A STUDY ON THE CHANGE IN CHILDREN’S PERCEPTION OF SCENERY BEFORE AND AFTER THE INTRODUCTION OF SCHOOL BUSES
The purpose of this study was to clarify the differences in how children perceive landscapes when they walk to school or when they take the bus. The survey method is a workshops targeting children who were switching from walking to taking the bus. The results showed that students who commute by bus tend to recall natural objects further away than students who commute by foot, and that these recalled places tend to be concentrated near the bus stop. Therefore, bus stops need to be developed as important bases for interacting with the local community.journal articl

Temperature-induced localized exciton dynamics in inorganic CsPbX3 (X=I, Br, Cl) perovskite nanocrystals
The exceptional luminescent properties of inorganic halide perovskites have recently garnered significant attention. This study comprehensively investigates the temperature dependence of the anomalous behavior of localized excitons in inorganic CsPbX3 (X = I, Br, and Cl) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). A quantitative model has been developed to determine the photoluminescence (PL) peak energy and PL linewidth through a broad temperature range (from 10 K to 300 K) using Monte Carlo simulation of exciton relaxation and hopping processes. Incorporating temperature induced bandgap expansion allows for a quantitative fit of our computational model to the experimental findings. The PL peak energies of all CsPbX3 NCs exhibit a blue shift due to the localization of excitons in higher energy states at elevated temperatures. On moving from X = I to Br to Cl, the rate of bandgap expansion decreases with temperature, which indicates that the ionic bond between cation and anion becomes stronger, resulting in less shifting in PL peak energy. The PL linewidth is significantly influenced by thermal disorder, resulting in a noticeable increase in the full width half maximum (FWHM) as the temperature rises. Additionally, it has been observed that excitons in deeper localized states are minimal in CsPbBr3 and CsPbCl3. This study is important in understanding and optimizing the performance, tuning the emission characteristics, and improving the reliability of cesium halide perovskite-based devices.journal articl
Application of magma-formation experiments using a portable clay cooking stove to science classes in Junior High School
High-Efficiency Hemispherical Short-Cavity Continuous-Wave Yb:YAG Laser by High-Intensity Pumping
Improving the efficiency of lasers without complex structures, expensive elements, and precise optimization will lead to cost reductions and increased practicality. Here, it is first shown theoretically that the dependence of the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency on the laser beam waist (minimum laser spot) radii for a Yb:YAG laser with a simple structure decreases extremely with increasing pump intensity and efficiency. Not only is the optimum range for highest efficiency wide, but even if the radii are doubled, the efficiency decreases by only a few percentage points or less at the maximum pump intensity of 450 kW/cm2. Therefore, it is possible to achieve sufficiently high efficiencies without precise optimization by high-intensity pumping. In the experiment, at a pump wavelength of 940 nm, corresponding to pump-level pumping, the maximum efficiency was 75.2% for the incident pump power at the corresponding maximum intensity. On the other hand, at a pump wavelength of 968 nm, corresponding to direct pumping of the upper laser level, the maximum efficiency was 76.0% at about 60% of the maximum. Although the pump focus is slightly off from the optimum, these efficiencies are close to the theoretical maximum at the corresponding pump intensities. Since no complex gain medium is used, there is almost no efficiency reduction due to parasitic oscillations, despite the high pum intensities. These results demonstrate the high practicality of high-intensity pumping for high-efficiency lasers.journal articl
Project-Based Learning for Community Revitalization at a Japanese National University:A Qualitative Analysis of Student Experiences
From 2017 to 2024, the author co-designed and facilitated Project-Based Learning (PBL) courses focused on community revitalization for second-year students at a Japanese national university. These courses promoted Fukui’s culture and history to domestic and international audiences. With upcoming curriculum changes in 2024, the PBL course is undergoing significant revisions. This paper reflects briefly on the previous six years of PBL before focusing on the 2023-2024 course, in which the author collaborated with a community organization in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture. In this project, seven students were divided into two teams: one developed disaster prevention materials for non-Japanese residents in partnership with the local city hall, while the other created social media content to attract international tourists. Data from questionnaires completed at the start, midpoint, and end of the course provide qualitative
insights into students’ evolving experiences in Cultural Engagement and Local Knowledge, Leadership and Team Dynamics, and Mentorship and Role Differentiation. This analysis
highlights key learning outcomes, including shifts in students’ roles, interactions with mentors, and skills gained. In conclusion, the author will try to connect these themes to create a preliminary theory, often a feature of grounded theory research, to describe the experiences of the students and how they developed in this PBL course.departmental bulletin pape
