Finite element analysis of a tensegrity joint model for the use in dynamic hand orthoses
Many current dynamic hand orthoses use single degree of freedom joints, such as hinge joints. Consequently, these orthoses can only partially replicate the complex, multi-axis range of motion of the hand. To overcome this limitation, one approach is to use prestressed compliant structures as the basis for orthoses. In order to be able to map the dynamic influences on the orthosis as well as to simulate everyday use, this article provides an overview of this orthosis concept and the most important aspects in the development of such an orthosis including the results of the modal analysis. Based on these theoretical investigations, the presented methodological approach can be used to develop initial prototypes of tensegrity-based hand orthoses
ML based Evaluation Methodology for Learning Path Recommender Systems
In education, recommender systems can provide students with personalized learning materials based on their preferences. When comparing various recommendation algorithms, the main question is, which algorithm provides the most suitable recommendations for each student. Answering this question requires a quantitative evaluation methodology (i.e. a concrete metric) for ranking the results of (even non-deterministic) recommender systems. While there is already literature on this topic, the uniqueness of our approach lies in the application of machine learning: we deploy a likelihood based analysis via Hidden Markov Models named Aiakos. With this strategy, we aim to provide data-driven insights about accuracy and stability of recommendations towards a more reasonable selection of the appropriate recommender system. The training data for the Hidden Markov Models is collected from 80 students. Data from another 26 students is then used to discuss the behavior of our evaluation procedure considering a single recommendation as well as the results from 100 recommendations. Furthermore, the proposed concept allows to be applied to other domains as well
Experimental investigation at the exterior wall-floor joint with partially supported slabs
The objective of the extensive experimental investigations at the exterior wall-floor joint on a scale of 1:1 on highly thermally insulating clay unit masonry was to record the interaction between the acting axial force and the resulting slab rotation as a result of defined slab fixed end moments. The focus of this test series was on the influence of the nonlinear system behaviour at different axial force-moment combinations caused by the gaping of the horizontal joints as well as the contact zone between slab and masonry.
With knowledge of the moment-rotation interaction as a function of the axial force of the wall, a numerical model can be developed with regard to the nonlinear system behaviour. Since the angle of rotation of the slab is of major importance in this respect, the structural design of a reinforced concrete slab is dispensed with in the test and replaced by a flexurally rigid solid steel bracket. This has the decisive advantage that the rotation of the steel bracket can be precisely detected by means of optical deformation measurement (digital image correlation) and directly assigned to the existing axial force-moment combinations. The evaluation of the tests has shown that the dominant nonlinear effect is essentially due to the gaping of the horizontal joints in the exterior wall-floor joint. During the test execution, the proportionality limit between the bracket moment and the bracket rotation could be successively increased with increasing load level regardless of the previous nonlinear system behaviour
Explainable information retrieval in the audit domain
Conversational agents such as Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini assist users with complex search tasks but often generate misleading or fabricated references. This undermines trust, particularly in high-stakes domains such as medicine and finance. Explainable information retrieval (XIR) aims to address this by making search results more transparent and interpretable. While most XIR research is domain-agnostic, this paper focuses on auditing -- a critical yet underexplored area. We argue that XIR systems can support auditors in completing their complex task. We outline key challenges and future research directions to advance XIR in this domain
Face-wise prediction of sheet-metal drawability using graph neural networks
The early design phase of deep-drawn structural components involves time-consuming iterative development. Traditional drawability assessments rely on finite element simulations, which are computationally expensive and slow the design process. Alternative machine learning (ML) approaches show promise in accelerating this process but face challenges with existing methods. Existing low-dimensional ML models only provide global predictions without identifying specific geometric regions prone to failure. High-dimensional models provide local predictions but require significant amounts of training data. We propose a data-driven approach leveraging graph neural networks (GNNs) for face-wise drawability prediction of sheet metal components in their computer-aided design (CAD) representation. Our method aims to bridge the gap between the computational efficiency of ML and the spatial resolution of simulation by providing face-wise insight into potential failure regions. This study utilises a dataset of parametric U-channel geometries with variability in both geometry and topology. Ground-truth labels are generated using inverse analysis simulations. Geometric entities are represented through the use of UV parameterisations, whereby 3D surfaces are mapped into 2D space to facilitate geometric encoding. Concurrently, the topological relationships are captured using a face adjacency graph. To address data scarcity, we evaluate how different amounts of training data affect model performance and perform ablation studies to analyse the impact of different CAD representation features. Our results show that the proposed approach achieves high accuracy even with limited training data. In addition, the ablation studies provide insights into the most critical CAD features, guiding future research. These results highlight the potential of our GNN to predict face-wise drawability in the early design phase
