to total flow (S1) or stepwise to baseflow and then total flow (S2). Results were not significantly different for total flow. Regarding baseflow, S2 proved significantly better with median values (S1 calibration, validation | S2 calibration, validation) of SSE (20.3, 20.3 | 13.5, 13.8), LnNSE (0.15, 0.17 | 0.47, 0.34), and PBIAS (27.8, 21.6 | 2.5, −0.8). Parallel linear reservoir proved best at modeling baseflow with a median SSE (S2: 6.1, 5.9), LnNSE (S2: 0.64, 0.71), and PBIAS (S2: 3.8, 3.8). The new modified monthly factor approach is a simple and robust alternative with SSE (13.0, 13.3), LnNSE (0.61, 0.61), and PBIAS (9.8, −8.6). The results are useful regarding selection of baseflow model structure and calibration strategy in low mountain ranges with fractured hard rock aquifers
