Review and appraisal of research evidences generated to harness the demographic dividend in Ethiopia

    No full text
Ethiopia has been experiencing demographic transitions as a result of the country’s efforts to reduce fertility and mortality rates through improving socio-economic changes. Achieving faster socio-economic growth requires transforming the young population into productive human capital. The objective of this critical review is to access and evaluate evidence-based efforts made in Ethiopia to harness the demographic dividend. The Article has used data from published research findings on specific topics, development plans, and program reports. A range of legal frameworks, policies, and programs related to health, education, economic development, good governance, and women's empowerment have been developed and implemented to improve the well-being of the population. Though positive and evidence-based achievements in education, health, fertility decrement, and economic reform were obtained, maintaining the quality of institutions and a lack of stockholder commitment have severely challenged the country, and as a result, changes were not extensive compared to other model countries in demographic dividend triumph. Therefore, continued efforts have to be made to reduce population growth and improve the accessibility and quality of socio-economic sectors so as to harness the demographic dividend and thereby change the living conditions of society

    No full text
Social sciences subject at the JHS level is one of the subjects that are taught in an integrated manner at the level. This integrated learning raises its own problems in social science learning. The purpose of this research is to identify the problems in social studies learning. This research uses qualitative methods. The informants used were teachers and students from seven JHS. Data were collected through interviews, observation and documentation. The research data were analysed using descriptive analysis. Based on the results of the study, four problems can be identified, namely disruptive behaviour of students, lack of learning facilities and infrastructure, teachers lack of understanding of materials outside their field of knowledge and learning methods that are less varied. The disruptive behavior of students identified is wandering and playing around when learning takes place, difficult to manage, not doing the assigned tasks, making noise in the classroom, not paying attention, and drowsiness. Meanwhile, learning facilities and infrastructure that are considered still lacking are books and learning media. Teachers also find it difficult to understand subject matter outside their field and the learning methods used are less varied because they mostly use the lecture method

    No full text
Background: Healthcare workers' perception and vaccine use are significant elements that are consistently linked to people's acceptance and lessened hesitation/aversion that will lead to increased vaccine usage and vaccination schedule adherence. Objectives: To determine the perceptions of healthcare workers working in the medical city teaching hospitals on the COVID-19vaccine, Baghdad, Iraq, 2021. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using a convenient sample of healthcare workers working in the medical city teaching hospitals, Baghdad, Iraq. The Data was collected from Feb to May 2021 using a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire was broken up into three partss: part 1 asked about sociodemographic traits, part 2 asked about opinions on the COVID-19 vaccine, and part 3 asked about potential ways to promote the immunisation in the future as well as obstacles to getting it. Results: The overall number of participants in the research was 312; 65% were females, 37% were between the ages of 30-39, and one-third were medical practitioners. 54% of those polled had a history of COVID-19 infection. Less than half of the individuals (48%) elected to acquire the vaccination whenever it was offered. When it becomes available, 26% of the participants think the COVID-19 vaccination is safe, and 25% think it will be successful. Social media received the greatest reports of knowledge on the COVID-19 vaccine (57%), followed by official websites of international health organisations and news outlets including the US CDC and WHO (46.8%). Twenty-nine percent of participants felt the vaccination may prevent COVID-19 problems, and 92% advocated for a vigorous public awareness campaign regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. Being a doctor is substantially linked with an increased incidence of vaccination uptake in the binary logistic regression (OR 7.2, 95% CI 2.67 -19.66, P<0.001). Age, gender, education level, and past infection history were not statistically significant (p > 0.05) other variables. Conclusions: The total acceptability percentage of the COVID-19 vaccination among healthcare personnel was less than 50%. To build and keep the public's trust in COVID-19 vaccines, healthcare workers must be ready to use a science- and evidence-based method that looks at the safety and effectiveness of vaccines in the community

    No full text
The number of patients with cholelithiasis and endocrine pathology increase at eldery age. The patient’s age over 60 years is one of the risk factors of complications after cholecystectomy. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of endocrine disorders on immediate results of surgical treatment of elderly patients with cholelithiasis. Materials & methods. 295 patients with cholelithiasis were operated on: 107 (36.3%) patients over 60 years (main group) and 188 (63.7%) patients younger than 60 years (control group). Results & discussion. The correlation between the age of the patients and severity of gallbladder’s inflammation was determined (r=0.176; p=0.002). The choledocholithiasis was diagnosed in 14 (13.1%) cases in the main group and in seven (3.7%) cases in the control group (p=0.003). Endocrine disorders were indicated at elderly patients more often (81.3% vs 67.7%; p=0.011). Open and conversion operations were performed at patients over 60 years more often (30.8% vs 9.0%; p<0.001). 14 (13.1%) patients of the main group and six (3.2%) patients of control group had postoperative complications (p=0.001). The hospital stay of elderly patients was longer (Me=10.0 days vs Me=8.0 days; p<0.001). The following correlations of elderly patients were established: between severity of gallbladder’s inflammation and waist circumference (r=0.239; p=0.013), between severity of gallbladder’s inflammation and the level of glucose (r=0.218; p=0.024), between severity of gallbladder’s inflammation and concentration of calcium (r=- 0.450; p<0.001); between the rate of purulent-inflammatory postoperative complications and the level of thyrotropic hormone (r=0.273; p=0.008), between the rate of purulent-inflammatory postoperative complications and hyperglycemia (r=0.211; p=0.029), between the rate of purulentinflammatory postoperative complications and open cholecystectomy (r=0.235; p=0.015); between hospital stay and waist circumference (r=0.197; p=0.047), between hospital stay and concentration of thyrotropic hormone (r=0.304; p=0.010), thyrotropic hormone and the level of calcium (r=-0.250; p=0.022). Conclusion. The endocrine disorders complicate the course of cholelithiasis at elderly patients that is accompanied by the increase of rates of postoperative complications and hospital stay.
