Digital Transformation in Organizations from a Portuguese Project Managers perspective: what’s changing?

    No full text
This investigation intends to analyze the changes in the organizations and on the way of work in the context of the digital transformation from a perspective of Portuguese project managers in technology-based companies. We adopted a qualitative multiple case study methodology, using the semi-structured interview and the secondary sources of information as technique of information gathering. Five Portuguese project managers from five technology-based companies, aged between 18 and 113 years (3 small companies and 2 large companies) participated in the study. The results were analyzed considering four categories: contextual, diagnostic, evaluative and strategic. The main results revealed that digital transformation has advantages in the work of the project manager and that these organizations have developed a digital strategy involving different areas of the organization, taking advantage of digital technologies to improve their performance. Some of the advantages are the increase of team productivity and offering customers differentiated services against competition, supported by innovative digital platforms, namely; the promotion of a culture of learning and continuous innovation. Contributions for the management of human resources are discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Effects of using compound or complex strength-power training during in-season in team sports

    No full text
Literature is scarce on how players with poorly and well developed physical qualities respond to different combinations of strength-power training during in-season. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of (i) compound training performed by stronger athletes at different days and (ii) complex training performed by weaker athletes within the same training session. Twenty male handball players were classified as strong or weak according to countermovement jump performance and assigned to a 12-week training programme. Linear sprint, changes of direction, repeated sprint ability and vertical jump capacity were used to assess physical profiles. Compound training performed by stronger players resulted in unclear effects on vertical jump, 20-m and repeated sprint. Likely improvements were found in 10-m sprint (-11.3%; 11.9%). Weaker players who performed complex training presented likely and very likely improvements on vertical jump (13.7%; 5.4%), sprint (10 m, -10.7%; 10.3%; 20 m, -6.0%; 3.4%) and repeated sprint (-4.1%; 3.7%) with moderate to large effect size. The results show that complex and compound strategies are useful in improving the physical profiles of weaker players and maintaining stronger players' capacities during in-season, respectively. Players involved in the same competitive context, even from the same team, may require different strength training strategies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Virtual sports deserve real sports medical attention

    Get PDF
In recent years, virtual sports or 'eSports' have grown exponentially both recreationally and at the professional level. eSports comprise several regulated video games played competitively, using electronic platforms. Some eSports competitions present a structure comparable to traditional sports, and eSports players, even with major skills and mental focus, need preparation and training to thrive. However, little is known about the demands of eSports competitions and continuous training. As the popularity and stakes rise, concerns about the health and emerging risks of eSports participation might arise. Indeed, in the absence of proper descriptive data about the specific characteristics of the eSports population (including factors such as screen time, physical activity, overuse injuries or training environment), effective prevention and care cannot be developed nor provided. Therefore, quality healthcare and prevention strategies are needed. In the current viewpoint, we argue that those involved with Sports Science and Medicine should lead the discussion and reflect on the health effects of eSports participation, providing scientifically-based arguments to better answer to the current eSports professionalism.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Potential Industrial Applications and Commercialization of Microalgae in the Functional Food and Feed Industries: A Short Review

    No full text
Bioactive compounds, e.g., protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, vitamins and minerals, found in commercial form of microalgal biomass (e.g., powder, flour, liquid, oil, tablet, or capsule forms) may play important roles in functional food (e.g., dairy products, desserts, pastas, oil-derivatives, or supplements) or feed (for cattle, poultry, shellfish, and fish) with favorable outcomes upon human health, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiviral effects, as well as prevention of gastric ulcers, constipation, anemia, diabetes, and hypertension. However, scale up remains a major challenge before commercial competitiveness is attained. Notwithstanding the odds, a few companies have already overcome market constraints, and are successfully selling extracts of microalgae as colorant, or supplement for food and feed industries. Strong scientific evidence of probiotic roles of microalgae in humans is still lacking, while scarce studies have concluded on probiotic activity in marine animals upon ingestion. Limitations in culture harvesting and shelf life extension have indeed constrained commercial viability. There are, however, scattered pieces of evidence that microalgae play prebiotic roles, owing to their richness in oligosaccharides-hardly fermented by other members of the intestinal microbiota, or digested throughout the gastrointestinal tract of humans/animals for that matter. However, consistent applications exist only in the dairy industry and aquaculture. Despite the underlying potential in formulation of functional food/feed, extensive research and development efforts are still required before microalgae at large become a commercial reality in food and feed formulation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Occupational safety and health performance indicators in SMEs: A literature review

    No full text
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face greatest difficulty in managing occupational risks compared to large enterprises. Limited resources, little knowledge about risk management process and deficiencies in organizational processes are often pointed in the literature as important obstacles to occupational safety and health (OSH) performance in SMEs. However, external factors can also be of paramount importance, such as the economic crisis. Because under specific scenarios OSH conditions may deteriorate in SMEs, is important to establish effective indicators.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
