The goal of the paper is to reconstruct a framework of experiences on the concept of urban limit and on the theme of the transformation of the city walls into the road, and to include in this framework the experience of Messina, a particular case of transformation of the layout of the walls to two speeds: one physiological, as happened in other situations, and the other accelerated by the destruction following the 1908 earthquake and the consequent reconstruction wor

The chorus of baroque opera on the contemporary stage: formal issues and stage direction’s solutions

When we think about the choral element with reference to Italian opera, our minds are immediately drawn to the grand choral masses of nineteenth-century opera, capable of evoking strong emotional impact in the audience. Yet, within the overall framework of the dramatic action of the Ottocento operas, the significance of choruses is often rather marginal and secondary. In contrast, in the so-called ‘early opera’, the chorus and choral elements assume fundamental importance not only in terms of scenic and musical outcome, but also in the whole dramatic construction. The absence of a direct transmission of representational traditions and customs from early seventeenth-century operas, as well as the instability of the status of the musical texts that preserve them, pose operational challenges for contemporary opera stage direction. This contribution investigates these challenges with particular reference to Orfeo (1607) by Claudio Monteverdi with libretto by Alessandro Striggio, through the analysis of several productions that represent different approaches to the original text and, more broadly, different trends in contemporary opera stage direction

    The Flaneur-as-Researcher. An Autoethnography

    No full text
Reviewing the nineteenth-century figure initially outlined by the poet Baudelaire and later codified by Walter Benjamin, the term "flâneur" is defined as the intellectual capable of getting lost in the city, pushing beyond its threshold to capture its "genius loci". In this article I discussed and reported a complete analysis of my thesis work. Once onceiving the flanerie as a research practice, I then conceive myself as a "being" flâneur and, at the same time, to conceive "its doing", identifying a methodological metaphor of the social researcher. To achieve this goal, I used my own experience, particularly focusing on my period of time in Paris, through the elaboration of autoethnography in an attempt to identify the flâneur's identity. By telling my story, I decided to speak of myself and my experience, seeking to investigate how the flâneur emerges and its related distinctive features. In particular, in addition to expressing how the practice of flânerie is discussed and experienced and what it means, I intend to focus on precisely who practices it, that is, the flâneur itself. Specifically, I asked myself: when and how does a flâneur take place? How does a flâneur or a practice of flânerie influence not only themselves but also others? Furthermore, what added value can I provide to make my experience as a flâneur more accessible? In this perspective, I intended to highlight the transition of flanerie from a macroscopic phenomenon, as a mere practice, to a microscopic phenomenon: a territorial exploration that also refers to the existence of those who practice it. This is an attempt to make this suspension, this waiting, a productive moment, in order to justify, in the eyes of the community but also to myself, my idling, in order to represent new forms of learning based on my own experience. Furthermore, since my empathetic knowledge journey in the territory strongly impacts my identity, I have conceived the condition of flanerie itself as a queer inclination. Autoethnography has allowed me to validate my experience as a flâneur, an issue that is usually not included in traditional social scientific research. Autoethnography, in fact, has made it possible to interpret and illustrate traditional concepts in the social sciences, making them accessible to those not familiar with the field, raising questions that would otherwise never have been asked

L’infanzia della maturità. Poesia e gioco secondo Toti Scialoja

English article title: The childhood of maturity. Poetry and play according to Toti Scialoja Toti Scialoja’s poetic journey stands as a prime example when exploring the consistent use of alliteration as a core framework in poetry and literature. This compositional matrix was adeptly employed to craft whimsical verses addressed to children and later, to fashion poignant and intense lyrical compositions. The analysis of this paper places a particular focus on the semantics entwined with repetitive sound patterns, highlighting the poet’s skill in blending starkly contrasting elements to elicit moments of humor. Drawing from Raskin’s Semantic Script Theory of Humor, this study elucidates the mechanisms that render these verses impactful, utilizing contrasting pairs that range from mutually exclusive – or complementary – to gradual, such as the play on antonyms. Moreover, within Scialoja’s repertoire lie dramatic works where phonetic orchestrations act as a cohesive agent, binding together harmonious meanings amidst their narrative essence.L’itinerario poetico di Toti Scialoja è emblematico quando si osservano gli usi sistematici, in poesia o in letteratura, dell’allitterazione.

Experiments with Intermediality in the Early Poetry of Mihály Babits

Mihály Babits (1883-1941) was one of the most influential figures of modern twentieth-century Hungarian poetry. In an earlier article (Kelevéz 2023), I examined Babits’ efforts, as a poet still in the early years of his career, to engage in open or hidden dialogues with masterpieces by the great figures of European and Hungarian art. Babits created these dialogues not simply by using the common tools of intertextuality. In other words, he did not merely interweave literary allusions and references into the tapestries of his poems. He also used various forms of ekphrasis and other kinds of intermedial references. Babits experimented with ways of interlinking the visual arts and the world of words, and these innovative interlinkings gave him new and complex means of expression. In the discussion below, I analyze several examples of these experiments and show how the threads of intertextual and intermedial references are interwoven into unified works of art in Babits’ poems.

Strategies and instruments for active mobility: the main Italian policies

Starting from the relationship between urban planning and mobility management, TeMA has gradually expanded the view of the covered topics, always remaining in the groove of rigorous scientific in-depth analysis. This section of the Journal, Review Notes, is the expression of continuously updating emerging topics concerning relationships between urban planning, mobility and environment, through a collection of short scientific papers written by young researchers. The Review Notes are made of four parts. Each section examines a specific aspect of the broader information storage within the main interests of TeMA Journal. In particular, the Urban strategies, programmers and tools section presents the different strategies and tools for active mobility implemented internationally. This work aims to highlight the various actions undertaken at national and local level to promote the spread of active mobility in Italy, providing a general overview of the tools and strategies adopted and also presenting concrete examples of solutions implemented in some cities. The numerous positive experiences at local level allow us to highlight the attention of Italian cities to reduce dependence on the car (and motorcycle) mode in daily travel, in favor of lower-impact modes of transport This trend of promoting active travel (on foot and by bicycle), which is more ecological and healthy, could contribute to achieving the goal of improving the quality of urban environments and the quality of life of people

Le istituzioni informali come assemblaggi socio-materiali nell’ecosistema regionale. Discorso per una diagnostica neomaterialista postumanista

    No full text
Increasing attention to the role of informal institutions in urban and regional contexts is defining much of the debate in spatial economics and policy. In this regard, a large part of regional development doctrine, using the concept of “civic networks” as a proxy, has seen them as constitutive of the local economy's adaptive capacity to external shocks. On the other hand, frequent global crises push for critical “diagnostics” that can be inspired by the new ontologies introduced by the ideas of posthumanist neo-materialism. In this key, informal institutions could be seen as socio-material assemblages immersed in the eco-system of reference. The article aims to open a line of critical debate in regional economics and politics in questioning some crucial assumptions of the neo-institutionalist framework with the interesting suggestions emerging from the major works of D. Haraway and K. Barad’s neo-materialist and post-humanist approach. At the centre of the discussion is the concept of informal institutions and the most recent proposals regarding their positioning in local economies. On the other hand, and in the absence of an alleged synchronisation and/or integration of the two models, the proposal, as a kind of “discussion-by-difference” allows us for a local context up-to-dating diagnostic analytics.

City-Port Areas (CPA), traditionally considered synergic centres for trade, commerce, living and tourism, are nowadays under pressure due to urbanisation activities, overtourism, climate change, and other intertwined conditions of risk (natural and anthropogenic). It is possible to identify fragmented and shrinking territories in CPA - wastescapes - that foreshadow opportunities for sustainable, circular and socially inclusive urban regeneration. Regenerating wastescapes in the CPA calls for a collaborative approach that can give voice to all stakeholders, through different methods. Two of them have been explored in two didactic activities analysed in this paper. The transition towards a sustainable and just environment requires interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches involving different skills, while ensuring the development of innovations that can be formulated in Urban Living Lab settings (ULL). In the first place, this paper analyses the use of images and visions as a co-design tool that can facilitate the understanding of urban phenomena, while ensuring public participation in the processes of co-designing possible future scenarios. Secondly, it unpacks the gamification process that, even if not innovative per se and not free of limitation, when experimented in the didactic experiences, seems to be a stimulating method to engage the discussion among students, enhance their preparedness and awareness to cope with societal and sociotechnical transitions, while opening up to the local communities. Combining theories of sustainable urban regeneration with innovative teaching practices such as co-creation methods and serious gaming, research by design through students’ experimentations, aims to explore new perspectives to address the challenges of sustainable change in CPA and to raise students' awareness of complex issues such as the circular economy, resource management and urban resilience.
