    Online Versus Face-to-Face Education

    Get PDF
This paper explores the benefits and disadvantages of online and face-to-face modes of education. Throughout the paper, I discuss whether online courses provide the same level of education as face-to-face courses without the nurturing, attentive, and physical aspects. Based on extensive reading on the topic, as well drawing on my personal experience, I argue that online and face-to-face education can have both positive and negative effects on studentsâ learning. However, I conclude that online courses do not provide the same level of education that face-to-face courses do, based on the nurturing, attentive, and often physical aspects that traditional education provides. I provide what I hope is an argument that will help others appreciate that face-to-face courses provide a more effective and helpful way for students to have a successful academic career

Cannabis-Related Content in North American Post-Secondary Curricula: A Scoping Review

    Get PDF
On 11 August 2016, the Canadian government announced the new Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) outlining reasonable uses of cannabis for medical purposes. Educators teaching cannabis-related content face new challenges, as this legalization requires a shift away from a focus on substance abuse towards incorporating economic, social, and health promotion aspects. I report on what curricula incorporating the concept of cannabis are offered by post-secondary institutions as well as how and for what purpose this content is offered. To do this, I conducted a scoping review of published and grey literature to determine the extent of the available research and content related to the concept of cannabis in post-secondary curricula in North America. Online search engines and multiple databases were mined for relevant data. I found that peer-reviewed nursing articles generally emphasize teaching cannabis in terms of substance abuse treatment rather than knowledge about medical cannabis. In English-speaking Canadian universities/colleges that have a nursing school, various cannabis-related courses are being developed. These include different disciplines such as pharmacology, agriculture, and marketing and are delivered in the format of courses, workshops/seminars, and public presentations in classrooms or online. The results of this review suggest that a limited number of courses about medical cannabis are being offered in post-secondary institutions in North America. As legislation changes continue to impact post secondary education, curricula must be adapted to meet the new requirements

Therapy dogs on campus: An exploration of how dog therapy services affect undergraduate studentsâ stress levels

University can be stressful for many undergraduates. Fortunately, there are various stress reduction strategies, including weekly dog therapy sessions, offered at Thompson Rivers University. This study investigated the effects of dog therapy on students via a self-reported stress survey. Students in a control group (n= 98), who did not visit the therapy dogs, and a test group (n= 108), who did, provided data on their stress level and various other factors. Students in the test group reported their stress levels before and after participating in a dog therapy session by circling a number on our stress scale, determining their stress scores. Tests of association were used to examine relationships between stress scores before visiting the dogs and various other factors. Two-sample t-tests were used to compare stress scores for students in the control group to those in the test group prior to the dog therapy, and paired t-tests were used to compare the stress scores of students in the test group before and after dog therapy. There appeared to be an association between course load and the stress score of students in the test group before using the dog therapy (p= 0.018). There was no difference in stress score between students in the test group before dog therapy and those in the control group (p= 0.2771); there was, however, a significant difference in the average stress scores of students in the test group before and after they visited the therapy dogs (p= 0.0000); the results suggest that the dog therapy was successful in decreasing stress scores among students in the test group

What are the benefits of studying abroad according to an international student?

In a day and age where technology and education is constantly advancing for third world countries, many wonder if studying abroad still holds any benefits as students can now find the same level of education in their home countries as they did abroad. Despite this enhancement in third world countries, studying abroad still has positive results as there are many aspects involved in the process of studying abroad other than the level of education. For example, experiences attained, friendships made, exposure to new cultures, teaching methods, books and ways of life are all essential for the growth of an individual and all these aspects can be acquired from studying abroad. However, there are some negative aspects of studying abroad. For example, being homesick and struggling to cope in a new environment, but these are all challenges that can easily be overcome as technology allows students to keep in touch with family members. Due to this, the proâs of studying abroad outweigh the cons and that is why studying abroad is still a viable optio

    Invisibility of choice

The purpose of this essay was to explore how dams have affected and shaped the town of Revelstoke, BC. In this piece, stories of long-term residents are juxtaposed with those of more recent immigrants to raise universal questions surrounding how all actions, big or small, field-planting or dam-building, resound with both benefits and detriments. Within the historical context of dam-building in a small mountain town, food security provides an especially vivid lens with which to consider our personal values as well as our obligations as local and global citizens. This creative nonfiction essay encapsulates both the authorâs research and personal experiences

Rat Infestation: An Analysis of the Black Rat (Rattus rattus) Outbreak around Kamloops, BC

    Get PDF
Infestations of certain organisms occur when their living conditions are highly favourable. A species that is capable of quickly adjusting to a new environment, has a high reproductive output, no significant predators, and access to abundant resources will flourish. In particular, the Black Rat (Rattus rattus) population has increased rapidly within British Columbia over the last four years. The increase is currently understudied and greater research is needed on the specific distribution of rats and the influences on their population outbreak. Obtaining more knowledge about these factors could be the first step in controlling their population. Using information collected from recent news articles, testimonials, and pest control companies, I have conducted a preliminary study on the Black Rat around Kamloops, British Columbia. This project highlights some known locations of the Black Rat and, additionally, describes their general behaviour and characteristics. I also suggest a theory on the Black Ratâs origin in Kamloops. The goal of this study is to provide a starting point for future research on this topic, including potential control of the species in this location
