Modelling and Multi-Objective Optimization of a Building Heating Generation System: A case study of Hechingen, Germany
Nowadays, the world is facing major environmental problems such as climate change and energy scarcity. If we consider only European countries, Heating and cooling industry accounts for more than half of the total EU’s energy consumption. And about 75% of the heat is generated by using fossil fuels. Therefore, the major non-renewable energy sources are depleting at the rapid rate and at the same time also producing the climate-changing greenhouse gases.
To achieve the climate change objectives, optimised and efficient use of the energy and the decarbonisation of the heating systems are some of the critical steps.
The investigation process in this thesis involves the modelling and modifying the case study heating system by using Energy Plus and Design-Builder whole building energy simulation software. It also includes the investigation of the three different possible renewable and non-renewable solutions to optimize the current heating system and analyse their effects in terms of total energy consumption (Gas and Electricity consumption) Economic benefits, environmental and other benefits.
With the detail and adequate data inputs modelling and desired modifications has been done to the heating system and the building properties. The annual simulation has been performed to all the three cases and the results have been analysed.
The outcome of the analysis of the results shows a significant improvement in overall energy and electricity consumption. Also provides a detailed insight into the total economical investment needed in all three cases and simple payback periods for the investments. And Most importantly the results replicate the environmental benefits such as a considerable reduction in the overall emissions of greenhouse and other toxic gases

Motivating children to eat vegetables by enhancing meals with digital media
Digital media is finding its way into all parts of life, even eating. The gamification of food is experimented with, mainly for recreational purposes. But it could also be used to achieve a different goal. In this work, an approach to motivating children to eat and like vegetables more is explored. First, the basic perception of vegetables by children is examined and various ideas for games are explored with Cooperative Inquiry. These can be grouped into three categories: building, challenge and randomness. Possible prototypes have been discussed in form of text. A building game has been tested and it had a positive effect on the perception of vegetables of the participating children.
However, only few children were available to work with, making further studies necessary
Influence of long-term organic and conventional farming on soil microbial properties
In order to find out how different farming system influence microbial biomass and therefore influence the long-term soil fertility and soil quality, this study analyzed the impacts of conventional integrated and organic farming systems on soil microbiological parameters using soil samples from the DOK long-term field experiment (Switzerland). Farmyard manure fertilizer is applied to bio-dynamic (D), bio-organic (O) and conventional farming system (K) with two different intensities. Besides, there are a conventional mineral fertilizer received system (M) and an unfertilized control plot (U). The chloroform fumigation extraction (CFE) method and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) test were applied for detection and quantification of soil microbial biomass along with some other tests in physical, chemical and biological aspects. Soil pH tends to increase by applying farmyard manure. Metabolic quotient (qCO 2 ) revealed a lower level in the manured system though there was no significant difference between conventional and organic system. On one hand, D treatment achieved the highest values regarding microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, and the highest gene copies number of detected microbial domains. On the other hand, higher concentration of microbial biomass sodium, potassium, manganese, silicon, nickel and zinc were found in M and K system. Contrary to expectation, the soil organic matter content between different treatments had only a little difference. In general, each tested soil quality parameter was affected by the type and quantity of fertilizer used to a different extent, among which the soil microbiological parameters showed more pronounced difference compared with soil physical parameter, pH and soil organic matter content. In short, organic farming system had greater potential to maintain soil fertility and improve soil quality than conventional farming system in the long term; while the comparison between two organic systems emphasized the beneficial influence from applying compost manure and bio-dynamic additives
Gender pay gap and women's representation in managerial positions - The cases of Australian and German managers' remuneration and gender allocation
Women in managerial positions are still underrepresented and receive lower remuneration than male managers. The thesis aims at identifying factors which have an impact on managers' unbalanced gender presence and pay. A comparative country case study examines the situation in Australia and Germany. Results show that women's high share in part-time employment, tradition, their choice of profession and behavior (influenced by stereotypes) have a significant impact on women's earnings and career advancement. Existing policies in both countries that demand equal treatment of genders in the work environment are criticized for lack of effectiveness. Although measures combating gender inequality have been improving female managers' situation, a balanced share of women and men in management and equal pay can only be achieved if the perception of societies with regard to gender roles and stereotypes conduct a structural change towards an egalitarian gender role concept

LIDAR and RADAR Sensors in Passenger Vehicles
Automotive RADAR and LIDAR are two examples of sensor technologies used to observe the environment and detect objects surrounding the host vehicle, in order to enable ADAS. Naturally, the use of sensors in order to enable systems intended to protect and support the driver or improve their comfort entails stringent requirements; not only in terms of performance, but reliability and robustness as well. This has led to the continued development of sensor technologies, with developers seeking to additionally provide more compact and cost-effective alternatives to surrounding sensing; autonomous driving being the end goal, therefore entailing stricter requirements. Although both RADAR and LIDAR sensors are used for the same purpose, i.e. measuring the radial distance towards a target and determining its velocity relative to the host vehicle, they differ with regards to their functionalities, components, operation and various other aspects, leading to individual strengths and weaknesses. For example, RADAR is known for its impressive detection range, whereas LIDAR is known for its enhanced accuracy and resolution. These contrasting characteristics therefore indicate that either sensor may be preferred over the other in certain situations; perhaps in which one may perform better than the other, or due to other factors and aspects. This paper aims to analyse and compare the two sensor technologies and their use in passenger vehicles with respect to these various factors and aspects, in order to provide an insight into different cases in which one may be more suitable than the other. In general, a single sensor cannot definitively achieve all automotive requirements within all situations. Thus, a combination of sensors is recommended, in order to benefit from their individual strengths and ensure continuous system functionality and availability to detect the surrounding environment
