From the “reception trap” to the “denied reception”. The tightening of migration policies and the centrality of informal settlements between segregation and resistance

    No full text
Abstract   Alongside the external borders of Italy, but also across its internal territories, we are witnessing an evolving process of production of new social relations and new micro-spatialities that tend to progressively change the territorial features. This new “presence” of asylum seekers across the urban spaces and the new strategies adopted to control it lead us to question the evolutions (and weakness) of that securitarian  rhetorics and policies that have been at the center of the migrations government in Italy, for many years. Security policies that in recent years seem to have found new vigour and a certain hegemony even with respect to the right to asylum and reception. This paper, based on the observations collected during an ethnographic research carried out in Padua, explores the social implications of the frame of segregation, social abandonment and urban dispersion that characterize asylum seekers (and ex asylum seekers) daily surviving and resisting accross the urban areas. Moreover we focus on the ways in which this internal  “borderscapes” has become in certain cases a urban “battleground” that makes less linear the urban governance of the migrants within  the securitarian paradigm. In this sense we have looked at the counter-conduct put in place against the lack of freedom and the violation of the rights especially for those excluded fron the institutionale reception system, so turning our gaze outside the reception facilities dealing with those who, forcibly or voluntarily, are populating the informal settlements that now materialize in Padova and many other Italian cities

What Has Magic to Do with Prayer? Unorthodox Minitexts in vade mecum Prayerbooks for Priests

In recent years, a growing number of studies of smaller, simpler and much tattered liturgical manuscripts that were produced for the use of missionaries, priests of small churches and itinerant preachers, have contributed immensely to our understanding of early medieval liturgy, and of what pastoral care really consisted of in the early medieval West. Many of these vade mecum handbooks for priests also contain some small, unorthodox texts of magical nature. Notwithstanding the fact that throughout Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages such texts and the worldview they represented were repeatedly questioned, denounced and condemned by Christian authorities and policy makers, they were copied into, or attached to, Christian handbooks for priests. This paper looks at a few examples of such texts, and attempts to explain their presence in liturgical codices by referring to the nature of magic and magical practices in the early medieval West.In recent years, a growing number of studies of smaller, simpler and much tattered liturgical manuscripts that were produced for the use of missionaries, priests of small churches and itinerant preachers, have contributed immensely to our understanding of early medieval liturgy, and of what pastoral care really consisted of in the early medieval West. Research is one of the three main missions of Ethiopian public universities i.e., education, research, and community engagement. Many studies in the past have shown that the universities’ research output through research-based innovations and publications is low. But the current state of affairs has not been explored well. It is also rare to find studies that compared completed research projects and published papers in public universities. Studies that assess Ethiopian public universities’ research and publication trends and challenges are also missing. To this end, the current study aims at exploring the challenges of research and publication in Jinka University.  Descriptive survey design was employed, and the necessary data was collected using questionnaire, interview, and focus group discussions. Both quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques were carried out in the study. Descriptive statistics including frequencies and percentages were employed to analyze the quantitative data, while thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. The results interpreted and discussed in relation to the research questions and relevant literature. Finally, based on the results, conclusions were drawn, and recommendations suggested.

The aim of this article is to develop a study around the concept of beauty, starting from reflections on some terms of the Russian language, in particular the term krasnyj with some of its possible declinations, compared with other Slavic languages. These linguistic analyses have the aim of making explicit one of the premises of this study: the anchoring to the immanent condition of the phenomenon of beauty, although investigated on the symbolic level of culture, through that signifying system, as the form of knowledge par excellence, which is language.

Metonymy as a privileged manifestation of linguistic motivation

In the paper, it will be argued that metonymy represents a particularly relevant manifestation of linguistic motivation, both on account of the pervasiveness of metonymy itslef in everyday communication (pointed out, among others, by Lakoff e Johnson: 1980; Littlemore: 2015; Radden: 2005; Wachowski: 2019), and in consideration of the fact that several of the principles that regulate the linking of linguistic-conceptual entities in motivation can also be observed in the operation of metonymy. Among these, the basic condition that involved entities are connected within the same knowledge network, be it the linguistic system itself, or a frame of extralinguistic knowledge entrenched in a linguistic-cultural community. The first brief section sets as a starting point the saussurean notions of arbitrariness, relative arbitrariness and motivation. Section 2, based on recent studies, offers a characterization of the notion of motivation. Section 3 is devoted to a description of metonymy, primarily based on studies in Cognitive Linguistics. Also, in these two sections, the commonalities and areas of overlap between the two phenomena are highlighted, to then be briefly resumed in the conclusions
