Children at the border. Narrative reconstruction of Kindertransport journeys

    No full text
In this article I analyse three narrative interviews that belong to the corpus Flucht und Emigration nach Großbritannien (“Flight and Emigration to Great Britain”), a collection of interviews gathered in 2017 with former Kindertransportees, i.e. Jewish children between 4 and 16 years old accepted as migrants in Great Britain (cf. Thüne 2019). In these interviews, the speakers were invited to give their individual accounts of their journeys from Nazi-Germany or Austria to Great Britain, with a special focus on how they perceived the crossing of the border. The aim of the article is to analyse examples from these interviews in a close reading that – where possible – makes use of Bakhtin’s concept of chronotope. I focus on three aspects: 1) how they perceived the border crossing and what they remember of the journey in 1939 in general; 2) what type of text they produced (more a narration or closer to a report in style); 3) what these examples allow us to conclude about the relation between individual records on the one hand and collective and cultural memory on the other

    No full text
The narrative interviews of the so-called Israelkorpus represent family narratives in which various stories of migration and flight come together. Since many speakers have family origins in Central European regions where other languages besides German were spoken (first and foremost Yiddish), the linguistic biographies of their families are extremely varied. This is especially true for interviewees who came from peripheral regions on the edge of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In my contribution I provide some quantitative data on the sub-corpus of my research, which includes all interviews conducted with first-generation speakers born in Austria or in other territories of the Habsburg Empire. Next I analyze some examples that show which chronotopes can be associated with the places the interviewees mention in reference to the migration experiences of some of their family members. Finally, these chronotopes are related to their family language biography.

I’m ... I’m a survivor”. Verbalised memories of camps in the Israelkorpus

    No full text
Un’analisi mirata rivela non solo il profondo coinvolgimento emotivo del narratore, ma anche le strategie usate per gestire le emozioni durante l’esposizioneThis paper examines how one of the interviewees of the Israelkorpus, Abraham Goldberg, describes the different camps he had to experience directly or indirectly. It emerges that these places are very precisely located, both geographically and chronologically, and that they function as concrete points of reference for memories and emotions which are often revived through the narrative. This narrative, too, expresses how difficult it is for the victims of National Socialist persecution to verbalize their traumatic experiences. A precise technical analysis reveals the emotions and the strategies to handle these emotions during the narration

La Laus Ursae (inc. «Quos capis nigris»): une ode attribuée à tort à Giovanni Pontano

    No full text
The so-called Laus Ursae (inc. «Quos capis nigris»), a sapphic ode, was first edited and attributed to Pontano by Benedetto Soldati (Pontano’s first scientific editor). On the evidence of one manuscript in the Biblioteca Marciana (Lat. XII 169 = 4562), in which the poem is found within an earlier version of Pontano’s collection Parthenopeus, Soldati published it in a separate section he called Appendice (as “App. 10” in hiw own numbering). Following an old intuition by Carlo Dionisotti, but through a new examination of the extant manuscript tradition, this paper argues that the presence of this ode in such a Pontanian context, which happens in only one sub-branch of the tradition, is likely due to an interpolation. The close reading of the poem provides further literary, stylistic and metrical evidence against the Pontanian authorship of this rather mediocre piece.

    No full text
The study of tourism is one of the privileged gateways for understanding the territory, not only from an economic point of view. Tourism plays an essential role in the social and spatial dialectic that assigns meaning to places: on the one hand, it feeds the individual and collective imaginary through the production of icons and representations; on the other hand, it shapes places, which become "touristy" through visible transformations that spatialize those same images. Since the 1970s, various observers have denounced the tourist phenomenon as a new form of alienation, environmental destruction or imperialism. In the wake of these and other calls for the need to rethink and govern an ever-growing industry, the so-called responsible tourism has emerged as a mode of travel that meets and respects the needs of travelers and host regions while protecting and enhancing the opportunities of specific territories. Starting from a reflection on the dimensions, impacts and changes taking place in one of the phenomena characterizing contemporary times, this article, as well as the special issue it introduces, takes as a case study IT.A.CÀ_migrants and travelers, the first festival at the European level focused explicitly on the theme of responsible tourism. The journey through the different editions of IT.A.CÀ_migrants and travelers allows us to assess assumptions, outcomes and future potential of experiences and practices that in recent years, through participatory processes of sharing, co-designing, dialogue and experimentation, have sought to combine the sustainability of tourism with the well-being of citizens, imagining a valorization of the territory that promotes the transition to a sustainable cohabitation of the Earth.

Environmental and geomorphic aspects of urban beaches of Naples, southern Italy

Integrated morphometric, granulometric, and morphoscopic analyses and environmental surveys of six beaches selected from thirty, with different characteristics and lengths ranging from a few to several tens of meters, were carried out since2019. These sensitive transition environments between sea and land undergo bureaucratic and operational management in mutual transition between many institutions, from central to local, which often results in delayed interventions. Thecomparison and interpretation of the data and results allowed to outline the main morphosedimentary and geomorphological characters of these beaches, to obtain a modern morphotypological classification including biotic and anthropogenic elements. These urban beaches can be equated in physiography and sedimentological features to pocket beaches or intermediate types between those and predominantly sandy tombolo, salient and beaches at the cliff foot. Since pocket beaches are the favorite of bathers for their beauty due to highmorphological waterscape variability, they are subject to intense anthropogenic pressure. Current erosion in these artificial environments is less intense than occurring on large natural littorals of alluvial or minor coastal plains but is relevant concerning the limited width and massive seasonal tourist pressure. Urban beaches register a high-risk factor when tourist settlements occupy the backshore. They constitute a natural buffer against undermining the behind cliff foot by storm waves. Consequently, the cliff is sheltered and becomes inactive. Sea waves could trigger cliff collapses or seriously damage urban structures on them. Considering the importance that urban beaches have both for a tourist-recreational issue and the safeguard of the cliff and buildings, it is necessary to protect them. Appropriate policies include proper management and targeted removal of the clay material, macroplastics, microplastics, and microfibers massed by waves, sea currents, and wind, as well as from incorrect behavior by users

Environmental factors affecting living comfort perception in different localities in Sri Lanka

    No full text
The living in comfort and the consequent healthier life is a reaction to the environment indicated by the absence of environmental stressors. The present study investigated the factors influencing the living comfort perception in an urban and a non-urban locality in Sri Lanka.  A survey using a pre-tested questionnaire was carried out to solicit the people’s perceptions on identified environmental factors randomly selecting fifty households from each locality. The results showed the factors i.e., stray animals, dust and garbage negatively affected living comfort in both urban and non-urban localities while temperature, insects, flood, noise, smoke, vibration, and bad odor negatively affected living comfort in the urban locality. Further, the factors i.e., rainfall, wind, humidity and drinking water were not important for living comfort perception in both localities. The factors i.e., water bodies, space, natural beauty, and biodiversity affected the living comfort positively in the urban locality. The factors identified in this study are useful in zoning the localities according to their suitability in relation to public comfort perception. Further, the identified factors can be manipulated to improve the living comfort perception in urban and non-urban localities

Farmers decision on land use land cover change from agriculture to forest and factors affecting their decision: the case of Gurage Zone, Central Ethiopia

    No full text
Land use and land cover change determined by numerous situation specific factors at different locations and times. In Ethiopia inappropriate land uses land cover changes become pressing challenges. Similarly, in the Gurage zone, there is a significant change from agriculture to Eucalyptus plantations. Therefore, this study investigates the direct and indirect drivers of the change, as well as factors affecting farmers' decisions regarding the conversion to provide important policy input. The data collected from 311 households through household surveys, key informant interviews (KIIs), and focused group discussions (FGDs). Descriptive statistics and a binary logit model used for analysis. The result indicated that the direct driver for this land conversion included the ability to generate high income from forest, soil infertility, and increasing demand for forest products. On the other hand, the allelopathic effect of neighboring plantations, lack of adequate agricultural technology and increased accessibility to forest products market were the top indirect drivers. The binary logit results show that farmers' decision to convert agricultural lands to forestland is significantly influenced by land size, forest income, education level, and years lived in the area. The findings suggest creating awareness about appropriate land use techniques to sustain the development
