Atomically precise signatures of native subsurface As monovacancy defect in GaAs studied by STM imaging and DFT calculations
We conducted scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements and density
functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate surface arsenic vacancies (VAs) and
intrinsic subsurface VAs in GaAs(110), revealing distinct STM features and symmetries
depending on their depth from the surface. A surface VAs appears as a symmetric dark
contrast at the missing As site with estimated size of ~21.8 Å2. In contrast, a secondlayer
VAs exhibits an asymmetric two-lobe darker contrast, due to charge accumulation
in the underlying Ga atoms. A third-layer VAs, however, shows a symmetric “butterflylike”
dark contrast, caused by charge accumulation in the lower layers along with
charge depletion around the central surface As atom. DFT calculations using the
modified Becke-Johnson local density approximation (mbJ-LDA) reveal that VAs in
bulk GaAs introduce slightly dispersed, partially-filled gap states near the conduction
band, confirming previous theoretical predictions. The above findings show key
features to distinguish surface and native subsurface VAs relative to their location from
the surface via STM. Moreover, our findings reveal details into the structural, energetic,
and electronic properties of VAs in bulk GaAs, which can provide valuable insights into
the desired VAs-induced below-band gap excitation in GaAs for terahertz and
optoelectronic device applications.journal articl
Association of Daily Steps with Dynapenia in Community Elderly
ダイナペニアは骨格筋量の低下を伴わない筋力の低下と定義されている。本研究はダイナペニアの有無と身体活動量の関連性を調査した。対象者は福井県三方上中郡若狭町の地域高齢者83名とした。アジアサルコペニアワーキンググループ2019 のサルコペニア診断基準に基づき5 回椅子立ち上がりテスト12 秒以上または握力男性28 ㎏以下,女性18 ㎏以下および骨格筋量の低下を伴わない者をダイナペニアとした。身体活動量と1 日の平均歩数は三軸加速度計を用いて調査した。ダイナペニア群は6 名(7.2%)であった。身体活動量および1日の平均歩数の調査により身体活動量には有意な差は無かったが,1日の平均歩数はダイナペニア群2233 歩,健常群4549 歩で有意に少なくなった。ロジスティック回帰分析では,年齢,性別で調整したダイナペニアの有無と1 日の平均歩数が負に相関した。ダイナペニアの有無は1日の平均歩数の少なさとの関連を示唆した。Dynapenia is defined as the loss of muscle strength without the loss of skeletal muscle mass. This study investigated the relationship between dynapenia and physical activity. Eighty-three elderly adults from Wakasa Town, Mikata-Kaminaka County, Fukui Prefecture, participated in the study. Based on the sarcopenia diagnostic criteria of the Asian Sarcopenia Working Group 2019, those who had a five-chair stand-up test of 12 seconds or longer, a grip strength of ≤28 kg (men) and ≤18 kg (women), and no loss of skeletal muscle mass were considered to have dynapenia. The amount of physical activity and the average number of steps taken per day were assessed using a triaxial accelerometer. Six patients (7.2%) were included in the dynapenia group. The amount of physical activity and the average number of steps taken per day were not significantly different; however, the average number of steps taken per day was significantly lower in the dynapenia group (2233 steps) than in the normal group (4549 steps). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed dynapenia was negatively associated with the mean daily number of steps adjusted for age and sex. Dynapenia was associated with fewer average daily steps.departmental bulletin pape

Unit Design of Chemical Bonding Field for Students to Acquire Knowledge on Their Own: Classification Activities by Material Properties in High School Chemistry
2022年度から施行された高等学校学習指導要領(平成30年告示)では、探究的な学習の流れが重視され、生徒たちが「課題を解決したり、新たな課題を発見したりする経験を可能な限り増加させていくことが重要」であると記された。高校生の生徒たちが中学校理科までに獲得した情報を活用することで、高等学校『化学基礎』・『化学』で学ぶ新たな知識を獲得できる単元を開発し、実践した。具体的には、『化学基礎』の「化学結合」の単元において、「結合の性質」→「物質の性質」という演繹的な順序から、「物質の性質」→「結合の性質」という帰納的な順序へと見直した。さらに、物質の性質を比較し、物質を分類する活動を、単元の導入に探究的な活動として取り入れた。本報では、単元開発の内容と、探究的な分類活動の授業実践について報告する。この実践は、福井大学大学院連合教職開発研究科の必修科目「学校インターンシップ」の中での取り組みとして、福井県内高等学校で行ったものである。departmental bulletin pape
Factors leading to diverging instructor perspectives in an EMI intercultural communication university course in Japan
This exploratory paper examines the factors that led to diverging experiences that two instructors of the same intercultural communication course (ICC) at a Japanese national
university have encountered when planning, teaching, and assessing student performance. The course, situated within a Global and Community Studies program, is taught using English as the medium of instruction (EMI) and aims to foster cross-cultural interaction skills among Japanese and international students. This is considered a cornerstone course to prepare students for working in an increasingly intercultural local community. Therefore, ICC is a compulsory course for all second-year students of the program. This paper explains the course design, development, and materials before introducing the background and identity of the two instructors, as this is one of the factors that was found to be more significant to the diverging experiences mentioned above. Then, factors running in parallel will also be discussed: the number of course takers and their background (e.g., nationality and previous experiences with cross-cultural communication), their English proficiency, their customization of the class content, in addition to three minor but noteworthy influences. Finally, this paper will explore the potential of engaging in research in the development of intercultural communication skills of Japanese university students within the context of an EMI course (which focuses on content and skill learning, as opposed to, for example, a CLIL – content and language integrated learning – course where content
and language are scaffolded in parallel). While the authors are aware that measuring learning outcomes in intercultural communication education presents some challenges, the institutional setting is deemed appropriate for a case study, and the factors introduced in this paper can be alleviated to establish a research design featuring a test group and a control group.
