Participatory Virtual Reality. Immersion and presence in digital platforms for serious topics.

    No full text
Energy is one of the most important components of our lives. Nevertheless, it is still considered an abstract concept for a great majority of the population. Energy is also responsible for most of the environmental problems we are facing nowadays, therefore, we require more than ever, and by any necessary means, to bring this concept closer to our daily life, not only from a dimension of knowledge, also from those related to our behavior and attitude towards it. This study aims to explore Virtual Reality social platforms as a promising means of communication to address environmental issues. More specifically, to understand their potential to generate participation cultures around serious issues, understanding participation culture as the set of activities, through which people collectively shape a space for expression and learning. For this purpose, a research was conducted analyzing three Virtual Reality social apps (VRChat, Rec Room, and AltSpaceVR) to identify —under the perspective of Jenkins’ Convergence Culture— the existing activities and behaviors shaping participatory cultures inside of the platforms. A second research was conducted based on the observation of the main components of the platforms to use them as a reference for the conceptual development of a VR app to present the strategic plan of the European Commission in a participatory environment

    No full text
This thesis deals with the problem of missing research on market analysis in the specific healthcare market of implantable medical devices. The thesis is done in collaboration with the medical device company, FEG Textiltechnik mbH, which produces medical meshes used in hernia repair. To deal with the problem, the market of mplantable medical devices in the healthcare sector as well as market analysis tools were analysed on the basis of a literature analysis. On the basis of these information a good approach was developed and tested in a case study including two test phases. One is a comparison with a market analysis from the collaborating company, FEG Textiltechnik mbH, while the other one is a theoretical example of a market analysis on the Australian market for the previously named company. The developed good approach aims at a market entry in a foreign market. The case studies showed that the good approach has a valuable potential for companies in the industry of implantable medical devices. However, some points were falsely included, which would have been better fit at later stages of the market entry. However, the good approach can be used by companies in the industry, due to its broad fit and can be further optimised with real world applications or tests and can be used outside of the industry after some modifications

    No full text
Ziel – Die Corona-Pandemie zwingt viele arbeitstätige Personen ins Home-Office.

Our everyday is ruled by transporting data across the globe. It is unimaginable not being able to communicate around the world nowadays. It is not trivial to find suitable legal grounds for transferring data out of the European Union. The European Commission must declare a country as safe to be able to transfer data in this specific country. It is necessary to follow this principle not to violate any data protection laws. Since the 16th of July 2020 it is not allowed to transfer any data into the United States using the “Privacy Shield” as a legal safeguard due to the judgment of the European Court. There are still methods for legitimizing data transfers such as ”Binding Corporate Rules (BCR’s)” or “Standard contractual clauses”. Those well-known legal safeguards are only available for transferring data into the United States if “additional measures” were taken according to the European Court. To this day no official instance announced what those “additional measures” could be. This bachelor thesis will analysis the problems a possible “additional measure” must face. To achieve this goal the method of literature review will be used. Many older and newer professional article, books, laws and jurisprudence will be researched and analysed to an- ticipate the needs for a “additional measure”. Since the European Court complained in its jurisprudence about the lack of data security due to the enhanced possibilities of the US intelligence authorities inside the United States a possible outcome of this bachelor thesis could be the need to encrypt every data that is been send to the United States. Other possibilities could be to transfer the place where the data is processed into the European Union

Degradation of the herbicide glyphosate in the presence of a second herbicide MCPA as a chemical stressor in agricultural soil

    No full text
Due to the common agricultural practice of mixing herbicides as well as the long persistence of certain herbicide residues, combinations of herbicides and their residues are often found in soil. These chemicals exert stress on soil microorganisms, affecting the biodegradation of herbicides. There has been little research examining herbicide degradation in the presence of another herbicide from the perspective of stress response using carbon-use efficiency (CUE) to quantify the modified metabolic processes. We investigated, in a 25-day incubation experiment, the effects of the herbicide 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA), as an additional chemical stressor for soil microbes, on the degradation of glyphosate, by determining the 13C-labelled glyphosate-derived CO2 (G-derived CO2), 13C-labelled glyphosate incorporated into microbial biomass (G-derived Cmic), and finally the CUE. We observed statistically higher G-derived CO2 in the combined herbicide treatment compared to the treatment with only glyphosate. The G-derived Cmic was lower in the combined treatment than in the glyphosate only treatment, but the difference was not statistically significant. The CUE of soil microorganisms was lower in the combined treatment, but the results were not significant. Despite the statistical insignificance, a clear trend exists that suggests a more catabolic microbial metabolism under stress induced by the presence of a second herbicide MCPA

The free market introduced opportunities of exchanging goods and benefits from cheaper labor in other countries. Economy grew, but the outsource in developing countries has also shown its negative sites. For decades, the human rights violations in supply chains are alarming and workers are fighting for their fundamental rights. In order to improve the social impact by large companies, the EU introduced the Non-Financial Reporting Directive. Non-financial reporting occupied an important place during the years and became a required regulation in 2018. Nonetheless, the reporting still lacks transparency and rightful disclosure on human rights which is why an additional Supply Chain Act is on the way. This study investigates the non-financial reports of four European leading apparel companies with regard to their disclosure on human rights in supply chains. With the help of MAXQDA, qualitative research is performed within the timeframe 2016 to 2019. The aim is to find how the mandatory disclosure of the NFRD influenced the supply chain of the apparel industry. The results in 2018 show that the transparency in supply chains increased and was addressed most with distinctive implementations, achievements and goals and the wording in the reports changed also in a positive way. This thesis aimed to be an enrichment to this research field by elaborating the different perspectives, recent developments and challenges and the work which still needs to be done. But also to give an insight on four well-known companies and their influence to report on human rights in supply chains in their favor depending on the mandatory regulations. Key words: Non-Financial Reporting Directive, apparel industry, Human rights violations, European Union, Supply Chain Act, mandatory disclosur

Technological Implementation According to the Market Needs in the Elderly Care Industry

    No full text
In Germany, there are almost 15,000 nursing care services that collect information about people in need of care on a daily basis. At present, elderly homes use manual processes for data collection, which leads to poor data quality, considerable inefficiency and burden on the caregiving staff. This thesis describes the current market situation and proposes a technological solution on how to improve the quality, effectivity, and efficiency of the elderly care sector by using data collection and utilisation techniques. Moreover, it justifies the advantages of technological usage, which assists the caregiving staff in relieving the burden of daily tasks and, importantly, helps to collect high-quality data that could be used to do predictive analysis and automate the monotonous processes involved in the elderly homes. A well-documented fully functional digital application prototype was developed and tested by the elderly health industry related individuals of different age groups. The digitisation of the data collection process played a significant role in the collection of high-quality data. Furthermore, the results indicate that usage of that data has a direct correlation with the emergency response time, which could be reduced by almost half. However, further research is required to improve the predictive analysis system and the user experience of the application

Influence of Cryptocurrencies on the Economy: A Potential-Analysis of Bitcoin as an Alternative Currency

    No full text
“Right now, Bitcoin feels like the Internet before the browser” (Casares, 2020). This quote sums up most of the current thoughts on the phenomenon of a ground-breaking invention from 2008 by Satoshi Nakamoto since a major part of the world’s population is still missing out on sophisticated knowledge about it. Especially in times of digitalization, it is of enormous value to be informed about current developments in technology. This thesis aims to evaluate the future development of money, especially if Bitcoin has the potential to totally replace conventional currencies. Furthermore, the strengths and shortcomings of Bitcoin will be discussed. It also reaches to determine characteristics for a currency’s long-term success and which of those characteristics are fulfilled by Bitcoin. To answer the research question if Bitcoin has the potential to be an alternative currency and to test the developed hypotheses, pertinent literature is reviewed and an empirical study consisting of expert interviews which are examined using a qualitative structured content analysis method, are conducted. Afterwards, the results are critically discussed. The results of this thesis reveal that Bitcoin has the potential to become an alternative currency because it fulfills most of the criteria a currency needs to meet to be successful in the long run. Furthermore, it is evident that Bitcoin still faces vast barriers and needs to overcome enormous obstacles, which shifts the time horizon for becoming a success somewhere in the farther future. Additionally, apart from the development of cryptocurrencies, it is shown that money in general, will flow much more digitally in the short run. Besides that, this thesis offers insights about the promising future of Bitcoin’s underlying core technology, the Blockchain, in various fields of application
