Generate communities: the voice of the inhabitants of the Fuorigrotta neighbourhood in Naples
To counter the dangerous trend of neglect and abandonment of places, synonymous with territorial decay and fragmentation, landscape policies must aim to enhance the active role of local communities in the management and decision-making processes concerning those territories, with particular attention to younger generations. The analysis of perception, and consequently the image of urban spaces as an aggregate of all stimuli, is a fundamental step in understanding the relationship between the built environment and the people who inhabit or use it. This allows for a deeper exploration of community needs, moving beyond a purely analytical assessment to consider temporal, spatial, and behavioural dimensions. A perceptual analysis enabled a comprehensive understanding of the issues affecting the Fuorigrotta neighbourhood in Naples, identifying potentially transformable spaces and formulating intervention strategies and guidelines to be applied in an initial phase of spatial transformation. The described approach, capable of generating public spaces of aggregation and sociality where communities can feel fully involved and completely represented, fosters respect for places and promotes their ongoing care and maintenanc
Emotions through Photos in Qualitative Interviews with Multi-locals as a methodological Challenge
Qualitative interviews are widely used research methods. However, their potential is often underestimated and not exploited. Thus, there is the possibility to complement the interviews with "new" methods - for example, the hybrid method of reflexive photography. This method from cross-cultural studies combines interview and photography techniques. In this method, the interviewees and the scientific observers reverse their roles. Therefore, the interviewees become experts for their photos, report their intentions, and subjectively select motifs. Photos offer the possibility to quickly and technically easily capture visible information. The paper discusses the method of reflexive photography and the evaluation of the empirical materials using image interpretation. This paper deals with the emotions of multi-locals - i.e. people who live in several places at the same time – in qualitative interviews talking about photos. Due to social and societal change, multi-local lifestyles are already a reality for many people. The district of Diepholz in Lower Saxony serves as the study area. This paper aims to determine the pros and cons of reflexive photography for emotions in qualitative interviews. For this purpose, the four basic emotions, Fear, Anger, Happiness and Sadness, are examined in more detail with the help of the Circumplex Model. The question arises to what extent photos in interviews can evoke emotions in qualitative interviews? The results show that reflexive photography and image interpretation methods offer numerous opportunities and challenges. On the one hand, a narrative impulse for the interviews is made possible. Moreover, with the help of these methods, visible information and textual-linguistic representations of the interviewees can be collected. Through the photos, the interviewees think more deeply and reflectively. The photos triggered emotional moments in the interviews. For example, there were sad narratives about family losses and emotional highlights about friends and (grand-)children. On the other hand, there is a challenge for researchers to leave the actual interpretation of the images to the interviewees and to misinterpret images. The paper explores the emotional moments of both multi-locals and the researcher.Qualitative interviews are widely used research methods. “I’d rather Live in Munich, but my Job in Stuttgart is More Attractive”. Multi-Local Living between Corporate and Spatial Ties
Previous research has shown that employees with strong corporate ties are less likely to quit. This literature implicitly focuses on people living and working in the same place. But an increasing number of employees live in more than one place, a phenomenon referred to as multi-local living. The aim of this paper is to analyse the corporate ties of multi-local employees working in Stuttgart (Germany) and how such ties influence multi-local living arrangements. The research questions are: 1) Which factors prompted multi-local employees to decide for Stuttgart and their employer? 2) How are strong corporate ties of multi-local employees shaped? 3) And which dilemmas arise from strong corporate and spatial ties to different places and how are they resolved? The study shows that the reasons prompting people to work for an employer in Stuttgart were mostly linked to Stuttgart’s regional specialisation in the tech sector, and that people initially living multi-locally focus on their career capital and future employability. However, while some feel forced to take up their current job and to live multi-locally, for example after only receiving one job offer, others voluntarily decide to take up a job far away from their other place of residence to gain new personal and work-related experience. But it becomes clear that there is a fine line between forced and voluntary multi-local living. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the corporate ties of multi-local employees and their intentions as to whether to remain in Stuttgart with their employer. Employees with low to average corporate ties tend to stay with their employers due to a lack of other job opportunities and would quit if better job opportunities arose. In contrast to the literature on mono-local employees, multi-local employees are more likely to quit, even after having developed strong corporate ties, due to strong spatial ties elsewhere. Decisions on continuing multi-local living arrangements and staying with an employer are complex, depending on the corporate and spatial ties of all household members as well as on future education and job prospects in the respective places. Thus, even strong corporate ties will not prevent employees from quitting if reasons to relocate to the other place of residence dominate. If partners are unable to decide on a common place of residence, some multi-local employees just accept the dilemma and postpone the decision.Previous research has shown that employees with strong corporate ties are less likely to quit.
Il polline e la ruggine is a low-budget documentary, made between 2015 and 2016 and available online on the Fondazione Isec YouTube channel. It deals with industrial closures in Sesto San Giovanni and their consequences from the 1990s onwards, focusing on the former Falck steel plants. The project, initiated in 2013 with Fondazione Isec and supported by regional funding in 2014, was led by Sara Zanisi and Sara Roncaglia. It explored deindustrialization not only as a loss of industrial production but also as a phenomenon with social, political, and cultural implications.
The documentary uses oral sources collected through interviews to build an archive documenting the local impact of global deindustrialization. Sesto San Giovanni, once a major industrial hub, is now characterized by disused industrial heritage and the need for redevelopment, with particular focus on the Falck areas, the largest ex-industrial site in Europe undergoing redevelopment.
The project focused on the memory of industrial work, urban transformations, and the narratives of the people involved. It aims to highlight the complexity and long-term implications of deindustrialization, not only in economic terms but also in the cultural and social identity of the city.
The article examines how past and recent historiography has dealt with the diplomatic relations between the Crown of Aragon and the Mamluk sultanate. After having reassessed some paradigms that have long influenced the literature on the topic, the author presents some studies carried out in recent years as an effective example of “New Diplomatic History” applied to the analysis of the exchanges between the Crown and the Mamluks.
In the second half of the 20th century, the northern boundary of Lisbon underwent a transformation from rural to urban as a result of migratory movements from the inte- rior of the country to the coast with increasing pressure on the housing stock. It is in this context that extensive areas of informal settlements emerged, both in the city and in Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA). In response to both the housing shortage and the growth of informal settlements, solutions were provided through the construction of public housing neighbourhoods and also the development of private residential proj- ects. This study aims to (i) characterize the processes of growth and development of the outskirts of Lisbon, focusing on two housing developments – one, built without legal authorisation (Brandoa) and the other built through a regular process of urbanization and construction (Alfornelos) and (ii) to understand how this complex urban develop- ment process can be observed through the public realm, assessing its role in promoting urbanity. The study uses the analysis of historical cartography through its interpretative redesign, iconographic research, as well as a theoretical approach and definition of a le- gal and regulatory framework. Questo lavoro fa parte del progetto di ricerca ‘MetroPublicNet - Building the foundations of a Metropolitan Public Space Network as a support for a robust, decarbonized, and cohesive city: Projects, lessons, and perspectives in Lisbon’ (FCT funding: PTDC/ ART-DAQ/0919/2020)
Husserl, Cohen e Cassirer
In this essay, I will discuss the concept of historical teleology in Husserl, Cohen and Cassirer. I will distinguish between a “strong” and a “weak” teleology to define two paths that seem to enliven transcendental philosophy. On the one hand, the strong option is underpinned by more general hypotheses on the relationship concerning “consciousness” and “reality”, “thought” and “being”, as well as it gives rise to an “archaeo-teleology”; on the other hand, the weak option tones down the substantial unity of this framework and enables a comparative approach. Therefore, I will show that the most important difference between strong and weak teleology revolves around the emphasis respectively put on the terminus a quo and the terminus ad quem, but I will also draw attention to the intertwining of these two strategies.

The contemporary urban museum: analysis, tools and methodologies for a review of strategy monitoring process and the development of guidelines
The article proposes the results of a doctoral research about the role of the museum in urban contexts as a hub for activating participation processes with residents through dedicated activities and the reconfiguration of traditional visiting spaces, opening up to dialogue with the city. Considering the museum as an innovative place of social aggregation and attraction of users, the museum takes on an increasingly inclusive meaning, becoming emblematic of the relationship with its territory. The research methodologically identifies new qualiquantitative criteria for evaluating the impact that museum generates in improving welfare policies, increasing its social role. Through three case studies, selected from typologies where the museum has been an active subject in the urban transformation process, the relationship that has been established with the institutions, citizens and professionals is highlighted to find those elements on which the different processes were structured. The aim is to find analogies and differences and build a model, which supports in configuring a preliminary proposal of guidelines, measuring management performances on the multi-scale interaction between museum and city in urban regeneration processes.

Gods’ Gates. Un approccio metodologico ai cammini del Sud
Gods’ Gates. A methodological approach to the paths of Southern Italy
The theme of the Italian ‘paths’ relaunched by the pandemic has highlighted the need for a reconnaissance and enhancement of the itineraries of the South. The research extends the brand of the ‘Path of the Gods’ on the Amalfi coast, already a Unesco Cultural Heritage, to the multitude of little-known ‘Paths of the Gods that furrow the entire Sorrento peninsula, from Vietri to Punta della Campanella. The evocative force of the case study clarifies methodologies that can be exported to similar geographic contexts, based on the identification of the ‘Gods’ gates’, or those urban, rural, often marginal places to be discovered, united by constituting interchange ‘nodes’ between vehicular traffic and trail. Architectural experiments supported by a wayfinding approach highlight the potential structure and systemic perception between some of these territorial ‘hubs’. The ‘Gods’ gates’ can prefigure a new system of widespread centrality of this Mediterranean landscape: an extraordinary potential for the incentive of slow, alternative and sustainable tourism, but also unifying places, symbolically representative of the inseparable relationships between urban and rural, between ancient and contemporary worlds of communities.

Isthmic paths: itineraries between Poleis in the Greece of Italy
The research actively engages with the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), while also proposing to expand its opportunities through complementary and sustainable actions, reflecting on the genius loci of the Poleis in Southern Magna Graecia. Through an experimental approach to architectural and urban composition, explicitly multiscalar and transdisciplinary, the Greek city and its components are taken as archetypal models for the reconstruction and reinterpretation of contemporary southern realities. Starting from the hypothesis of the geographical and semantic dimension of the polis, the study defines as its area of focus the southern Italian region (Campania, Calabria, Basilicata), corresponding to the territories of Magna Graecia and intersected by the isthmic routes, with the goal of outlining a methodological approach to the reconstruction of southern metropolitan areas. The research thus explores the relationships between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, identifying historical routes linking the two seas that played a key role in the settlement processes of Southern Italy.
